Edge: Muslim Group Condemns LBP "Censorship"

Edge writes: "Last week, Sony delayed one of the biggest games of the year when it recalled Media Molecule-developed LittleBigPlanet on fear that in-game music that contained words from the Koran would incite anger among Muslim gamers.

But M. Zuhdi Jasser, M.D., president of the non-profit American Islamic Forum for Democracy told Edge on Monday, "Muslims cannot benefit from freedom of expression and religion and then turn around and ask that anytime their sensibilities are offended that the freedom of others be restricted.

'The free market allows for expression of disfavor by simply not purchasing a game that may be offensive.'"

Wait a minute, a similar thing had happened with a original Xbox fighting game, I forgot what it was called but the sound track also had verses from the Qur'an and it was recalled after being shipped because of protests from such groups. So in Sonys defense, they were probably trying to avoid a similar situation.

u think u r funny? or trying to stereo type muslims?? do u think al-qaida play video games?? usually those who makes bombing/or violent acts they dont know anything about video game industry!!

so u should apologize for saying comment like "They are scared that someone might start blowing up anything that has to do with Sony"

if sony repect muslims or any other religions it doesnt mean they r scared! and if they r scared then most probably that will be them having to pull out all the games from the market after launch and paying damage by being sued from muslim communities!

so its Money not Bombing u idiot!!

gunnerforlife3746d ago (Edited 3746d ago )

reported as offensive

theKiller: ma men u get a bubble for that

Real Gambler3746d ago (Edited 3746d ago )

Remember Salman Rushdie. In most countries, you can write about anything, and worst case, your book will not sell. But this poor guy has been hiding since then. And here's just a quote from Wikipedia about it:

"Hitoshi Igarashi, the Japanese language translator of the book, was stabbed to death on July 11, 1991; Ettore Capriolo, the Italian language translator, was seriously injured in a stabbing the same month; William Nygaard, the publisher in Norway, barely survived an attempted assassination in Oslo in October 1993, and Aziz Nesin, the Turkish language translator, was the intended target in the events that led to the Sivas massacre, which resulted in the deaths of 37 people."

Sure, Salman pushed the limit (not sure by how much, didn't read the book myself), but do you truly think that all those people deserved that??? It was only a book. Nobody force you to buy/read it. So same goes with the game. Nobody force a muslim to buy it, as this guy is saying. But sure enough, I would not want my name in the generic, just in case...

On the other side, I think this is a song by a fervent muslim? If there's a problem with the lyrics, he would be the first one to know... Sony may be a bit too careful. : )

kindi_boy3745d ago (Edited 3745d ago )

let's imagine's not my intention to be insulting but bare with me i just want to make you see the point.

again let's imagine that people make a game where they call it by your family name... and in that game people can, spit, throw up, jerk off, rape, all your family would you see that ?

(given that it's NOT ok acts by your standards and OK with the people who made the game they use their families sometimes)

suddenly your family said STOP! you are offending us.

now the whole world will say maaan...wth...meh...and do what people are doing now....if it's wasn't for the ....'s we would be playing this game.....why did they have to be whiny i don't get it what's so offending ?! the ...'s should not buy the game if they don't like it....(see how selfish that is?)

do you see the point?

if you are going to make something and it wasn't your intention to insult/offend a group of people you should obey to their rules when you use their beliefs/culture..etc. that's why they called back the copies of the game it wasn't their intention.

again i do NOT mean to insult you i just wanted to clear this out.

LastDance3745d ago (Edited 3745d ago )

freedom of speech.

Have a problem, dont buy it.

Political correctness is a losers game.

If got all the media pulled something that insulted sum1, there would be nothing left okay.

I dont care how offensive it is too muslims, there's a million other things offensive to a million other people that is available to the public.

osamaq3745d ago

@LastDance , if this game is offended you somehow you would not say this, the problem with racist people is they don't feel how much offense and damage when they race, racist people is everywhere, dealing with their mentality is too hard; cause they were raised on race . the game is a gate to all people exactly like a movie so if a movie was racist not too many people will watch it believe me .

LastDance3745d ago (Edited 3745d ago )

im lebanese buddy

Freedom of speech....Okay..not Freedom of speech (within reason) sorry if some members of the muslim community arent use to people doing and saying what they want.....not every1 can be controlled.

JsonHenry3745d ago

Watch out Sony. Groups like these are NEVER happy and seem to think that just because they are offended by you, the infidel, that they have a right to call for your murder.

Glad I don't feel entitled to murder anyone that upsets me because I would have more dead bodies in my basement than you can shake a stick at!

morganfell3745d ago (Edited 3745d ago )

@the killer,

It wasn't a group of Christians that flew planes into buildings. It isn't Hindus constantly blowing themselves up attacking checkpoints or setting off bombs in Bali nightclubs.

It isn't Janists putting declarations of death on people over something they wrote in a book.

Yes there is a vast difference between an Islamic Extremist and an ordinary Muslim but that idea doesn't absolve the fact that extremists are the ones that fly off the handle and threaten death and destruction at any perceived offense. The issue being of course they often carry out such threats regardless of the idiocy in which it is based.

To the people attacking Sony you aren't engaging your brain housing group before your fingers start aimlessly wandering across the keyboard. While I agree freedom of speech should trump all religions and these extremists should just take a jabbing like everyone else (and should be wiped from the face of the earth), the fact is if the edition had gone out unchanged en masse and there had been an attack then everyone would have been pointing the finger at Sony saying they should have known better. Let Sony explain to some widow and child why their husband was killed in a senseless bombing over a song.

Fact: You are attacking Sony when you should be attacking the group with a history of unmitigated and retarded violence over mere words on a page. This moron in the article should be understanding of the idiotic portion of his own faith and more willing to acknowledge the fact they exist. If anything he should apologize for the the stupidity of members of his own faith. He is as shortsighted as some other people are being for attacking Sony. Sony has made plenty of mistakes in the past. This isn't one of them.

These extremists all should burn for an eternity if such a thing existed. Personally I am an atheist. But if they think they are going to meet Allah and score some virgins then they haven't read the Koran. But until Sony get's it's own PMC capable of defending themselves, every Gamestop, Best Buy, etc around the world then raking Sony over the coals for this shows a definite short sightedness on someone's part and that someone isn't Sony.

kopicha3745d ago (Edited 3745d ago )

I dont quite agree with the way you put it. If thats the case. Then everyone in this world should feel offensive with every little thing around them. Take this example, assuming my name is John Wilson. If another person also have an exact same name call John Wilson I should make him change his name since I find it offensive that he have the same name as me. Another example, I dont like your face because I find your face offensive to me, then should you disappear from this world or go for some plastic surgery to change your look? This is one reason why most movies out there usually at start of the movie or probably end of movie they will put in something like names, events, story and blah blah blah are just fictional and it may appear the same in some real world situation but it doesnt meant to be a replicate of the actual thing. Same goes to current situation, even if the song does have a phrase or two thats the same from Quran doesnt mean it replicate the same thing. Its just the same like I mention its not wrong to have 2 different person having the same name. It doesnt mean anything really. I am pretty neutral with this matter. So I aint starting a war or anything with this reply. Neither I am being racist to any religion out there. Just a point of view which I wish to point out.

leyego3745d ago (Edited 3745d ago )

thats the way i thought most muslims would take it. just 2 phrases that just so happen to be in the quran in this song. i mean its one thing to sing a whole story from the quran and another thing completely to take 2 phrases space them out and play them in the background.

thats like saying (can't remember the phrases) u can't say (phrase 1) unless ur reading for the quran. so if i went around saying (phrase 1) randomly in a random sentence i can't? when it comes down to it, the context to different.

theKiller3745d ago (Edited 3745d ago )

i can go on in the other direction too, it isnt mulim countires that invaded europe or any other christian countries now, it isnt muslims that wipe out 100's of thousands of civilians like the crusades did in Jerusalem,it isnt muslims that made mass massacres like atheist did(Hitler), it isnt muslims that killed 5 million women for only one crime that is having a thinking brain and calling them witches like what happened in the midevil time in europe, it isnt muslims that enslaved the africans, it isnt muslims that r invading any country in the world now, it isnt muslims that r destroying the earths atmosphere now, it isnt muslims who made nuclear bombs and used them, it isnt muslims that discriminate women(some arabs/muslims cultures do but its not part of the islamic faith), it isnt muslims that oppressing other countries in the world by using force or economy like what the west do(they r mostly christians), it isnt muslims that made million of people hungry and sucking the money from the poor countries like never happened before in history(capitalism and the western control over almost everything and not giving the chances for others to rise up freely) i could go on if u want.

my point is mistakes happened in all directions and even some extremist muslims wouldnt kill anyone or hate any non muslis person, not all people r the same even among extremist!!
being and extreme is simple by forbidding many extra things around him self but that doesnt mean he/she will fly in airplanes and bomb anything!!

what sony did is pure economy, they could have lost much more if they didnt do what they did!!

So first this guy is one of many complainers that the game is offensive, so Sony does them a favor as well as themselves to avoid lawsuits and issues a this guy is saying he's against what Sony's doing with the whole recall thing? Did I get that right? If so then this guy needs to stop playing danzel is distress...

What did he expect Sony to not recall and remove the "offensive" material from the game so later on his group could file a lawsuit against Sony/Media Molecule and make some $$? Cause seems like what he was scheming in his mind went out the door and now he's just spinning it to where no matter what Sony or MM does, he won't be happy lol...

If I'm wrong with what I just said then could someone clarify for me lol...cause this guy is confusing me with the stuff he's spewing.

ShinMaster3745d ago

He doesn't necessarily agree with the use of Qur'an scriptures on non-educational media such as videogames.

But he does not think it was necessary to recall the game. He says, "First Amendment support freedom of expression, but Mohammed also “defended the rights of his enemies to critique him in any way even if it was offensive to his own Islamic sensibilities or respect for Koranic scripture.”

So he's right. The game should have stayed the away it was. But there are some people who will snap at things like this without knowing their own religion that well.

leyego3745d ago

the way i see it its not offensive at all.
the person who sent sony the email at is fault here by making it sound VERY offensive.

i mean there just 2 random phrases put into a song. its not like he took the whole story and put it in the song. its just 2 phrase spaced out that have to do with death.

Mr_Showtime13746d ago

I feared that LittleBig couldn't make it all the way to the finish line in such glory, I hope that the user who reported it is happy for the absolute pointless controversy started over the game which shouldn't have any at all!

Captain Tuttle3745d ago

He did apologize over at GAF and said that all he wanted was a patch, not to have the game delayed. I saw it here as well, I think.

morganfell3745d ago

A patch would not have voided the screaming of some extremist. Anyone that has had to deal with these pinheads know the offense just isn't that it was sold on the streets but that it was created in the first place. You thought about it and that is an offense enough for you to have to be killed.

Armyless3745d ago

I wonder if Muslime Extremists realize how little anyone ACTUALLY cares about offending them.

gunnerforlife3746d ago (Edited 3746d ago )

muslim here and i am bloody pissed of this happened:/ theres such things as patches these days:/

funny u should ask that lol cuz im one of those people lol im on dial up:'( im gone have 2 wait for ma normal internet to come through lol

yeah they do take it 2 seriously, jst ignore the game if it offends you,us muslims r a bit 2 strict for our own good:/

Real Gambler3746d ago

Believe it or not, there's still people who have a PS3 but no internet. So because of a handful of people who cannot get the patch, they have to do a recall... (Wondering who would buy LBP without internet since a good chunk of the game is getting those levels made by other people and playing online....).

They really take it way too seriously.

wibble3746d ago

Sony is afraid that Sackboy may get a fatwa issued against him.
