Developers Say Twitch is Hurting Single-Player Games

By Alanah Pearce:
"At every video game event I’ve been to for the past six months, including this year’s E3, I’ve asked a wide variety of game developers about the future of single-player games. Even though we’re still getting enormous single-player successes like God of War, it’s undeniably easier to monetize multiplayer experiences, and I think that’s how this fear of the “death of single player games” has shown up in pockets of the gaming community. The notion even goes back to 2011, with Mark Cerny, lead architect of the PlayStation 4, saying: “Right now you sit in your living room and you’re playing a game by yourself – we call it the sp mission or the single-player campaign. In a world with Facebook I just don’t think that’s going to last.”

The story is too old to be commented.

There's no denying that Twitch may be deluding some people thinking watching a game being played out is enough when the point of video games is playing them yourself, but GoW sales still show there's a big market for SP games, and there will always be. Why? Because we saw this happen before when CoD was the threat back them making every other game have tacked on MP and how people got sick of it, or when ubisoft popularized Open world with towers and how everyone is sick of it, including ubisoft themselves.

It is very easy to look at trends and try to get a piece of the pie, but that's the problem (not to mention not every one will become a success). everyone wants to do the same thing. Sony and Nintendo are doing right by sticking to what they do best and let the fad wear off itself.

UltraNova149d ago

Exactly. Who doesn't like to have a SP game to boot up and relax (keyword: relax) after a hard day's work or school or whatever for a couple hrs? Why does it have to be only online where you have to deal with others and their nuances all the time? Who doesn't enjoy immersing themselves into engrossing stories and gameplay from time to time?

Those who support the notion that SP games are dead are living in dilution.

PurpHerbison148d ago

I enjoy single player games, just not the big blockbuster cinematic ones. I'd much rather watch those and often wish they were movies.

rpvenom148d ago

This is extreme I know but that argument is like saying why watch movies when you can play games?

Why watch sports when you can play it?

Why play single player when you can play multiplayer?

There will always be a place for every form of entertainment. Always.

Except curling.. I don't like curling .. and I'm Canadian lol

"Sony and Nintendo are doing right by sticking to what they do best and let the fad wear off itself."

What? Which fad? Multiplayer?

And Yooooo! What is this?! :

“Right now you sit in your living room and you’re playing a game by yourself – we call it the sp mission or the single-player campaign. In a world with Facebook I just don’t think that’s going to last.” - Mark Cerny

"I believe the traditional single-player game experience will be gone in three years.” – Mark Cerny

Lol why am I not seeing all the faux outrage when this guy, the father of the PS4 plainly predicts the end of SP games as we know it?! And then...this guy goes on to make Knack lol.

mkis007149d ago (Edited 149d ago )

Because he was wrong? 7 years later and single player games have only gotten longer! He used the qualifier "traditional" who knows what he was thinking would take over. I'm not so sure he said it as a negative against single-player, but rather as a foreboding that he "fears" singleplayer won't be able to survive in the modern world. I think he would be happy he was wrong in this case.

Septic149d ago

His statement is a far more bleak view on the future and relevance of SP than anything the likes of Spencer have said.

windblowsagain149d ago (Edited 149d ago )

https://www.gamewatcher.com...

Maybe you should link your argument.

That statement was from 2011. lol.

Sp sales were dropping off, that's how things looked. That's why he said the traditional experience.

Again, he has already been proven wrong, as time has shown.

And 'faux' outrage was already shown...back then.

But I see what you tried to do there :)

gangsta_red148d ago

Septic still proves that Cerny was saying the same thing Phil was saying years ago.

And the rise of MP has only gotten stronger and more profitable as almost every company is trying it...even Bethesda the savior of SP gaming.

But of course people like to always point at Phil and say he was the only one who that said SP was dying.

But now the excuses and understanding comes out for Cerny. Goal posts moved again.

ziggurcat148d ago

"Lol why am I not seeing all the faux outrage when this guy, the father of the PS4 plainly predicts the end of SP games as we know it?"

... because it was just a dire prediction, which people make all the time (how many times have we seen "this is the last console generation" predictions? how many idiotic predictions from Pachter have we endured this gen?). he wasn't saying that SP wasn't relevant anymore/that SP lost its relevance... or that the economics were "complicated"... making a prediction is not the same as (basically) saying "there's no money in SP anymore."

Cerny has personally released two single player games since that statement, perhaps that's why there's no alleged "faux outrage." how many 1st party single player games has Spencer supported this gen?

ShadowWolf712148d ago

There's a difference between a hardware guy contracted to build you a console saying that vs the actual head of your games division saying that but you do you, Septic.

If a game offers the complete package (Story, Gameplay, Graphics, Fun Mechanics) it should beg to be played. And God Of War's sales seem to indicate that people have agreed just watching it isn't enough. That combat is delicious.

WilliamSheridan149d ago

It all comes down to of a game is fun to play, or just has a good story. A good story will get views, a great game will get sales...

Veneno148d ago

Sp/ offline games will never go away. That is where the most fresh and creative experiences come from. It makes sense that COD did away with it because you can only do so much with something so grounded as warfare. Each game is different. The industry and gamers alike trying to say that all games should fit a single mold is just ridiculous and not thought out at all.

Same thing goes for the doom and gloom of the end of consoles. Its streaming this, all digital that. Even so you still need HARDWARE to play any kind of game therefore that whole theory/ prediction is complete garbage and people just want to sound like they're so smart.

doughnutsfan148d ago (Edited 148d ago )

here's the thing: sony and N sell consoles, they make games to sell more consoles, their main source of income is not games, it is the consoles, the games are a motivating factor, they are the cherry on top. 3rd party publishers don't make consoles, they make money from games only, this is why they focus on MP bullshit, the trends, bc the trends make money. that said, look at Take-Two and rockstar: perfect synergy of SP and multiplayer content (yes they cancelled GTA V sp dlc but fuck that, have you seen how huge of a game it is?), and they make the most money out of them all, so what EA, Ubisoft et cetera need to do is step their game (pun intended) up. TT CEO even said recently that they have less studios and ppl than Ubi yet they still make more coin and that is laughable, bc yes it is

I just can't comprehend watching a game and not playing it and experiencing it! If Twitch had of been a thing in the 90's I'd just of ignored it like I do now.

MuddyWaters149d ago

Well a game like Detroit I could see myself watching instead of playing, but a game like Ghost of Tsushima I need to play.

firelogic149d ago

Detroit is a game you should play yourself because of the sheer number of outcomes that are possible. You really can tailor it to yourself which you're not going to get by passively watching someone play it.

Prettygoodgamer149d ago (Edited 149d ago )

Detroit is the exact type of game you don't want to watch on stream...... I'm guessing you haven't played them before, the games are a personal experience which you completely negate by watching someone else do it.

149d ago
Hardiman149d ago

Yeah I have to disagree as Detroit is phenomenal and there are so many paths the narrative can take and experiencing it firsthand is definitely the way to go!

mkis007149d ago

Except the point is to make the story your own. If you just watch it you will disagree with choices made by the player...

Prettygoodgamer149d ago

@reaper

"The money could be better spent on a proper game"

A proper game ? How is a game not a proper game ? Detroit become human will be a game my partner and I will talk about for a long time because of the experience, maybe play the game before making yourself look like a complete douchebag.

Aceman18148d ago (Edited 148d ago )

I'd rather play a game like Detroit with many possible story outcome than the same old cookie cutter online shooter games.

For me online competitive shooters are just mindless instant gratification games, single player games give me stories that have a more lasting effects gaming wise.

Online shooters are just bleh to me, the only ones I would play are the coop ones like borderlands.

Single player >>>>>>> multiplayer, but online has its place for those who like it.

Also I find it stupid as hell watching someone play a game when I myself could play it, nvr got the fascination behind watching someone else play.

A game with so much choices and branching paths like Detroit is better to play it yourself and have your own outcome, but whatever you say @messiah^.

outsider1624149d ago

Same. I don't get how people like watching games instead of playing. It's not the same experience. The only time i'd watch gameplays on youtube is as a guide for collectibles usually on 2nd playthrough.

rivaldoo777149d ago

Honestly I admire those people who watch the game from start to finish. I dont have that patience so it's either I beat it and watch my favorite YouTube react to it or never play nor watch.

DarthSocio149d ago

I only watch horror games because I'm too scared to play them

ClanPsi1149d ago

Why not go to your friend's house and watch them play? Surely that's a much better idea.

Bathyj149d ago

But you're brave to admit it.

iNcRiMiNaTi149d ago

I like watching every now and then to see if it's a game I'd really want to play, wait for a sale or avoid completely. It saved me from getting No Man's Sky and Sea of Thieves. I was also pretty skeptical about God Of War but once I saw enough gameplay that satisfied me I went ahead and bought it.

Goldenhawk521149d ago

How are people disagreeing this? Strange, N4G is has some weirdos.

UltraNova149d ago

Probably because he wasn't sold on GOW from the start? Strange I know. Honestly who wasn't? I can understand if you never played a GOW game before but the game play trailers, previews and reviews alone were sufficiently convincing to any experienced gamer who likes a good SP game tbh(MP only and salty xbox/Nintendo fans are obviously excluded).

148d ago
iNcRiMiNaTi148d ago

I wasn't sold on GOW because it didn't look anything like the previous ones so I wanted to see it before I made a purchase. Uncharted 4 was day 1 for me because it looked like an uncharted game, horizon was day 1 because it looked like a good new Ip and it was amaze balls. GOW just looked too different from the others

Rude-ro149d ago

No. Single player games are probably hurting streamers more because people do not want to spoil the game.
The big streamers I saw, all dropped drastically in numbers.. so much, some stopped streaming the game due to loses twitch prime subs.
