No one is going to cry about exclusives, if they do then they are idiots, just saying. Real gamers, ones whom are not blinded by loyalty can and do enjoy multiple platforms. I own all 3 major systems and enjoy the full spectrum of games, people should try this. Xbox is my main multiplayer system, playstation offers me my badass single play and Japanese market games while my switch let's me tap into Nintendos market.

Sony gave in to the MS and Allies introduced marketing (smear) campaign. It is unfortunate that they let the competition blackmail them into changing their business policies in fear of negative pr. Plain and simple.
And i'm sure that many who rooted against crossplay with x1 just were against the fact that ms, who is the most useless and lazy company of the three and most definately try to force sony, who did an awesome job this whole generation, to change their stance on crossplay under the guise of being pro consumer.

I didn't disagree with you about console cross-play, but universal cross-play isn't a good thing if it includes PC players. I play PC sometimes, as well as my PS4 and if you guys wanna get wrecked by mouse and keyboard players in a competitive shooting game be my guest, but I think a lot of console gamers are fine with the way things are. You ever seen how fast PC players can equip attachments and manage inventory in PUBG and Blackout and that doesn't even take into account the clear aiming advantage that mouse and keyboard provide.

Quick reminder that Rocket league crossplay isn't activated by default, and my guess is nor will any game whatsoever, so if YOU don't enable it, you're just not affected by this change at all.

that's what so nice about this, people complaining about crossplay won't see the difference and us that wants to play with more friends can if we want to.

the problem is if you are on a ps4 pro and playing against a base xbox there is a huger advantage o the pro player due to draw distance,framerate,resolution etc.
the pro and x would be ok but gamers on the X would also have a huge advantage over a ps4 slim due to resolution,draw,clarity,framer ate .

You're wrong. Rocket League IS crossplay by default and it sucks.

The option to turn it off is buried in a menu so the vast majority of players are in the standard crossplay matches with PC.

The only way I would tolerate crossplay is if it is reserved for private matches only.

Otherwise, IMO it will completely screw up competitive online MP.

Crossplay may be "consumer friendly", but it sure isn't "gamer friendly" (that is, if you're a gamer who cares about an even playing field for online MP)

Im still curious if this will allow you to connect directly with others on another network. It may just be random matchmaking at first. PSN and XBL both handle connecting players, and it takes a completely separate account on another network to match individuals....like you see in MMO's, with their own username database.

While the PS4 is the most popular home console. This game is also on mobile and A LOT of kids play it on their phone. There's more smartphones out there than PS4's. Sony cant' use the leverage of "We have the highest playerbase" because that is not relevant when mobile in involved. Thus, the PS4 being a money making machine isn't a priority for Epic when they're making more off mobile. Sony was at the disadvantage for once, and they made the right call. This will only help convince casuals that don't own a home console yet, to grab a PS4 for Fortnite rather than another platform.

Either way, I never felt that the loss in terms of revenue would be a huge hinderance to cross play. But up to this point, and even now, a lot of people were confusing cross play, and cross progression. But this new beta seems to address both issues.

I knew Sony would have to make policies to get this to be enabled. Said so back when the Rocket League dev first started all this debate.....which some people vehemently denied was true. This beta seems like they've been looking at this for a while, since they just didn't throw it out overnight or in a month. The beta will probably be used to refine the policies until they can make it more ubiquitous, and included in their compliance settings and API's for any developer to use.

I don't think it would ever hurt Sony, or any company to enable it. I think having cross play enabled does help competitors though, which I can see not being something that most companies care to do. But if its available across the board, then the effects are mitigated.

How's this for a crazy theory - what little risk exists for Sony's bottom line on this is the group of people that will now buy an X1X due to more power and not having to sacrifice their friend base due to cross play. But it'll be a year or so (probably more) before you really see cross play make it's way to most mainstream 3rd party titles. If I join my cousin playing on PS4 and he selects duos, it will matchmake with other PS4 players while a PC player is in the party. I actually agree with you on this. Let the console wars if you will handle themselves out in game. The next Multiplat game being Faction Wars. Whether it is a Battle Royal game, online shooter or MMO this where the competition needs to be had both competitively and cooperatively. See the stats broken down by faction (platform you game on) then make your jabs at each other. You don't have to be hateful or degrading of the feature of Crossplay just be a good a true gamer about it.

A beta implies that they're testing the waters. They would have made policies to handle cross play and cross progression.

Just look at every developer who's said Sony denied them. SOny did this because they don't have policies to allow it to meet compliance standards. They have this for PC cross play, and have for a while. It takes time to make policies though, and anything involving money on PSN tends to be scrutinized heavily by Sony.

Even MS didn't just turn it on. They have their own policies to handle such things.

This one game is probably a test bed, likely facilitated by Epic, to get the different platform makers on the same page and working out what each requires to enable it....something which was rumored in the dev community a while back and falling apart early in the discussions, which eventually led to this huge backlash against Sony in the public eye because MS couldn't shut up about it, and Sony didn't talk much about it, and when they did, they said stupid stuff about why they weren't enabling it.

But this now was probably a couple months at least in the making.

They didn't put up a huge fight. They made two statements in a year and half. Both fairly stupid comments, but the one a few weeks ago was misrepresented heavily in the article about it.

And a beta such as this isn't just some sort of flipping of a switch. It was planned, with policies attached, and the beta is a test to see if they need to change or adjust anything, or if they'll even keep doing it for the long run.

It could still happen, just not at launch. As of right now the only game that Sony is allowing full cross-play in is Fortnite. Maybe Fallout 76 will support it somewhere down the line, maybe it won't. Oh well. All we know is that it won't support it at launch.

The reality is Pete Hines confirmed that it wasn't JUST Sony's stance on Cross Play that made them pass on it for now.

Also reality: Todd Howard explicitly blamed Sony entirely, citing them as THE reason it wasn't going forward. It was utter nonsense, as nothing stopped them doing it for the Xbox, or even with the PS4 and PC, but he still made the claim. And now his boss is saying "no, it's not just that".

The truth is cross play was off the table regardless. Bethesda and Howard just let Sony take the heat for their own internal decision to not pursue or plan it.

Given the things I've heard in the dev community, I thought it'd be later rather than sooner. A surprise beta launch is certainly not what I was expecting. But it is a beta to likely try and refine the policies and get data on how it actually affects the console and its players, and likely see which network/social features work, or need refinement.

Flipping the switch to make it work is easy enough. It's just connecting similar packets of netcode. But to really make it good, you need to have all the infrastructure in place to make it as seamless as possible for the end user because the vast majority of a user base are not that tuned in to what's happening behind the scenes.

So you just missed the whole debacle of EA's MT's with Battlefront II and the many articles that went along with it discussing MT's or the articles about loot boxes being considered gambling and how states were trying to pass laws to get those banned? Also I find it funny you would consider MT's and issue and not this, both are bad for gamers when abused or not provided.

Because that was a huge deal not too long ago, which is why Battlefront and other games dropped them or scaled them back and another reason why devs explicitly now state that loot boxes wont be pay to win or have pay to win items.

All you need to know is that multi-console gamers will be happy to have the ability to play Fortnite on any system they own, now that the PS4 won't be locking their Fortnite account away from all other consoles the moment they boot it up on PS4.

Completly different controller and to play agasinst Keyboard and Mouse just doesn't make sense at all.

What's next Call of Duty and Battlefield 5 playing same map like wtf?

I really think this can be easily fixed if it's such a burden to just enable Keyboard and Mouse on these titles. Hell they can make them in house. Microsoft already does plus is working with Razor. It wouldn't take much for Sony to make there own. Plus I know I have a last one keyboard laying around. Bluetooth would obviously be ideal. I Just think this would be a no brainier easy solution. One that can be implemented quickly if demanded.

there has been a lot of cross play between PC/console this gen, so I'm not sure if that argument holds any water.

However it may take a slight hit if that Tidux info is right.

The ability to change your name is coming, but your account will lose all your PS3 and Vita digital games, cloud saves, and trophies.

PS4 will be uneffected.

I don't think cross play is necessary for this gen but it will definitely help for next gen and the fact Kodera and Ken Yoshida actually agreed to this is amazing.

Great news. Hope to see the pressure mount on Bethesda so that 76 eventually gains crossplay support. They championed crossplay, now to see if they'll be among those supporting it into the future.

Well aware Hines already announced that it's not currently on their radar but I hope that changes. I get it that their teams have other priorities right now, making big changes to a game a couple months before it's release is simply impractical, but their biggest hurdle has had a policy shift so it's something they ought to be contemplating very soon.
