There's one crucial thing missing from the PlayStation Classic that the SNES Classic has in spades: lasting appeal.
Shut up Forbes
Don’t tell me how I should feel Forbes...
I would only be disappointed if I could not get one like the NES/SNES classics (at first) but thankfully Amazon has a big preorder so I was able to with this one. Thank you Forbes but your concern is no longer warranted.
"What can men do against such reckless hate against the king of gaming?" - King Theoden https://goo.gl/images/1exf6... Forbes in a hate roll. Wow
Good one SuperSonic91, That too was also one of my most memorable quotes in LoTR2, https://www.youtube.com/wat... "The other was "Run ShadowFox , Show us the meaning of Haste" https://www.youtube.com/wat...
dude. its a dud. and overpriced. you don't even get a power cord. and youre entirely dependent on Sony to decide what handful of games they'll give it before they kill it just like the pstv thing or whatever i don't even remember now. they should have just had the architecture to be backwards compatible or enable an emulator on the ps4 pro. hilarious how much old games don't matter until its a sony product tho.
Please stop comparing this to BC 😂 It is a niche product, very similar to the Nintendo NES mini. You guys really will use anything as ammunition against Sony. If it doesn't interest you, just move along.
If people really wanted to play old games they would do so even in phones. These are more like relic items that people will play for probably an hr and put it to rest. No one is suddenly caring because it is sony, more like You and the others are taking this way too serious because it is sony lol. Same logic also applies to Nintendo who started this trend. Even sega is doing minis as well
Kumakai - Old games don't matter when you have new games, they are a nice extra. How good is that? Sony just continue to embarrass the competitions fanboys, hit after hit after hit. Take a deep breath and relax, you can be a PlayStation owner - the price ain't so bad these days. Jump in mate - you'll love it.
This just proves how some members have questionable thinking. This product, like NES and SNES mini, are for nostalgic purpose and for people who want to own this product. It has nothing to do with backwards compatibility.
Don't get a power cord with the snes mini either but hey, let's just bitch at Sony 🤷♂️
wow kumakai is fighting the fight for someone who think this PS1 mini is a bad thing you sure comment a lot on this topic, did it insult your family or something 😂
But... you do get a USB cord for power.
@ninsigma Failure propaganda. Google what's included with snes classic and try harder in the future.
@g3 Hmmm pretty sure I didn't get on with mine. It's powered over USB. Edit: Did a google: https://press-start.com.au/... https://powerup-gaming.com/... Seems only the US gets a power plug. What was that about "failure propaganda"??
Apparently Forbes assumes that people are so stupid that they're actually looking to this system as some sort of BC solution. If they do, then sure, they'd probably be extremely disappointed. Luckily most gamers aren't actually idiots, and recognize what this system is, so their actual disappointment will come from this likely being a nostalgic purchase, which will end up being a dust collector like so many of these types of things are. But its a cool colletible, and if people want it, go for it, but some people in the media really really really really want to find a reason to cast shade on Sony for any and everything, and its becoming more and more idiotic every single day. I thought Spider-Man hate was stupid enough, but this whole, "This mini console is BC" thing is even stupider.
Man the bhurtness and envy of some is so damn real just because the announce of the Playstation mini, the amount of articles hating the announcement are ridiculous and sad, oh well the only thing I can say Playstation done it again , its mini PS console will be way superior in everything in comparison to the mini NES and mini SNES.
Incorrect. 2d sprites as an artform have aged much more gracefully than the primitive 3d visuals of ps1/n64/saturn. That isn't to say I don't love some ps1 games, mere fact. We'll have to see the rest of the collection on offer before we determine whether sony failed to get a couple liscenses or drop the ball completely but ff7, sotn and mgs would be enough for me.. though mgs looks a little less likely for reasons.
I wonder who paid for the negative press.
I think the hate towards Sony in general is just becoming increasingly ridiculous and stupid. Its gone well beyond the realm of potentially justifiable criticism to completely stupid logic to try and make them look bad....or worse, try and drive a few hits to the website. I can understand it from fan boys on forums, but the media as of late has been kicking it into overdrive to try and make everything much worse than it really is, or just make up complete BS to try and do the same thing to piggyback on something that may be popular at the moment. I'm sure everyone here knows about the story of the boy who cried wolf, so I wonder if people realize that the more this goes on, the less and less respect these sites will get from their readers because it just seems all so contrived. Think of it this way. When I criticize MS, I know a lot of MS fans may not take me seriously because how I'm often critical of them. We as Sony fans don't take a lot of the Xbox fans seriously for the same reason. The same thing will, or kind of already has, happen in the media itself. Case in point, not many takes Kotaku, Polygon, Gamingbolt, or Forbes seriously anymore.
Lasting appeal? mini consoles for retro games? Lmao
It will disappoint cause PS1 has so many classics that you cant just pick 20 games, hell you could fill 10 spots with Square Soft games alone.
Because NES Classic and SNES classic have already? I aint getting fooled 3 times
I like them , but I only play them with my young children
Yep, none of them really have lasting appeal. They're just fun gimmicks, but at $100 not priced accordingly!
Wow lots of "hate" articles triggered by this announcement!
Are you really that surprised or just new to N4G?
Haha yeah sure, act like the vast majority here hate on playstation. Either you're the newbie or you haven't been paying attention.
@G3ng I wouldn't say the vast majority hate on PS here, but there sure as hell are a disproportionate number of PS hate articles considering just how little reason there is to hate on the things that have been hated on as of late. GOW, Spider-Man, and now a PS Mini console receiving tons of hate? Three things which really don't justify countless articles being written about what it's doing wrong, or how it paints Sony as the devil incarnate. I know MS gets its share, but the last few weeks of Spider-Man is this or that were beyond laughable after the first week, and I've seen this PS Mini thing being used as a way to criticize BC, because I assume that the media and fan boys found a way to actually use it as such, despite it not actually being a real factor to anyone buying a console....as evidenced by the sales of the Switch and PS4 compared to the X1. Anyhow, MS share in hate articles is not 20-30 articles all harping on the same thing. It's usually one article, a couple opinion piece, and then the fan boys on both sides making it a big thing until they all find a Sony article that gets them riled up over some thing everyone is supposed to be upset about....cross play being the most common go to when there is no news happening.
So many insecure artical on Sony’s PS classic ... lamo
It won't disappoint me if I buy it or not. The end.
Just like every hardware venture Sony goes one that doesn't have to do with their home console? Lmao
Oh dear. The wait for the yearly Forza must be excruciating for you.
Get triggered and jump straight to xbox, typical.
I fail to see what makes the PS1 Classic lack lasting appeal vs. the exact same thing but for a different retro console. Fans of the PS1 are sure to find the same enjoyment with it as fans of the NES and SNES have found enjoyment in those classic consoles.
They should add the ability to download PSONE classics from the PSN store onto this PSmini. That would be perfect.
That would be awesome
Yep, that would be great
That would make it more expensive. The reason these mini consoles have popped up is that they can make them dirt cheap and sell them with a good profit margin. They know that plenty of people will buy them as Christmas gifts, but there really isn't a lasting market for them.
I think if someone really wants that, just getting a PSTV would suffice. It's more versatile, and can support dual shock controllers, and would be half the price, with games. Wouldn't look as cool, but you'd also get access to most of the Vita games, which IMO makes up for the aesthetics. Honestly, I think Sony should have made the PS Mini a special version of the PSVita, and maybe driven some Vita software sales in the process. Considering they could sell the thing so cheap, it would actually probably be a step up from the PS Mini as it is, but a great deal if it included the 20 games. Lost opportunity on Sony's part IMO. Even if they don't care about the Vita anymore, there is still money to be made on the software itself. Not to mention it could even drive some adoption of PS+ if they didn't remove the games from the service.
So much hate by the haters No one is forcing yall to buy it's a niche nes mini type console relax
How many more articles are we gonna get on this? I’ve never seen this many for Nintendo doing it
So many people trashing this that arent sony fans... its great. It will sell millions regardless. Im getting 2... 1 for me and 1 for collection 🤗🤪
Whats gonna ultimately disappoint you forbes is when this outsells xbone this holidays and your desperately trying to downplay it lol.
NES mini did that few months ago
It’s a neat collectors toy , I have lots of PS1 games on disc and digitally but this will be cool to play with my children .
I know someone that has a mini genesis system for their kids bedroom. They play, or at least played it fairly often, although I think they've moved onto other consoles in the past couple years. It has more games pre-installed on it though. I'd say systems like this have a place beyond the collectors market, but its not the kinds of situations that most hardcore gamers fall into. Also, a lot of them will be brought, played for a while when they are first opened, then probably collect dust for years before they end up in a yard sale....and most of those will be from people receiving them as gifts.
Trash article...it's Forbes so not surprised. Soon we will probably get a article from Kotaku being offended by something.
I've noticed a large amount of articles trying to rip sony apart. It is kinda hilarious to watch people attempt to find something they do wrong.
Nintendo can sell a box full of shit and Nintendo fans will still buy it. I dont get what the issue is with the mini Playstation. Yes it has less games than the NES mini because it requires more data than 8bits people. Come on!
Way to liken ps1 classic to a box of feces.
Speaking of not having any lasting appeal........................ ......Forbes.
Something can't last if it never existed. It's baffling how Forbes the business website and publication differs so much from the online cess pool of articles that is their contributor site.
I'm just disappointed that its only been announced now. I got a snes mini just about a month ago and hacked it. Having never had a snes while ps1 was my first home console, would much prefer to have the ps1!
Wow, forbes again, 2 in 2 days. They must really have an ingrained jealousy and hatred of Sony. Probably trying to appeal to that hipster trend of disliking anything popular.
Homebrew community will give it a very long life.
I think the article makes a valid point.
Lasting Appeal? Really? The NES classic had a few games on the console that were worth playing. We don't even know the full list of games yet!
Well it has lasting appeal to me, can’t speak for others and you probably shouldn’t either, Forbes.
PS1 games are intolerable now but PS2 games however are still surprisingly good. I find this mini console useless especially if some of the best games are on the store to purchase on PS3 except SILENT HILL 2! fkin Konami lost the source code.
My Samsung Galaxy s8+ Runs a Playstation, Sega Saturn, Sega Genesis, Snes and N64 all with Xbox controller support.. Easy pass
Talk about FUD! It was just announced and we already have the "concern trolling" out in full force. Thanks for protecting me in my safe bubble, Forbes! I'll make sure to avoid the disappointment of reading your website in the future.
Eh, they saved me that disappointment long ago when they made it so you couldn't get on without turning off your ad blocker. They've only gotten worse since then, and they seem to be one of the worst sites when it comes to trolling Sony. At least places like Polygon or Kotaku, and sometimes even Gamingbolt try to sometimes appear impartial, with the former two actually doing alright nowadays when they're not virtue signaling.
Seems most articles are throwing shade on the psx classic, seems weird that they all agree.
My head hurts after reading that. I lost about 10 IQ points. I've read alot of fanboy nonsensical arguments on this website, but this has to be in the top 5 most idiotic articles I've ever read.
