Every month, Nintendo invites Japanese players to take part in random questionnaires to determine which games they would like to recommend - a slightly different form of user reviews, if you will.
This month's data shows that Hollow Knight came out on top, with players' votes from the month of June all being added up. This list is digital-only and can include any title - not just those that were released last month.

Few Metroidvanias have managed to live up to the potential and promise of Hollow Knight. The bug-themed adventure's excellent combination of world exploration, emotional storytelling, and decisive combat work to create a game like no other. Still, there are some similar games that may scratch that itch before Silksong arrives.
Aferimage is the best like Hollow Knight imo. It’s not even mentioned as most people don’t even know about it. I just beat it , it has a bunch of endings and I loved it. They even have a nod to hollow knight in an item you can get
Great metroidvania type game available on steam if you don't have switch.
Agreed. Such an incredible game.
Very Metroid like in terms of progression where power ups open up new paths but with use of some of the game's optional platforming techniques, you can sequence break like Super Metroid's single wall jump for example or bomb jumping.
Then add in Dark Souls like atmosphere, lack of map (partially), optional bosses, overall length.
And some Dark Souls/Castlevania type combat.
This game is a MASTERPIECE
