Both Carnage can Venom are my favorite antagonist ever. Looking back I wish I followed Spider-Man more closely growing up, but got caught up with Goku and Dante.

Venom isn't a big bad.

Big bads are characters at the top of the ladder pulling all the strings. They are the ones with the master plans of taking over cities or planets.

Venom isn't any of that.

Eddie Brock and the symbiote just both hate Spider-Man and have gone out of their way to kill him. But even that is because they both feel that Spider-Man/Peter Parker wronged them. But other than Spidey, Venom has almost always been an anti-hero. (Eddie Brock Venom anyway.) When he's not fighting Spider-Man he's fighting criminals. He has a weird moral compass and fights crime, but isn't afraid to kill people to stop a villain.

When others have had the symbiote (Mac Gargan aka Scorpion) he was a full on villain. But that was very temporary.

The movie is based off of lethal protector which is when he's an anti hero.

Agent Venom is a hero, most others are either villians but he has helped Spiderman when their interests line up

Venom has had moments of returning to villainy, but usually with a different Host.

Venom is an antagonist to Spiderman. That makes him his villian. An antagonist doesn't always have to be trying to kill him but simply putting complications and obstacles in front of the protagonist to further increase the tension that ultimately pays off in the climax.

Well we know Norman ozborne is mayor sooo.... And Harry ozborne will be in it there's room for a bunch of side quests kraven the hunter was a favorite of developers in the past as was black cat turning up as almost an ally but not quite. There are other side villains they could add.

He's been a pretty big arch nemesis of Spider-Man and besides the Green Goblin he's one of the most popular Spider Man villains.

Especially now with a new Venom movie coming out I would think they would try and promote him more....cause the movie looks terrible.

He hasn't even been a nemesis of his for years. The only time he's been an enemy recently was when he got a new Host. On Brock? Not an enemy. On Flash? Not an enemy. Gargan and that new guy who had him for a bit, sure, and that last bit was against the Symbiote's will.

In fact, the Symbiote itself actually came to like and respect Spider-Man due to the time it spent bonded to Flash Thompson, who was a Spidey fanboy. So there's that.

I'm just saying, there are a lot more actual villains to use without defaulting to the crutch of a bit of characterization that was actually only in comics for maybe about six years at most.

Venom is and always will be most famous for being a Spider Man villain and yes over the years Marvel has tried to do other things with this character.

That still doesn't mean he's not one of the most fearsome or most popular Spider-Man villain.

They're already using crutch characters that from what I remember in comics also moved on like Scorpian, Rhino and Electro, how Venom is an exception doesn't make sense.

It would have been cool to see Insomniacs take on one of the most iconic villains in Spider-Man's history.

Venom is a pretty complex antagonist, and that antagonism is more psychological than fight to the death type stuff. Unless they just make him a brute, he wouldn't make the best bad guy to fight in the game anyhow.

I am not a comic book guy so I don't really know what the deal is with venom, other than the fact that he looks really cool. What I would say, as an 80's kid who grew up with the original cartoon, is that they appear to have plenty of bosses in the game and for me, Green Goblin is the key arch rival, I really hope he turns up.

I am really excited to play this game, everything shown so far has been incredible, Insomniac Games really have outdone themselves which is impressive considering how fantastic their games have been over the years

Venom is actually closer to being Spiderman arch rival tha. Green goblin.

Venom knows who Spiderman is, and because the symbiot was attached to Spiderman it gave Venom most of his powers as well as made him immune to Spiderman Spidey sense.

Both Eddie and Venom have a deep hatred for Spiderman, Eddie for his career ruined by Peter parker and Venom for being rejected by his host.

No. No, Venom is not even remotely closer to being Spider-Man's arch nemesis.

Norman Osborn also knows who Spider-Man is, also developed a means of overcoming his Spider Sense, and the two have many, many layers of mutual hatred: Norman blamed Peter for driving Harry to drugs, for Harry's death, for Harry being made "weak", Norman killed Peter's girlfriend, tried later to kill his wife, made him believe his aunt was dead, and murdered his baby girl.

Norman has also successfully leveraged his status in the city to turn people against Spider-Man, at one point framed him for murder, intentionally antagonized him into attacking him as a camera with no audio was recording, making it seem as if he attacked without provocation.

Norman took Flash, a recovering alcoholic, and poured whiskey down him nonstop, then planted his unconscious form behind the wheel of a truck and rammed it into a gas station. Left Flash a vegetable for years.

Norman has hurt Peter in ways no one else has, or can. Norman has messed with Peter and those closest to him in ways no one else can. Norman is his greatest enemy.

You know I would really consider this a tie, they're both terrific villains and arch-nemesis to Spider-Man. Goblin I see him as a foe that has Spidey running on steam, pushing him to the max with different aspects and extensions of his life with their battle being a little more grand. Venom I see as a foe that is more haunting, an eerie malevolent shadow that pursues Spider-Man and gets him feeling threatened on more intimate level. Both equally entertaining and fun in terms of usage.

@shadow while I don't disagree with your points on norman, the difference I see between them is that had Spiderman not been there, Norman would have still turned into the goblin. VENOM on the other hand only became who he is in the comics because of his relationship with Spiderman. Without Spiderman, Venom wouldn't have most of his abilities.

Villians tend to create a hero when the time is needed, but hero's who create their enemies become arch rivals. Why else would Peter be so adamant about making sure who ever is using the symbiot remove it because he know what it can do and who it can turn people into.

Norman made Spiderman look like a bad guy, the symbiot actually turned Spiderman into an anti hero for a short period of time. Being able to break a hero down and turn him against his core values is a feat only the truest of nemesis can do
