Game Freak's Junichi Masuda comments on the Pokemon 2019 Switch title

NE: "In this week’s issue of Famitsu, the magazine will be publishing an interview with Game Freak’s Junichi Masuda. While we don’t have our hands on the full discussion yet as the issue hasn’t gone live, some early quotes have leaked out early. We’ve translated the tidbits thus far."

"It’ll have the same kind of feeling as the previous games on handheld systems"

Well that doesn't sound good for anyone look for a combat overhaul. That's a shame.

I'm going to be honest... GOOD. People tend to think the Pokemon combat system comes down to 4 moves and that's the end of it. In reality, making a Pokemon viable for competitive play is a very long process.

I would much rather a spinoff series with an overhauled combat system (which tbh is what Pokemon Let's GO should have had) than completely changing the core series into something the hardcore fans wouldn't want. IMO what the core series needs more of is things like Contest tournaments to a level of 3rd and 4th gen. For some reason, they've completely scrapped the idea when it had huge potential. Give us more things to do with our Pokemon that aren't just battles.

Honestly at this point tons of pokemon would have so many more options if they got rid of the 4 move syndrome. Maybe add a debuff to each move past 4 in an attempt to put in an overall mastery and efficiency for each move.

"Honestly at this point tons of pokemon would have so many more options if they got rid of the 4 move syndrome."

Which is exactly why its not good. 4 moves means you have to think critically about what move you give each Pokemon in your party. Even then they technically have moved past the 4 move limitation with Z moves which has been welcomed as adding a new layer to competitive play and even brought Pokemon like Dugtrio into the Uber tier.

"Maybe add a debuff to each move past 4 in an attempt to put in an overall mastery and efficiency for each move."

Just sounds overcomplicated. The 4 basic moves limitation works and is competitive. Not much more needs to be said about it.

Yea Pokemon GO looks terribly boring and too simple...like it's made for a 3 year old.

I'll wait for 2019 for a real Pokemon game.

ninsigma90d ago

Honestly I'm just bored of the same old formula. Been playing it since pokemon Red came out and its just gotten stale for me. To me, the series is screaming for a ni no kuni 1 style combat, have it fully rendered in 3D and a large over world with towns being their own entities.

KillZallthebeast90d ago (Edited 90d ago )

4 moves is nifty and all but very limiting. Only a simpleton would argue it should never be changed. I'm not new to pokemon either I swept pvp quiet often and even kept a cloister to stave off lvl 1s

You come off as a smogon player if I am being honest

Based on your logic why even make this game for the switch? Nintendo should continue to make the same old pokemon games. Those games can still be made but Pokemon needs a new take on things. I HATED Pokemon Go I thought that was just an insult to Pokemon and its fan base and really geared towards the casual gamers (which annoy me terribly but what can you do ya know).

I do agree that Pokemon for competitive play is a long process, making Pokemon into a 3d world and allowing your pokemon to walk alongside with you in an open environment is EXACTLY what a franchise like Pokemon needs. Just got to do it right....always the tough part.

I bet I could throw you around online. No legendaries and no hacked mons.

It makes sense to not disrupt the competitive scene

TimelessDbz90d ago

Start fresh and overhaul the combat . Let those who prefer the 4 move pool play previous entry. Look at smash bro's melee players.

Why fix what isn't broken?

BlaqMagiq190d ago

@ninsigma

It's never been boring. It allows for strategic thinking and actually being competitive.
