The Walker Review | The PlayStation Brahs

The PlayStation Brahs:

“Virtual Reality has a lot going for it. Almost every genre can be experienced and enjoyed. It’s yours for the taking. The question then becomes have you done this before and would you want to do it again or is the question more of a let’s see what is presented and see how well it executes? So when Developer Haymaker Game and Publisher Winking Entertainment unleashed The Walker for the PlayStation VR, the questions I had to ask of what did I get myself into and what would I take away from it all of this were then added to the list of questions.”

I honestly didn't find the enemies THAT hectic. And it always surprises me that Tech Raptor is the only site that mentioned about the lack of variety of enemies. Review sites like this, Gamepitt and Gaming Respawn makes it sound like The Walker is really that varied but in reality, it really isn't.

If you want a good hectic wave shooter, just get yourself Brookhaven or Blasters of the Universe. Walker is only recommendable if you're a big fan of wave shooters, and....well, yeah, that's pretty much it. But even then, $20 is too much. Personally, the game got bring after three levels, and when the game wanted me to play the same game three times just to "beat it", I gave up. It really amazes me that people actually managed to find The Walker to be THAT great. Even the director of Sony Asia forgotted The Walker even existed during the interview about china hero project.

Meh. Personally, the game was very mediocre. I have to admit, the gunplay and the magic usage felt satisfying, the art style was pretty good, and I did have some fun on the highest difficulty.

However, that's where the pros ends. The story was shallow with barely any real conclusion (atleast there's no terrible english voice over), enviroments lacks any interactions (aside from maybe in one stage), there are only 5-6 stages in the game, enemy variety is very lackluster (three basic enemies and two bosses, and only one of these is actually worth a challenge), same can be said with the combat variety (three guns, three swords, two magic spells), rampage mode lacks any challenge, sound effects are rather mediocre, no locomotion movement, and the score system is not enough to convince me to play the game again (unless if it's for the trophies).

Personally, the game is only recommendable for hardcore wave shooter fans, and people who find Brookhaven or Blasters of the Universe too much for them. All in all, the game is playable but forgettable and in the end, it feels like the game came out way too late. Is basically baby's first Brookhaven Experiment. I mean, there's a good reason why the director of China Hero Project didn't mention The Walker's release during an interview about PS4's china support.

Okay, now this is just going to far. Even Gamepitt didn't gave a score this high.

All I can say is that the only good things about the game is the designs, graphics and gunplay. What I don't like is the terrible sound quality that ruins the inmersion, the lackluster enemy variety (3 enemies, 2 bosses), lack of locomotion(ironic, isn't it?), the shallow story that gets forgotten, the lackluster sword combat, the barebones survival mode, and the magic mechanic feels more like a proof of concept than anything. I don't think the game is terrible but with so many better wave shooters that costs the same or less than The Walker, is hard to recommend the game unless you're a hardcore wave shooter fan. And personally, that score is WAY too high for a game that's basically a mediocre wave shooter with little content that costs $20.

Then again, looking at ZC's other reviews uploaded on this site, I guess I'm not surprised (a 10/10 for Scribblenauts Showdown? You wot mate?).

Mmh. A 86 is bit too high for a game like this. I feel like the perfect score for the game would have been between 60 and 70 *(for me anyway, it would be a 50), because no way would I call this game one of the best wave shooters on the platform. Is just as perfectly average as most mediocre wave shooters, except mediocre wave shooters like Time Carnage have honestly more content than what this game has to offer.

Also, am I the only one still surprised that the story of the game is still being aplauded? The story is as basic as a story in a endless runner mobile game.

Also, the fact that this dude gave the game a score higher than the score he gave to Blasters of the Universe and Raw Data ismaddening. I enjoyed both of those games a lot more than I did with TheWalker, and I'm not even a wave shooter fan. Got bored after 2 hours in The Walker, and I couldn't care less for its "Rampage" mode, which is basically more barebones than the 50-min/1-hour long campaign. Gunplay was okay but everything else was just meh. Not worth $20. Maybe when it's lower than $10, I might recommend it.

The only praise I can give to Zombie Chimp is that at least he gave Brookhaven Experiment a score higher than The Walker's.

Funny how the reviewer praised the enemy variety, the story and magic usage, because personally, those were some of the weakest parts of the game. First off, there was barely any story after the tutorial level, and when fighting the final boss, there was barely any conclusion other than "to keepn fighting", which is just playing the same game but on a higher difficulty. Second, the enemy variety is lacking, because there are only 2 bosses (the crow hag and the giant red demon) and 3 basic enemies (crawling grunts, soldier with sword, and soldier with bow). Finally, there are only 2 spells in the game, and while using them can be fun, they mostly involve on one shotting the enemy. Seriously, the magic usage is anything but "unique".

The only good things I liked about the game are ironically the things the reviewer disliked, which are the graphics and the gun combat. Personally, I still think Techraptor's review on it is still the most "on-point" review of the game.

Lol

As a chinese wave shooter, it's fairly average. But as a China Hero Project game, it is so far the worst. China Hero's next game Kill X looks somewhat rough but no doubt it looks way better than The Walker.

BeginsNightime2446d ago

What's so special about only using two spells (one that's freezes and one that's deals a lot of damage)? Am I the only one who doesn't get the praise for this?

Giraiga132445d ago

Same here. Pure Playstation and some other site liked this mechanic but I really can't put my finger on its appeal. Like, what you said, one freezes the enemy, and one deals a lot of damage. Is not like there's any other magic spells you can use. Even if it's because the way you use them, that still doesn't count. You might as well go ahead and say that the magic system in the game is on par with the likes of Skyrim's.
