Star Citizen’s CitizenCon 2948 livestream is going to be locked behind a paywall

I’m starting to think that Star Citizen is nothing more than a protracted social experiment to see how much fans and loyalists can endure before they crack. Cloud Imperium’s crowd-funded game has been in development for what feels like a lifetime, with extraneous revenue streams – like expensive in-game ships – helping to pad the company’s coffers. Now they're charging fans to watch the Citizencon livestream

This game and everything around it is a scam.

likely started as an overly ambitious project, which ten devolved into a money making scheme that cold still be made real. Someday.

I feel so good that I have never spent a single penny on this scam :)))

It’s a damn cash grab b/c they’ve probably blown through money and the dream is slowly dying.

They should let everyone know how much they have left, so we know how long it will be until everyone walks out the door.

They seriously need someone overseeing this, getting a product out, and then determining what else can be worked on. It’s a game of service anyway, so focus on one thing, release it, and then add content.

Making like 3 games at once set in a pervasive universe with this much detail, it will never be finished.

The money they've made without even releasing this turd...why would it even release?

And when it does the most expensive turd flop in history teaching us all something... maybe.

Lot of stupid people out there with money to throw away...

UCForce50d ago

This is scam from the beginning.

I give them the benefit of the doubt: I think the project started out with sincerity. But, money! Throw enough of it at anyone, and they're bound to get addicted to it, and corrupted by it.

joab77749d ago

And insane amounts. Don’t get me wrong. It’s a great concept, but they need some damn management.

Chris Roberts needs more money, because $200 million just isn't enough.

They don't use development funds for events, they use subscriber money which is a separate income for such expenses.

In this case the event was larger than usual and the subscriber money barely covered it and the streaming was an extra which would cost more than usual because of the two simultaneous avenues they've planned.
Which is why they, like similar events, have it behind a paywall to minimize the losses.

The opening keynote and ending will be streamed for everyone and everything will eventually be uploaded to YouTube.

Just noticed, they have now even decided to air everything for free:

"We're going to cut back on the live-streaming crew / costs but have both stages streamed for anyone with a Star Citizen user account.
Star Citizen Content Creators are welcome to rebroadcast our stream live.

If you would like to support the additional costs of streaming all the presentations, you can support the show by purchasing the CitizenCon digital goodies package"

Every inch up to 3 is 100 dollars. All past 3 is 1000. 4 1000 dollars. 5 2000 and so on.
