So does that mean that HDR10 might phase out?

No. Dolby Vision and HDR10 are two different standards.

This story also shows in one of the screenshots that both HDR10 and Dolby Vision will coexist.

JBlaze2262478d ago

well I know they are two different standards. I was hoping that they combined resources then just having to switch between Dolby and HDR10

TheUndertaker852478d ago

You don’t have to switch? Both are supported.

All Dolby Vision is, to break it down, is a slightly upgraded and updated version of HDR10. As evidenced by the article as well Dolby Vision would currently only be supported via the Netflix app. If your display can handle Dolby Vision and the content is Dolby Vision supported Dolby Vision will be used. If the content is not Dolby Vision supported but HDR10 supported then HDR10 would be used.

If both are supported I’d wager the system chooses the higher standard, that being Dolby Vision. Not much different than what happens with resolution.

Not at all, but too enjoy Dolby Vision , you need a T.V. that supports it. I have a LG oiled tv and it supports both formats. But too be honest, I don`t see much of a difference in the two.

Any news when/if Dolby Vision support for 4K Blu-Rays will be added?
I am in Australia where the internet infrastructure is well.... horrible in a word and having HDR10 and Dolby Vision for Netflix is GREAT from Microsoft, my TV (LG OLED) already supports Dolby Vision native via the Netflix app (This is to take nothing away from Microsoft and their stellar support of newer media features.)
I am a Playstation guy (meaning I play most my multiplats on there, where my friends are yada yada yada but have a ONE X as it is a GREAT media device for high end 4K at a decent price and also allowed me to access the XBOX library of games.

So long story short (I do not comment much and when I do I feel I have 'defend' my comment as to not be called a fanboy or such....) Is there any news on 4K Blu-Ray Dolby Vision support incoming?

TheUndertaker852478d ago

As of right now there doesn’t appear to be details of Dolby Vision being added for 4K Blu-Rays but I’d imagine it will be implemented. They’ve already got the 4K Blu-Ray drive in the Xbox One X so it’d be believable that an update will come.

I’d also wager more content providers outside of Netflix will update to add support as some do offer Dolby Vision outside of Netflix.

Not a definitive yes or no but it would appear Netflix was quick on the draw.

Juiceid2478d ago

problem is they said its coming, but have been seemingly backtracking on their initial statement. Since even disney hasn't been putting Dolby vision on their discs, I wouldn't hold my breath.

2pacalypsenow2478d ago (Edited 2478d ago )

They confirmed that it will be added in the future.

Neonridr2478d ago

damnit.. wish Sony would support these features. My LG OLED supports Dolby Vision, love watching Netflix shows that offer it.

TheUndertaker852478d ago (Edited 2478d ago )

They do. Just not with PS4.

Reading around you seem better off using other devices outside of Sony for Dolby Vision. My understanding is that the feature on Sony devices has to be turned on manually rather than it doing it on the fly. Then when you’re done you have to manually shut it off or HDR features will try to push with content not made for HDR causing a bit of a mess.

Neonridr2478d ago

yeah I know some of the new Blu Ray players are coming with Dolby Vision, although it's not perfect like you said.

It's true it's not required since I can't watch my 4K blu rays through my PS4 anyways. So I would definitely be better off looking at an updated 4K player. Understandable why MS would push these features since people are using the console as the player as well.

Mylove15162478d ago

@neonridr. What PS4 do you have? I own many blu ray movies and my PS4 slim and my first gen PS4 play them. Does the pro not play blue rays? I'm being genuine with this because it doesnt make sense that the PS4 pro doesn't but the ones i have do.

Stanjara2478d ago (Edited 2478d ago )

PS4 and Pro regular Blu-ray yes, 4k UHD Blu-rays no. Xbox s and x 4k UHD Blu-ray yes.

Neonridr2478d ago

Dolby Vision is not supported with regular blu rays. It's a 4K HDR mode.

dangerousbrian02478d ago

I think HDR10 & Dolby Vision will coexist until one of the standards becomes more adopted mainstream wise like Blu-Ray & HD-DVD I doubt with the naked eye you could tell them apart but because Sony put Blu-Ray in the PS3 & Microsoft stuck with DVD instead of using HD-DVD the Blu-Ray won the disc storage format war last gen.

TheUndertaker852478d ago (Edited 2478d ago )

The rather large difference between your example and Dolby Vision/HDR10, from my understanding, is that Dolby Vision produced products still need to have HDR10 included or packed in.

They really aren’t competitors. Dolby Vision is merely upgraded HDR10. It also seems like that Dolby Vision needs HDR10 to exist.

Mulando2478d ago

Well they are. Dolby Vision is much more variable and can display HDR8->14Bit. The result is, that Dolby Vision need less bandwidth because the HDR information is also compressed. That is why pictures >HDR10 are possible with Dolby Vision (if your TV would support it)

Cat Quest III Is Heading to Apple Devices on August 8

"A big part of being a cat pirate is sailing the seas and traveling from place to place. What better way to do just that than by playing Cat Quest III on the go? Soon, aspiring kitty pirates will be able to enjoy the charming cat-themed action RPG on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. That should be a purrfect option for gamers who don't have the game on Switch or Steam Deck. The iOS version will still support 2-player local co-op, thankfully," says Co-Optimus.

Dark Quest 4 Will Bring Back the Co-op When It Comes Out Later This Year

"It could be said that Brain Seal Ltd, the developer of the Dark Quest series, is wishy-washy on co-op. Every other game is either single-player or co-op. Thankfully, the upcoming Dark Quest 4 will be one of the co-op ones. In fact, it looks like this will be the biggest and best game yet in the board game-style dungeon crawling series. A demo has recently arrived on Steam, and the game will come to both consoles and PC later this year," says Co-Optimus.
