"This means if you buy Saints Row 2, bio Shock, Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3 you're going to be out 17gb of space on your hdd's"
Can sony do something??..im sick of my games screen tearing, and installs and games runnning megearly. I dont care WHO'S fault it is, it doesnt change the fact that this is happening.
why can xbox360 - an incredibly defective machine - run these games WITHOUT installs, and in some cases run them smoother.
Sony needs to do something about these installs. We are installing over half the game onto our PS3's if they are multiplatform games, and In some instances we are even installing more than half the game.
As I point out, it doesn't affect me much right now (320gb owner) but anyone buying these 40gb systems is in a serious fix.
I don't think that Sony even produces the 40GB PS3's anymore. Now the 80GB PS3's are standard across almost all major territories now. I'm not sure if Australia has gotten the 80GB PS3's yet, but most of Europe has them and Japan will be getting them very soon too.
Sony did the right thing by chopping the 40GB models and making the 80GB PS3's the new standard because they probably realized that a lot of games were requiring installs and they wanted to give people more space to download content from the PSN video store. 40GB PS3's have been off shelves in the United States for a few months now.
Um does everyone forget that there is a delete button(yes I understand that you play more the one game at a time, but thats why they have big hdds), PLUS.....
I read awhile ago that the PS3 version was running smoother than on the 360 version, but obviously the PC is probably the smoothest. So..... yeahhhhh
What are you playing all 4 games at once? Play the game and then delete the install. How is that so hard?
I don't know am I the only one that likes to play a game and finish it, then mess around with it a little bit afterward. Then move on to the next game.
I know when I start to many games at once some don't get finished. Then I feel like I didn't get my moneys worth from the game.
I understand your point, but they have been selling the 40 gig for almost a year now. Are you saying that install base does not matter?
The question that should be asked is "why are these installs necessary, if it is not on the 360". Simple question that no one seems to be able to answer...
I have a 60 gigger... With Warhawk, R&C quest for Booty and a number of other online only games installed and I'm running out of space. Hard drives are cheap, but i shouldn't need to upgrade, just to play a Disc based game.
i feel the PS3 has a big problem that the devs and sony dont want u to know. cuz most of the ps3 games a requiring installs. maybe the blueray drive is butt ugly slow
"Tired of mandatory hard drive installs on PlayStation 3? Blame Blu-ray... By nature, the outer and inner parts of a disc move at different speeds while a disc is spinning, regardless of format....While DVD drives can read data at those differing speeds, Blu-ray reads at one speed.
When a publisher asks you to install a game on PS3, it’s because they’re moving some of the disc data to an area of your console that has much faster read access: the hard drive.
...Some developers copy their game’s data on the disc multiple times...
Bethesda Softworks executive producer Todd Howard recently publicly confirmed the duplicated data technique as a strategy on his company’s “Fallout 3.”
The bottom line on the installs is this; BluRay is a movie format, it isnt as fast as DVD (or HD-DVD).
You can thank Sony's MPAA division for mandatory installs and long waits.
Let's stop with this Sony and the hardware fault. All the freaking people who keeps thinking that it has anything to do with hardware have to get their heads out their ass!! There are plenty of games both exclusive and multiplatform that has great graphics without installs. I'll just name one of each:
Uncharted: STILL the best looking game on console AND not one load screen.
Deadspace: I STILL can't believe EA published this game!!!
thats what you get for just going by the name and not the product. ps3 just dosent live up to the playstation brand. honestlty, its a console that sega would make. ps3 just sucks no matter which way you look at it. no games, high price and on top of that its still the inferrior console of the 2, all ports are better on 360 and so is the online. the only place the ps3 leads 360 in is reliability. but i wouldnt be so shure cause it too has the YLOD and blueray drive malfunctions. i see people complaining about them all the time in the ps3 forums.
I have an original 20 gb and still haven't upgraded yet. I delete the install after I'm done playing.
I've been a computer guy for over a decade. If I ever run out of space I'll buy a damn HDD. I just haven't needed it yet. I have an elite 120gb 360 and have yet to put anything on it either.
PS3 + headset + HDD + HD cable + delays, lies and BS... you'll have to be really crazy to buy a PS3 over a 360. So, basically games in PS3 require from 3-7GB of saving space, which is just insane.
I play my PS3 a lot more than I do my 360. Many of the 360's heavy hitters I just haven't found fun. You'd have to be crazy to call someone crazy because they prefer one or the other console's games.
I bought a 360 because I didn't want to miss any good games. But I tried Halo 3, Crackdown, Saints Row 1, Kameo etc., and just didn't like them. Loved Gears and Mass Effect though (even though the stuttering frustrated me). I will continue to play each and every "good" 360 game. But after owning both, I can say, I prefer my ps3.
Multiplants get play on my PS3 as well. But only because it's quieter. Far Cry II will be on my PS3. This time because my stupid play and charge just died after two recharges. Summofa ...
Ok hold your horses. What headset I need to buy? Wait a minute, my bluetooth hands free that came with my cellphone works on my PS3! Problem solved! HD Cable? ok I'll give you that. But that still costs less than the $50 annual you pay for Live. Why you need to be crazy to buy a PS3 over a 360? How about reliablity? Brand loyalty? Being the successor the the world's most popular console ever made? How about MGS4? LBP? Resistance 2? Killzone 2? FFXIII Versus? God of War 3? I'm not what you'd call crazy... Im just more of a Sony guy than a MS guy (not much interest in Halo and Fable allthough Gears does looks tempting).
Still sometimes I wish there was the OPTION(!) to install games to HD on my XBox, too. It would speed-up loading times, even though they aren't so bad. But the main reason for me is that it would cause the DVD-drive to get less on my nerves, its freaking loud. But then we should have the "choice" to use our own harddrives, not the ridiculously expensive ones from MS. Look at the PC. From a technical perspective its no problem to play every game directly from disk. Still developers choose to use the HD. If games could be installed to the XBox HD, it would reduce [texture] pop-ups in pretty much any game (GTA IV for instance).
BluRay may be poorly suited for gaming, at least PS3 uses have a REAL choice to upgrade their HD.
but if you can spare the cost of a new game, you can buy an HDD that will make installs a worry of the past. I did and now I have more space than I know what to do with. I'm looking for software so I can convert DVDs into MP4 format so I can get some of my fav movies on the PS3. The installs have got to be annoying for those of you with a 20 gib hdd (are there any of you out there?) or with the 60, but, again, if you can spare the cost of a game then I can't see why you wouldn't upgrade.
Delete the game data when you done with a game! 3.5GB is reasonable considering the game streams and doing this from the hard drive would help prevent loading screens.
Uncharted was one of the runners-up in IGN Best Graphics Technology Award of 2007, losing to Crysis (which everyone know that it had the best the graphics, that is if you have a well-built PC to play the game in its maximum capabilities).
That still does not leave out the fact that Uncharted runs without any installation and loading.
"Good.Less loading times" I agree this part but the rest noooooooo, "Smooth framerate make the PS3 Version" Did you say Bioshock, Fallout 3? I love my PS3, but We have to accept the true, developers don't care about PS3.
Whats F-ed is when your hard drive is full and you want to play an older game, you have to uninstall, then install the old one again. Install times range from 20-45min I wonder how many times I can play through a game switching disc before it's even with that 20-45min. I could probably switch disc a 1000 times before it reaches that time.
LOL not only did you have to wait 6 months for the PS3 to release, but you have to wait for games, rumble, ports, firmware updates, home, delay after delay, then you have to wait for install.
LOL and you wonder why it's called "Waitstation 3" and whats F-ed even more is that it makes little to zero difference. The Playstation brand is doomed, I'll be looking forward to renting your games for the next Xbox.
Sony... from king to sh!t, but at least they got that Blu-ray out for a couple years.
Want to know why you need to install your games? Ahhh! forget it, if I told you, you would spin and jump on the denial boat.
@ retarded lobster LMAO Where did u read that GTA4 has faster loading times than ps3?????????? YOU'RE SO DUMB, 360 HAS CRAPPIER GRAPHICS, FRAMERATE, NO FULL SCREEN TV THINGIE, AND 2X THE LOADING TIME, WHICH WOULD BE AROUND 5 SECONDS!! IT'S PPL LIKE YOU THAT MAKE PPL LIKE ME HATE 360 OWNERS !!
well people with 40gigs do.hahaha oblivion...4.6gb required sony may cry 4...4.7gb-20 min install full auto 2...1.7gb required spider man 3...2.3gb-five min install hot shot golf...5gb-five min install skate...2.5gb--five min install rainbow six vegas 2...3.4gb required wwe smackdown vs raw 2008....2.3gb required F.E.A.R...2.5gb required NBA 07....3gb-ten min install lost....3.6gb---six minute install conflict denied ops...2.5gb required beowulf---2.5gb---five minute install GT prologue--5349MB..13 minutes install Quake=4.1 GB install GTA 4...5 min install. battlefield:BC...300mb required Bourne Conspiracy..5GB Install required metal gear solid 4...8 min install,4.6 GB required BIOSHOCK......5.0 GB required, 10 min mandatory install Vampire Rain....3.8GB install required Fracture...1900MB required=4 minutes little big planet....600MB Install required Socom Confrontation... 3.1GB Install required (new)Far Cry II....3.5 gb install required
I'm more angry as to why the installs and the game doesn't improve. I rather a game install to help the game run better and smoother than a game that doesn't install. I think Sony drop the ball this gen, Socom is halfazz and thankyou sony for ruining it. I got rid of my 360 because it suck and now Socom was the biggest disappointment to me this gen. Oh well let's see what RE2 and killzone2 have to offer..
I recieved this game today.. yes it has a 3,5 GB install but OMFG it's only 3 minutes installing or so :\ You can take a quick crap meanwhile or look at the FarCry 2 map that came with the package.
Btw the install option DOES work. Loading times are pretty damn quick and you can drive around the entire place without any loading.
Socom Confrontation is not made by Zipper. The PS3 socom is made by Slant Six Games. I'm only going to get Socom Confrontation when I feel like getting the bluetooth otherwise I'm skipping this title.
Its not the time of the installs people are upset about - its the size of the installs..lets say you are taking that quick crap...now if it was a quick small crap and flushed away with 1 push of the button then you wouldn't have that much of an issue - now if you were taking a quick crap and it filled the whole bowl and started to over flow because your bowl is too small for that quick crap you are taking - then i think at that point you wouldn't be too happy now would ya...
Yeah, sure thing... Oh, wait I already did; As I've stated 3 times now. This is also very helpful for people who want the game and don't know what they are walking into. I posted this cause some people might not be as fortunate as me and you... Some people might be fighting for space and this is a good heads up.
I'm sorry enough people disagree and or hate the very mention of my name, but I posted this in good faith.
And thanks, I'm actually intending to get this game and it's good to know how big the install is. I have a 60 gigger that's getting a bit full with movies and stuff.
I didn't know that Far Cry 2 required a PS3 install and this is very good to know, and I do plan on buying it, but I really don't see what's the big deal about an install. I probably would have read about the Far Cry 2 install for the PS3 in the next issue of the Official Playstation Magazine in their review of the game, but I guess it's good to know before hand.
As soon as an article is approved about a PS3 game having an install usually flamewars and fanboy comments start going back and forth on N4G, it's just ridiculous.
I still have my launch 60GB PS3 and will be upgrading to a larger HDD sometime early next year, but I have plenty of space to last me until then.
If your done with the game, just un install it. It doesn't mess up your game save data does it? Because if it doesn't, then installs are no big deal. You can always re install it if you ever decide to go back to the game.
Basically, as long as the game save data stays the same and you can come back to it even after re installing a game then there shouldn't be TOO much crying about installs
1 problem of installs is that while it's beneficial, it makes the ps3 seem less powerful and blue ray seem less effective.
2 it's a time waster, and while you pointed out that it doesn't really have any effect it can get annoying, specially if your games end up taking more and more space on your hardrive. Sometime you just want to play a game NOW, and not have to wait those 3-5-10 min on the install.
I personally don't care either way, multiple discs or installs, as long as the game is worth it.
why the frig should we have to put up with these ridiculous instals when the 360 doesnt??? Why does my game require an install to run on par with 360's version??
no its BullSh!t.
Genesis5 - I like to play my games wenever the hell i want and not have to.."Install" it each time i crave a session. And i do play more then 1 game at once.
Does this mean that PC seem less powerful? You sound like a fool. I give you the Uncharted example awesome game, no instal better than 90 percent of Xbox360 games. Why are people making such a fuss over nothing. The time wasted is minimal and space can be got by deleting it. Have a great day.
The difference is that the PC counterpart looks better, in every way, the use of the hard drive is justified.
In the case of the 360 and ps3 it's that the ps3 has the larger disc storage and requires installs and yet the games don't look better (some exceptions). It leads people to question to usefullness of it all.
You are spot on Xi, nevermind the children crying, you don't sound foolish at all. Fortunately I don't have space problems but I can understand how some people feel like this is bullsh!t.
Also, isn't the pc version like 3.5 GB? That is just weird...
The Standard PS3 is 80GB now...you will never fill that up. The Xbox 360 is getting full game installs in the fall update....it maybe be optional on the Xbox 360...but fully installing the game makes it run better.
Frycry II has probably less than 9 GBs of data...so a 3.5 GB install is fine...this game is gonna run fast...even Resistance 1 has a hard disk install right?
Yeah, people complain about the price of games this gen. Do you believe those that can't afford it will get one? Like little kids, young twelve year old's, or the unemployed. I'm not saying it's a bad thing. On top of this, you have to find another external drive to put all your game saves, info, video what ever you want to keep... What you brought in the stores. Movies come to mind.
I plan to upgrade soon but I have the money to do so. I work for living. But the only reasons to have half installs are for speeder loading, limited screen tears, etc. I would really wished it was optional but meh. I wonder if those who buy bigger HDD's will feel left out when/if they release an even bigger 2.5 inch SAYA drive.
The install took less than 5 minutes for me. Not really an issue. The only issue I had with the game so far was a sound sync issue. I shot a propane tank and the sound came about a second after the explosion. Weird...
y0haN might have a point. If they seriously took the speed of sound into account when they made this game...holy crap. Reminds me of how you need oxygen around you to use a flamethrower in Dead Space. Games are getting more awesome all the time :D
who cares if it install data. what is it like a 4-5 min wait? everyone needs to get over it. to the people who are saying "why does the xbox have no installs but the ps3 system does." get a xbox360 if you dont like waiting 4 mins. quite complaining.
i have a ps3 60 gig, i have not upgraded and yes its because i am lazy and that £50 - £60 could be used to buy another game ( with so many great games coming out i need all those £50 notes )
all this talk about, get over it and its not that big a deal is just inconsiderate....solve the problem by brushing it under the carpet, i can...so should you.
its an inconvenience, even if it is just 2 or 3 min, at the very least it should be optional. people who don't care can instal, people who have a problem with it should be able to just play the game off the disc. if it really makes a huge difference to the game then trust me after a while they will take to the idea of installing games anyway.
i know that a 360 lover named Raven something will post a wall of useless text and in the end it will say install beyond. A very dumbfounded person of course.
"This means if you buy Saints Row 2, bio Shock, Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3 you're going to be out 17gb of space on your hdd's"

i only own a ps3. And this is crap.
Good.Less loading times and smooth framerate make the PS3 version superior.PS3 wins once again and again and again.
Sorry xbots:(

wow and I care why? I have a 320gb HDD I think I will manage. BTW if you haven't upgraded by now then get on it.
I didn't know that Far Cry 2 required a PS3 install and this is very good to know, and I do plan on buying it, but I really don't see what's the big deal about an install.
