Will Red Dead Redemption 2 come to the PS4 on 2 Blu-ray discs? [Rumor]

Red Dead Redemption is rumored to be the first multi-disc game on the PS4, and most likely Xbox One too.

The big installation file had to do with loading times though, not the actual game file size...as for this rumor R* must have used all 50 GBs on the disc but a two disc release seems far fetched...we'll see soon enough.

Wait, aren't there triple and quadruple layer bluray discs? I thought these drives (base models and up) were compatible with upwards of 100gb discs (quad layer) so the game can just ship on one of those.

No, most of the size comes down to assets of the map and characters, the mp in itself wont weigh much. Also the mp only releases in november so it wouldnt be on disc

That would be a real statement of how massive the game is. Although tbh, they could still ship what they can on one disc and you download the rest upon installation. We all know there will still be a day one download/patch anyway.

I think it's assets, textures and all that though. Just Cause 3 is still probably several times "bigger" map-wise than RDR 2 but nothing in comparison in detail etc

Not sure how this is possible, currently playing Assassins Creed Origins and that map is MASSIVE, I seriously doubt RDR2 will be on that scale or larger especially with how dense the multiple cities are in ACO and the 100s of npcs. In my opinion ACO is too big its hard to do everything.

Red dead 2 is more detailed and the NPCs are outstanding..
I read one article it says Arthur did point a gun at a NPC and quickly the NPC too took out his weapon and aimed at Arthur. Then you as a player get options where you can shoot, Defuse and so on the situation. The player chose Defuse. Then Arthur said he was joking. But the NPC had his gun out and as he walked by he kept looking back to see if Arthur made any wrong move... That's one of such detailing R* has done in this game...
Then if you kill someone their families will hunt you down lol!

@michaelknight.... not necessarily, if the game doesn't fit on 1 disc then they obviously have to use multiple discs regardless of how much free space you have in your console. once it is installed then yes, you may not have a need to switch discs... (unless you will only plan to play online all the time), but whether it comes in multi discs is still a possibility because there are people in the world without internet that won't be able to buy the game digitally.

I can't see it being 2 disks, it just isn't practicle especially in an open world which they want to everyone seemless.

You can get 100gb on a blu ray, so for me personally, I can false on this rumour.

You wouldn't be switching discs. You would install some of the data on the hard drive, then play like any other game.

Quad layer discs can hold roughly 100gb. The download size for the digital version of Red Dead 2 is 105gb.

I'd say 2 discs is a possibility.

Technically they could 'go gold' and produce physical media which just contains licence keys, and prompt a download of the game files at launch. I don't see why they would bundle 2 discs if the day 1 patch is so big anyway. It's kind of a Rockstar tradition for me now; pick up the game at midnight then drink beer for two hours waiting for everything to install

Some people don't have internet service that is good enough to handle something like that. When I lived in the country our internet service was terrible. Barely better than dial up. It would have taken forever to download something that big. Not only that but connection interruptions often lead to problems with the download. I'm so glad I don't have to deal with that shit anymore.

Few ways this could go:

1. if the base game really is 100gigs then 2 blurays are needed. Rockstar ships the game on 2 discs.

2. 1 disc and a massive patch. Sucks for data cap folks or bad internet connection guys. Specially since it’s only for the base game. I think this is what rockstar will actually do. Internet connection is largely the norm for most people now.

3. It could use the newer bigger Blurays that are larger. I think it was stated that a new firmware update may be needed for base Xbox and PS4 consoles, though I’m not sure if that is correct and doubt it. But if it is the firmware could be included in the game.

4. 2 disc PlayStation and 1 disc Xbox due to supporting the larger discs. Base Xbox needs a patch.

Even with 500+ mb/s connections, it's not fully utilized when downloading and highly unreliable in terms of consistent speeds, which is one of the many reasons the majority prefer physical despite internet being "the norm".
