So on the fence about this game... Never played the originals but Yakuza Kiwami 2 is coming out a week later!!! Anyone wanna sell me on the remaster?

Marcello2084d ago

Ok i will have try, whats putting you off so far that your on the fence ?? I can tell you that when i first saw this back in 2000 i wasnt sure i would like it, after a few hours i was totally engrossed.

Tankbusta402084d ago

Well the release is so close to Kiwami 2. I know the Yakuza series borrowed heavily from shenmue so I'm worried that if I purchase day one and start playing, a week later Kiwami 2 will come out and do everything better and I might shelve the game for a long time.

Does that make sense?

Marcello2084d ago

Never played any Yakuza but its a misconception that these games are similar, there not. I recommend you just go for it. I would only not recommend this to someone who has little patience & just prefers pick up & play action.

As a HUGE Shenmue fan, if you like the Yakuza style game play, and can only afford one title right now, I'd say go with Yakuza Kiwami 2. The 2 franchises have a lot in common, but I'd say Shenmue is a bit slower paced in it's story. But, literally every person in the game has a voice! They don't even do that in modern day games. Those voices may be pretty bad voice acting, but it is there. Lol I don't know how to sell you on buying it, but at the time these games came out, there was nothing close to it! I played these games back when they were new, and they have stuck with me to this very day. When kickstarter became a thing, I always told my buds that if they would just kickstart Shenmue 3, I would drop $100 on that, and I ended up having to put my money where my mouth was. lol Long story short, I know I'm going to love this remaster, but I have the nostalgia glasses on. Your mileage may vary!

Thanks for this response! Its not a money issue its more of a time issue...

MWH2084d ago

Go for it but only if you like this type of games, you'll love it and the ending of 2 will blow your mind.

princejb1342084d ago

Get ready for a treat. Honestly I think this game is overhype but maybe is because I was like 12 years old when I played it and it was ahead of my time

Moe-Gunz2084d ago

I'm a fan of both series. Yakuza has a more fun gameplay style but Shenmue has a more engrossing story/mystery. Yakuza is a series I always pick up and have fun with where as Shenmue is a series that has stuck with me for years. It's one of the best games/series ever made and is revolutionary.

Shenmue means so much that a friend of mine that I haven't spoken to in years contacted me when Shenmue 3 Kickstarter was announced at Sony's E3.

Every character can be spoken to, the mystery keeps unfolding, and the action scenes are impactful. The second entry is the better one, but I still love the first too.

Shenmue is brilliant and you can enjoy both Shenmue and Yakuza as they're similar but very very different. Shenmue is more of a open world mystery action adventure game. Yeah I said all those words lol.

The best part is its only $29 for both Shenmue 1 & 2

Marcello2084d ago

Yep bargin, tons of improvements on this remaster too

Definitely one of my favorite Dreamcast games (such an underrated system). It’s been too long. I’m thinking my reflexes are slower, making the then innovative QTE sections a little harder.

There's very few games that can touch the gamer's soul. However, Shenmue is one of those games. Dark Sniper is glad to see that gamers will finally get a chance to enjoy Ryo Hazuki's journey from revenge to manhood. Shenmue is one of the most iconic and revolutionary games back when it was released in 1999 and still holds up today.

If even one gamer goes through and completes both Shenmue I and II and understands the reason why us Shenmue fans have been clamoring for part III for over a decade, then that means these re-releases did what it needed to do.

Before Shenmue 3, you should play Shenmue 1 and 2 HD

GR: "In the 15 or so years between Shenmue installments, the fanbase has gained a reputation that they are obnoxious. While that might be true, their fanaticism and love for the series comes from a very real place. Having revisited Shenmue 1 and 2 HD recently, its innovation and historical importance still shines through."
