Nier Automata Has 'Fake' HDR On Xbox One That Makes The Game Look Worse

Nier Automata is available now on the Xbox One. It is a great looking game that runs on the Unreal Engine 4 but it is evident after the Xbox One version that this was never developed with HDR in mind.

If they created all of their textures 8 bit, and the game was designed to output 8 bit, then it's a lot more than just flipping the HDR switch on in order to get more out of it. Just like upscaling 1080p to 4K doesn't give you 4K, upscaling content made for 8 bit to HDR isn't going to look much better, and it also comes with the cost of gamma levels getting messed up.

Yep It's why I've been hearing so many players saying it looked really bad. The person on Resetera did good work on finding this. Xbox and Square should be ashamed of themselves for false advertising.

No, it does not have HDR (according to the source). It is like buying an Xbox One only to find out that when you open the box there is an Xbox 360 inside. The output stream metadata going to the TV says it is HDR, but the actual stream is SDR.

Well, I do agree with you in that Xbox probably had little to no knowledge of this so it shouldn’t be put on them. However, now that this has been revealed Xbox has an obligation to remove the false advertising from their site.

No genius, its not false advertising because the game still outputs a 10 bit image it just uses a 8 bit source as the baseline for the HDR signal, which is more of a shitty implementation of HDR than a false one

I'm not sure what fake hdr is. But it sounds like an issue with the metadata not being coded properly to fit within the hdr10 standard, in which case it should be a simple fix, albeit one that should have been seen before release.

Destiny 2 on the PS4 HDR is borked as well, Xbox one the gamma curve is way off and there is no way to turn it off.

Like you said, not really fake HDR, just poor implementation and optimization.

Sometimes HDR in general can sometimes make blacks too black and brights too bright, so for some games I do turn it off. The main thing is to make sure you are running your xbox in 4k mode. (unless on rare occasion that causes a glitch like in gears of war remaster and tera, where it causes flickering when you have your xbox set to 4k but game is only 1080, that case set the video mode to match the game (1080))

Yeah thats pretty damn annoying. Hopefully all that BS is ironed out next gen but who knows? An 8K mid cycle refresh might happen and a whole new set of issues occur. None the less, the game is great and xbox owners need to show interest. Otherwise games like this will be virtually non existent on that platform.

Is it native 4K? This article is about HDR. HDR isn't required for native 4K, as native 4K is a rendering resolution. HDR is just a way to handle the color and appearance of the pixels within that 4K render.

Umm they should have used some sort of filtering like SweetFX. Best combo I use is Reshade/SweetFX, fake HDR on PC looks pretty good. http://sfx.thelazy.net/game... Tons of games can use it.
