PlayStation Trophies Ruined my Gaming Life

Written by Fredrock - "Gone are the days where I bought a game for the hype or lust for wanting to play it so bad just because it was the next big thing. If the game doesn’t have frequent trophy pops during gameplay I tend to get frustrated because I think that I am not progressing well enough or I am not doing the right things."

A professor in game design that plays crap games for trophies? OK...

Deep-throat2502d ago

LOL

I remember people buying awful music games like Hannah Montana for achievements or trophies or even both. Some of them now hid those games from their profile accounts.

Snookies122502d ago (Edited 2502d ago )

Why hide it? That's a real achievement to those that managed to push through Hannah Montana for a platinum!

aConIsDemocracy2503d ago

Ignore the trophies/Achievements and just enjoy the game. If you want to go for them then go for it but you don't have to. Does anyone think for themselves anymore?

UCForce2503d ago

God of War and HZD are two easiest way to earn platinum.

kneon2502d ago

I don't normally try for trophies, I think I've got less than 20 platinum and most of my games are at around 20-30% of trophies after completing them. But with HZD and GOW I was so close to the platinum when I was done that for HZD it only took 10 minutes more to platinum while GOW was about an hour or so.

rainslacker2502d ago

Sony games tend to not have tough platinums. They tend to be comprehensive to completing the game though. Only exception might be the grounded mode on ND games, but even those can be done if you try and learn to play the game, and occasionally cheese your way through certain sections.

DerekTweed2503d ago

I will not force myself to play a game for achievements. If I'm enjoying the game I will try to get them, sometimes going out of my way to specifically get them but I will not if I don't like the game or even just get bored of it. (Far Cry 5 for example)

Null19802502d ago (Edited 2502d ago )

Not gonna lie, I was in the bathroom on my Vita when I read this article. I'm not one that goes for easy, stupid trophies for no reason.... buuut, I went and purchased "I Am Mayo". Impulse buy.

I'll tell you what, 56 minutes later (yea I didn't get up bc I was determined to finish off the Plat), I came out of the bathroom, my wrist all shaky & sweating. Almost an hour of super fast fapping of the buttons, I got my Plat. (yes, I feel dirty for it. I don't usually stoop to these lows) I can now say this is the stupidest trophy I've ever earned. Only one actually. Every other time, I enjoy the games I Plat.

So glad my wife didn't walk by and ask any questions! XD

ziggurcat2502d ago

Pffft... I did it in less than 45 minutes.

Null19802502d ago

Yea Zig, I like to savor the experience more.

Also, I got stuck for short moments figuring out which ones to tap & for how long. For instance, I lost a good 10 mins tapping the raining cats for the "Feline" trophy, when it ended up being the second leopard bikini instead. Stupid, stupid game, lol

Null19802502d ago

Zig, I didn't realize it was crossbuy. I just did it again on PS4 where you can actually use the touchpad (strangely, you cant use touchscreen on Vita version) and I clocked my Platinum at 29 mins after my first trophy unlocked. I knew exactly how the reward system worked this time around, so no holdups. Could have gone faster if I really wanted to strain my wrists. Shameful, ugh. I already invested though, so had to get my PS4 value out of it too. -__-

Jimneous2502d ago

I tend to go for trophies but not achievements, since the Xbox isn't my main console I haven't spent years building it up so they feel less important.
I have to admit though, that the diamond sound when you get a rare achievement is very satisfying.

LucasRuinedChildhood2502d ago

I don't typically tend to care that much about trophies/achievements. However, badly implemented trophies REALLY irritate me. When you play the whole way through a game and you have less than 10-15% of the trophies, it's hard not to wonder what the hell the developers were thinking. Occasionally when I really like a game then I feel that I'd like to earn a platinum for it (for perspective, I haven't gotten a platinum for 2-3 years now) or just a few more trophies. But then I'll find that the game wants me to perform some heinously boring tasks to get them so I just sigh and move on.

Yes, I play for the relaxing, no more.

Then turn them off. Problem solved 😑

People will blame anything and anyone rather than take responsibility for their own failures...

InKnight7s2502d ago

Its a damn gaming!!!! Grow up get over it.

Iltapalanyymi2502d ago

if you cant play vidya without trophies/achievements then you dont actually like videogames

Chaosdreams2502d ago (Edited 2502d ago )

"If the game doesn’t have frequent trophy pops during gameplay I tend to get frustrated because I think that I am not progressing well enough or I am not doing the right things."

Then change the way you approach video games. Trophies only mark major trials or random 'do this 500 times' at the discretion of the dev team. I certainly hope you don't lose your marbles when dlc is released without trophies...

Achievements are nice to gain, but they shouldn't be why you play a video game.

rainslacker2502d ago

Yeah. If one ever plays just for the trophies, then they've lose sight of why one should play games to begin with. I like going for trophies, but if I'm not enjoying the game, then I'm not going to bother. I don't need a trophy to pop constantly to feel some kind of achievement from them. In fact, the easier ones, I don't really feel anything at all. But I like when I get a platinum for a game I enjoy, and is a good challenge.

Why Dark Souls 2 Deserves a Second Chance in 2025

As difficult and frustrating as it is, people should consider reliving the Dark Souls 2 experience, especially because of what's coming to the game.

Many of those who hate Dark Souls II hate it because it's not Dark Souls. The same people love Dark Souls III because it isn't Dark Souls II.

And so many of the issues at the centre of common complaints about DS2 are present in DS3 and sometimes even DS1. The hatred and bile spewed over this perfectly decent game is ludicrous.

CrimsonWing6912h ago

I don’t think it’s a terrible game, but like a movie sequel by a different director, for me, it does NOT capture any of the “magic” felt from the Miyazaki entries. Boss battles don’t feel epic, environments don’t have the same sense of awe, the enemy variety isn’t particularly interesting, the art direction just feels bland, about the only thing I can give it praise for is some of the music.

Now, again, this is only how I feel about it, so I’m not trying to invalidate his you feel about the game, but it is the worst entry in the series due to those factors and it’s the least re-visited entry, for me.

Is it decent as a game on its own? Sure. But in comparison to the Miyazaki entries, it does not stack up and I believe that’s where many were disappointed with it.

PrimeVinister9h ago

Completely fair. I cannot disagree either, mate.

MrWood11h ago(Edited 11h ago)

You can also play it in VR flawlessly on PC & controller with the LukeRoss mod so… another reason to jump back in with extra immersion.

It’s not a bad game it’s just not as good as the others

Glad they didn't change the art style. This is looking good.. Why did they change the way the characters look anyway? The very first style was kind of ok, it was fine by Risky's Revenge and Pirate's Curse.. both in game sprite and the dialogue popups, why keep changing it? I am not as fussed on her newer look. She's looking kinda too dark or sunburnt now.
