Super Mario 64 - Nintendo 64 versus Unreal Engine 4 PC fan project screenshot comparison

CryZENx, best known for his amazing Zelda Ocarina of Time remakes in Unreal Engine 4, is currently working on a Super Mario 64 tech demo in Unreal Engine 4. Although we don’t know what this demo will offer, CryZENx released a comparison screenshot between this Unreal Engine 4 PC fan project and its original Nintendo 64 version.

Oh uhh ...that looks like shit

letsa_go2465d ago

haha Yeah those trees are pretty bad!

Harkins17212465d ago

Good thing its still being "currently developed"

ChickeyCantor2464d ago

No. See the only reason it looks decent is because Unreals standard Rendering path makes it all shiny. It's completely void of a cohesive art direction and totally doesn't have that mario feel. The same with the Ocarina Unreal remake. Yes it mimics the games with higher rez and textures but completely lacks that magic both games have.

Harkins17212464d ago

Beyond many Zelda fans disagree with you. And many Mario 64 fans disagree with you on this. The magic is there. And if there more work put into it it can have more of that magic.

ChickeyCantor2462d ago

"Beyond many Zelda fans disagree with you. "
"And many Mario 64 fans disagree with you on this"

That's their prerogative. And I'm just saying they have shit taste and a complete lack of understanding the zelda and mario magic. Having highrez textures and motion blur doesn't provide the quality both franchises deserve. You have to do way more than that.

Zelda had many different artstyles troughout the franchise, but all were cohesive and didn't take you out of the game. These projects just dump weird particles and motion blur all over the place. Look at that bloody tree mate. It's garbage.

Harkins17212462d ago

No fucking shit the tree is garbage. It's still a work in development which it what I said from the first post. Give it time to fully develop and they can recapture the magic of old.

ChickeyCantor2462d ago

The tree looks nothing close to the original one. It has nothing to do with "work in progress" it's just an ugly ass tree. The zelda demos couldn't even recapture the magic of old. This won't either.

Harkins17212462d ago

You're complaining about a tree that is currently a work in progress. Kinda like games that are in alpha phases. Look at Kingdom Hearts 2.8 for example. The model of Terra looked very plasticy. After they continued to work on it his ugly ass face they improved it. The same thing can happen here. Im a huge fan of M64 and OoT and I can appreciate the work being put into this. So yes it has everything to do with a "work in progress" in a couple months it can look better than the tree from the original and properly adapted into the Unreal 4 engine. Hes simply showing off his work with the UR4 engine .

Same thing is happening with Crash/Spyro. Sorry you cant see it.

ChickeyCantor2462d ago (Edited 2462d ago )

I'm well aware of game development, I work in the sector. The tree is beside the point. It has nothing to do with work in progress. The Zelda Demos couldn't bring that magic either so this project will fail too. Yall on a tangent.

>Sorry you cant see it.

I'm sorry you think these projects actually capture anything zelda or mario.

Harkins17212462d ago

Fail? Its not meant to succeed. Its simply showing off 2 older games in Unreal 4 engine. Its a little side project for a fan of the series. Oh no. The horror! "Ya'll" on a tangent too. Seems just like you're way to picky to enjoy something so minor.

ChickeyCantor2462d ago

>Fail? Its not meant to succeed.

You need jesus

Harkins17212462d ago

He never specifies what he wants to do with the project. Is he trying to get Nintendos eye and make these 2 games into remakes? Or will he do it himself? No one knows exactly? Well then surely we cant say he failed nor he succeeded. But do go on brah.

ChickeyCantor2461d ago

You're going off on a tangent, I thought it was a "work in progress". Shit looks ugly. Doesn't capture the magic. Simply what it is.

Harkins17212461d ago

And you're doing everything you can to defend your point that a couple of trees that are a "work in progress" look like shit. Congratz.

ChickeyCantor2461d ago

Not even the point. But you keep at it tho.

Harkins17212461d ago

Exactly. It wasn't my point to begin with yet you keep saying the same thing. Move along already.

ChickeyCantor2460d ago (Edited 2460d ago )

"Exactly"

Still missed the point.

"work in progress"
" Its not meant to succeed."

You really need to work on your arguments.

Harkins17212460d ago

Now you're just trolling. Unless you really are this dumb.

ChickeyCantor2460d ago

Ah yes I must be trolling or dumb when you keep moving the goal post. If it's a work in progress then surely the end result is to succeed capturing the original magic, right?

But no you keep playing the mental gymnastics. If anything you're not a troll, but you're definitely dumb.

We already know how modern Mario 64 would look on Switch. SMO has that area in it at the end.

CobraKai2465d ago

N64 game still looks good. I like the blocky models and 2d trees

Super Mario 64 DS, a Twenty Year Reunion

WTMG's Leo Faria: "Super Mario 64 DS may not have been “better” than Super Mario 64, but it is indeed “more” than Super Mario 64, if that makes any sense. For a kid back in 2004, having a Nintendo 64 classic on the palm of your hand, with more content than the original, and a crapton of amazing minigames on the side, was more than enough to make me ignore the admittedly terrible controls I had to put up with. Two decades later, it bizarrely holds up. I can easily affirm it’s one of my favorite remakes of all time, even if it’s far from perfect… hell, possibly not even better than the game it was supposed to be an improvement of."

Super Mario Odyssey Turns Seven - Ranking the 3D Mario Games

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "With the Switch getting on in years and the prospect of a new Nintendo console growing closer, now seems like an excellent time to take a look back at one of its mascot’s two big evolutionary lines, particularly since we now find ourselves in the longest wait ever between 3D Mario games. Today marks the seven year anniversary for the release of Super Mario Odyssey, and with no full new entry in sight, it comfortably beats the roughly six year wait between Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, which should also be good news to anybody who broke a mirror that day.

3D Mario has delighted fans since 1996, maintaining an astonishing level of quality and bringing innovations not just to the 3D platformer genre, but gaming as a whole. Needless to say, it’s a hard task to rank a series where every entry is beloved, but I shall nevertheless undertake this risky venture with my head held high. Wish me luck."

One of the worst marios.. i hated the fact it was only about finding the moons and very repetitive with the same bosses. There is no exploration in this one.
Galaxy 2 is still unmatched

TiredGamer183d ago

I played, completed, and enjoyed Mario Odyssey, but I tend to agree that I don't think it's the best 3D Mario. There was sense of sameness that prevailed after the first couple of worlds... not in the levels, environments, or aesthetics, but in the routine of each world. It just felt like each new environment was just the beginning of another checklist of moons to acquire, and the sheer number of them took away the sense of accomplishment I got from the stars in Mario 64 and the like. I can't exactly put my finger on why that is. Galaxy gets my nod as the best one.

Cacabunga183d ago

I enjoyed it too but i won’t even place it in my top10 mario games.. as you said you are just looking for stars and that irritating music everytime you find one.
Also the bosses are pretty much the same from begging to end. I would have have like some koopalings instead of these dumb useless rabbits

Chocoburger183d ago

I played a little of this game and freakin' LOVED it! But I forced myself to stop because I hadn't played Galaxy 2, which I've been playing every day for the past week. Cripes, Galaxy 2 is way better than I expected it to be! Even though I dislike the Wiimote and nunchuck controls, and it annoyed me a lot with Galaxy 1, part 2 just feels better and slightly less gimmicky when it comes to the controls.

Profchaos183d ago

Sunshine at number 7 no way. I get it's not perfect but it deserves better to date there has not been another 3d Mario that's managed to capture that same movement it's the most acrobatic feeling Mario to date.

It's by and large better than 3d land/world and I'd argue that galaxy 2 didn't offer any trie innovation it was essentially a DLC pack to 1

Personally it's
1) Mario 64
2) Mario Sunshine
3) Mario galaxy
4) Mario Odyssey
5) galaxy 2
6) Bowser fury
7) 3d land/ world.

Super Mario 64 DS: Remakes Done Right

Super Mario 64 DS was offered as a launch title for the Nintendo DS, a remake of the classic platform game with a few original tricks.

Chard361d ago

Not with those D-pad controls

CDbiggen361d ago

Needs more appreciation. I never had an N64 so this was what I played. Sure the Yoshi hat mechanic at first is a slog but you unlock Mario and the others for real and then it takes off. Personally I never had an issue with the controls. Can't forget the mini games and the 4 player rumble over download play.

kevco33361d ago

Indeed, as stated in the article there were tonnes of control options and very much a 'take whatever you like, leave the rest' attitude to most of the game's extras.
