EA Games president: "It is an absolute imperative for the company to go online as fast as possible"

EA Games president Frank Gibeau said Wednesday that a prime focus for the firm was to push into the online space with all available speed.

"It is an absolute imperative for the company to go online as fast as possible, and the more projects we can do that have scale and quality the better," the exec told VG247 in San Francisco.

Pre-owned, expensive bundle packages and flat out piracy is killing our industry. Do you gamers want to see OUR industry go the same way as the current music industry? Digital distribution, Physical Media Product keys tied to single accounts with server side anti-piracy checks are the only way to preserve our industry and developers investments.

Those who disagrees, only care about pawning and stealing.

EA you have my full support.

@2: Leon are you familiar with pc mmo's? If not, then you should know that the physical media of a game is worthless, the .exe of those games can be downloaded right from the manufactures website, the software is worthless. It is the product key that is the only thing of value. Once you create an account, the product key, and game and cc are all tied to the account which makes piracy a non issue, esp with anti-fraud and piracy checks at the log in server. They check usernames, password, missing or altered file checks, macro checks, detection of multiple accounts with the same or invalid product keys.

Through software they can even tether games to specific consoles.

I agree and dissagree.

1- there is always a way to pirate, if you wish to pirate.

2- Your MMO argument is flawed, although you need to be legit for the real servers, free/private servers are everywhere.

3- I want Digital distrubution, I like it alot, got Battlefield 2142 and warhammer online from EA alone latetly. I also buy from Xbox live, PSN, steam on a regular basis. However, we should make sure that there is always choice, between retail and download ALWAYS. As a collector, I will fight till the death to make sure we always have that choice.

4- And comparing the videogames industry is retarded if you ask me, last time I checked, 10 million people ae not paying a monthly fee to listen to metalica, and Bungie can`t go preform Halo 3 in front of a live crowd of fans willing to pay to see them, to make some money.

Digital distribution is the future and WILL happen unless laws are passed to prevent pre-owned sales of intellectual properties stored on physical medias of ALL types. EULA's and TOSA's need to reflect those laws and make such crimes punishable by law. Then and Only then will the Gamestop's and GAME's of this world discontinue their pilfering practices.

wow, avoid all the points I made and repeat your bickering.

I agree with you, I want Digital distrubutionscatch that, I HAVE it. However I dissagree strongly that is should be the only way to go. AS I said before, I will make sure that we always have choice, that is all. I run a Microplay in down town mtl, we are not all mega corporations like EB or GAME. Videogame trade-ins and trades are part of my and many other gamer`s gaming culture and are here to stay, deal.

You want me to address each of your "points", then so be it.

1)True that. But you can make it VERY difficult for them to do so.
and with an all and ONLY digital distribution system, you can control and patch security issues quickly and effectively.

2) All that is assuming you could get your hands on server side software to host the client on. Good luck with that. Otherwise it would be nothing more then a LAN. If you want to play and earn online achievements....you will HAVE to be legit.

3)"I run a Microplay in down town mtl, we are not all mega corporations like EB or GAME. Videogame trade-ins and trades are part of my and many other gamer`s gaming culture and are here to stay, deal."

If you really cared about videogames you would not sell "trade-ins".
Admit it, you care more about money then games. This is why developers are being forced to take theses measures.

4)Most artist are lucky if they can sell 500,000 copies legit. It's getting so bad record companies want a portion of an artist ticket proceeds on future shows, record sales aren't enough anymore. What people like you fail to realize is that movies, music, and games are "INTELLECTUAL PROPERTIES" you don't have the right to own the actual game code, or song, or a single still from a movie. YOU ONLY OWN THE PIECE OF MEDIA IT IS STORED ON. The "intellectual properties" of that digital code stored on that media have Terms of Service Agreements and EULA's that PREVENT you from reselling it. deal.

With Pre-owned games. Not to mention if they aren't being sold at Gamespot they will be sold on craigslist or EBay. Secondly you will NEVER stop software piracy, this is an unfortunate truth. Lastly, digital distribution is nice but cannot be implemented to a full retail scale. This is due simply to monthly bandwith restrictions from major ISPs. The other problem is physical storage space. Even a terabyte of space would not be nearly enough to go to a digital dist. only scheme. Not to mention that magnetic media is far less reliable than optical media.

*face palm*

So everyone is a money hungry pig that only wants to make money to you right? I have come to the conclusion that you are either a communist or a teen filled wih never ending knowledge. You don`t want us to have choice? you don`t want us to be able to choose how we buy games? you just want to to let the corporations control all we buy? I find that quite ironic coming from a guy that thinks used games and trades are only about money.

Once they control everything we buy, we lose, the end, no passing GO, go directly to jail. Sorry, but I don`t want that world, I want a world with choice, If I want to download a great MMO or an online shooter I will, but If I want to buy a collectors edition of FF13 with a bunch of bells and whistle, I want that choice available for me also.

Talk about piracy!

Digital Distribution for games would move the entire media market to go digital! Piracy would reign supreme on the internet!

You have to be kidding me!

RJ20003647d ago

is EA like 2-8 years behind? Really they realize it now? I read the article and I didn't think it was as simple as the title... but it kinda is.

Atleast they are doing the right thing now I guess
