Uncharted 4: A Thief's End Vs. Shadow of the Tomb Raider - Who Did It Better?

The final installment in Lara Croft's rebooted adventure, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, released with mostly positive reviews. It gave players more of what is expected from this popular franchise with more tombs and opportunities for exploration than previous games. But how does it compare to Nathan Drake's final adventure? Uncharted 4 is a masterpiece. The story, graphics, animations, and gameplay are all a step above Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

UCForce129d ago (Edited 129d ago )

Most importantly, Uncharted 4 know how to maintain the balance between humor and serious at the same time. Nathan Drake have character development from cocky treasure hunter to more mature and wiser. Shadow of Tomb Raider take way too serious and Lara Croft in this game is somewhat selfish and psychotic person, little redeem value.

BiggerBoss129d ago (Edited 129d ago )

I wouldn't call UC4 a "masterpiece", but it's definitely better than the tomb raider games.

I loved UC4, the gameplay and story are incredible, but UC2 and UC3 just clicked with me more.

itsmebryan129d ago

Why does a story have to have humor to he good? Dramatic stories don't have to be funny. She is not a cocky treasure Hunter. Look at the trailer for rise of the Tomb raider. She is talking to a psychiatrist about the trauma from the first game. She is a damaged person suffering with the fact she had to kill people. That's what drives me nuts with marvel movies. They are in a life or death fight and they are making snarky one liners.

"Uncharted 4: A Thief's End Vs. Shadow of the Tomb Raider - Who Did It Better?"

both did. They both became the catalyst for one-another.

UltraNova128d ago

Let me put it this way, if you took the best parts of each Tomb raider reboot games and made the absolute best TR game it would still be a step down to U4. Truth is U4 set the bar too high.

rainslacker128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

I can't say for SOTTR since i haven't played it yet, but

I'd say the first two TR games were better than UC1 on a technical level. The story in the first two also had more depth than the first UC game which was kind of shallow, and it was so well liked because it had really likable characters. It's not to say that the first UC game were bad technically, just TR had more going on, with deeper stories than it. But the first UC games came out 6 years prior, so its understandable that it would not be quite as much as you'd see later.

That being said, UC2 and onward were better than the first two TR reboot games. Both on a technical level, and most definitely in the story department. The set pieces made more sense in the UC games. The characters were much more likable. The characters actually had better motivations and personalities. And most importantly, the characters and their relationships grew with each iteration. TR has none of that story wise. Both the first two TR games were still technically good games though, and worth a play through because they did a lot of things very well.

UC4 though, that was a really good game. Great story and characters. Great pacing except in one part when you are first marooned on the island. Pacing was a problem in both TR games, and both seemed like they could end their stories several sections before they actually did. Great graphics, although on powerful PC's, both TR games were really beautiful.

"Why does a story have to have humor to he good? "

It doesn't. But humor helps people relate to characters, and offers a break from the serious. Comedy relief and all that. Uncharted had a much better balance between the two.

The TR games though don't try to strike that kind of balance though. They're just Lara being all angsty and serious, with almost no redeeming qualities whatsoever. The writer tried too hard to get us to relate to Lara by making her a broken person, without ever really resolving her conflict in a satisfactory manner. Through the first two games, her advancement as a character has been shallow and unrealistic, and by the end of the 2nd game, she was pretty much the same person she was at the start of the first....just more depressing as she moved from being a wide eyed treasure hunter thrown into a situation she couldn't handle, to being a crazy lunatic who couldn't separate reality from her daddy issues.

S2Killinit128d ago

Its not even a competition. UC is a masterpiece. Especially UC2 and 4.

The animations and detail in Uncharted 4 are vastly superior to SotTR. Uncharted also tells a serious story, but they still manage to have fun. Drake and Co are beaming with charisma while Lara comes off as dry and serious. The writing is dramatically better in Uncharted as well. The writing and the performances.

BiggerBoss129d ago

Without a doubt. Other devs may try to say that their games are better, but they'll never say that their animations, or writing, or attention to detail is better.

ND is top-notch in those fields, and I would love to hear otherwise.

Uncharted 4

Graphics? Story? Characters? Development? Animation?

Nope (well yes) but for me...Uncharted got 4 main games in along with a expansion DLC story and a prequel handheld game yet they didn’t ONCE have to change it into something it wasn’t to keep it “fresh”. They stuck to its roots through and through then decided to send it off when they it was time pacing future games out to god knows when. That’s respect.

Instead of Tomb Raider becoming a Shadow if it’s former self. LARA: First Blood Part III.

I might have my conflicting feelings for Uncharted 4 but I respect it and NaughtyDog.

Ra3v3r129d ago

Yeah but bear in mind the Uncharted franchise has been going for 10/11 years
compared to the 22 years of Tomb Raider. The main series has always been produced by the same developer as well, where as Tomb raider has been through so many Devs over the course of its history and everyone has tried to put their own stamp on Lara.

As for Tomb Raider becoming a shadow of its former self (I see what you did there, well done 😁) I personally feel like it's gone back to its roots. Combat is minimised and the tombs and puzzling are front and centre as they always should have been. Yes it leans heavily on set pieces that are clearly inspired by Uncharted but I'd also say Uncharted owes a lot to TR for the foundations laid by Core in the 90s.

Both are great series but I do think that TR could do to lighten up a little.

SuperSonic91129d ago

We should appreciate both games.
Why should everything be a competition.
This corporate console war should stop.
This is the ugly side of "comoetition" .
Just appreciate both games.

DarkVoyager129d ago (Edited 129d ago )

Who said anything about not appreciating both games?

They’re both good games it’s just that Uncharted 4 is on another level.

xXxSeTTriPxXx129d ago

Why is this even a question?

salmonade129d ago

I honestly feel there are bots disliking this. DarkVoyager's comment is friggin FACT as far as any sane person is concerned.

Orionsangel128d ago

Uncharted 2 was a masterpiece. Uncharted 4 was only good.

AspiringProGenji128d ago

Someone hacked the dislikes LmAO

FloydianAndroid128d ago

I disagree that uncharted 4 is a masterpiece. It’s a fun popcorn game with great graphics and annoying climbing sequences and status quo set pieces. The story is okay. I just don’t think uncharted as a series is all that great. Not even in the same league with god of war or the yakuza series or the last of us.

Tomb Raider .. more Adventure than Run and Gun Shooter.

MaximusPrime_129d ago

That doesn’t make sense for an 18 rated game (here in UK). Tomb raider is more gory, more violence, more blood but equal amount of adventure with Uncharted 4 (a 16 rated game)

BiggerBoss129d ago

I wanted to like the new Tomb Raider, but it's just turned into the bargain-bin version of Uncharted.

lxeasy129d ago

Honestly who cares they both are amazing games.

TKCMuzzer128d ago

No where near the amount of adventure when it first started all those years ago.

THC CELL129d ago (Edited 129d ago )

I've not even played tomb raider and gunna say uncharted not cause I am a fan but it's a fact.

A cross over game would be fun, with comady the uncharted team can pull off will be great. Lara croft aways sound miserable or like she should be on other side of phone on babestation

XbladeTeddy128d ago

^You never played Tomb Raider so why make an opinion? And based on her voice of all things...Your post failed with your first 6 words.

128d ago
NecrumOddBoy129d ago

Yeah, wasted time arguing here. One is clearly Uncharted and the other isn't even worthy to be in its shadow.

leoms129d ago

lmao, I see what you did there. ''its shadow''

128d ago
AspiringProGenji129d ago

2 years after and SoTR couldn’t rate higher than Uncharted 4. I think it’s time to stop bringing Uncharted into the discussion and TR fans to accept it will never top the greatness of the Uncharted series

-Foxtrot129d ago

Bu Bu but Uncharted copied Tomb Raider completely

BiggerBoss129d ago

I think people shut up about that after Rise failed to top Uncharted 4

chiefJohn117129d ago

Lol ppl here live and die by meta critic. No opinion for themselves

Lime123129d ago

I know. How can any Xbox fan care about metacritic when in 5 years Xbox One had 1 (one) "exclusive" with metascore 90+.

AspiringProGenji129d ago (Edited 129d ago )

Pretty sure Metacritic is also full of people with their opinions, bur let’s pretend MC is just a robot now

chiefJohn117129d ago (Edited 129d ago )

Riight cause meta critic is one universal score where everyone rated the games with the exact same score. Won't find 78 game be reviewed with a top score or a goty worthy review. nope everyone rated it 78/100 /s 🙄.

And why this dude lime keep stalking me? Htf hasn't he been banned yet? Lol dude go play Spiderman or nothing better to do with your life?

Someone review sotr as a goty contender and look at the reactions on here. Y'all live and die by mc overall score. IDGAF if a game rated 99 if I think it's trash it's trash. If a game is rated a 70 but I feel it's goty than dammit it's my goty. But y'all? Nope 🐎 or ofc anything that fits the narrative. All the flip flopping this gen you'd think ppl were pancakes lol

chiefJohn117128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

Wow didn't expect so many upvote I guess ppl here are more rational than I thought. Glad to see other feel the same and have a head on their shoulder.

@aspiring lime123 he filled my pm with spam after I owned and after blocking him he's been following me around every article

@Bearded for what? Speaking the truth? Call it like I see it.

Movefasta1993128d ago

preachhhhh, n4g people live and die by metacritic score, neither one of my top 3 games of all time have a 90metacritic; Demon's souls, fallout new vegas, devil mayc ry 3. But do I give a damn? Hell no, I value my opinion over anybody elses.

CoinOrc128d ago

Cause metacritic is a more objective measure of quality than your opinion.
“IDGAF if a game is rated 99”
No one gives af about your opinion either.

chiefJohn117127d ago

Lol coin said metacritic is a more objective measure than his own opinion. See what I mean? Ppl let metacritic decide for themselves like sheep
