Druckmann: There Will Be Quiet Moments in Part II; I Don't Mind Doing 20 or 30 Takes on a Scene

Neil Druckmann confirmed that there will be quiet moments in The Last of Us Part II, too. He also said the developers have the luxury of time while developing the game and he doesn't mind doing 20 or 30 takes on a scene to get it right.

I hope there aren’t a lot of walking scenes. One of my hugest peeves in games are scenes where control is taken away from the player and all they can do is move on forward. Sometimes this can be done well, but in most cases it comes off as annoying if it’s stretched out too long

Smokehouse2140d ago

I agree. The gameplay in the demo looked too good to start doing that again.

darthv722139d ago

"he doesn't mind doing 20 or 30 takes on a scene to get it right."... so how many did it take to get the kiss??

That weird "look at our amazing scenery" thing there they take control of the camera and you can walk forward or stop? Yeah those suck, don't expect them in this game though.

Smokehouse2139d ago (Edited 2139d ago )

The worst was destiny 2 when you get thrown off of the cliff.

“Here, hobble around for 5 minutes so the game writers can portray how hurt you are.”

zeuanimals2139d ago

Uhhh... Definitely do expect them. This happened in the first game and it's necessary if they wanna convey stuff like getting stabbed through your liver and bleeding out. Or if they just wanna pace something right. People want control cause it's a game, but it's always weird when characters are saying something really serious and the player's just bunny hopping around acting like a moron. It ruins the immersion completely. Sometimes devs have to take player input away during certain sequences to avoid this.

RememberThe3572139d ago

Can't disagree with that at all. I just expect them to make it more context oriented. The way GoW was able to do it in certain section, then in others where Kratos would tell Atreus they'd have to talk later. It was really slick the way GoW did the in game dialog and I expect the same sort of approach with TLOU2.

bluefox7552139d ago

If done right, the walking scenes build atmosphere and develop the characters, TLoU did it great, and more recently, God of War.

SCW19822139d ago

Agreed and all thought there were too many of these situations in Uncharted 4 the one where you are on the lift with Elena was masterclass.

Silly gameAr2139d ago

Yeah, that part in God of War where Kratos was going back home was beautiful and impactful. It was very well done

nucky642139d ago

agreed. that desert scene in UC3 where it seems like you walk forever - not fun.

TimelessDbz2139d ago

God of war does that all the time.

manabyte772139d ago (Edited 2139d ago )

It’s a linear narrative driven game. I can’t wait for these moments when I can just take in the beautiful scenery and admire the world I’m in. I suspect those moments will be few and far between anyway as Druckman has stated he wants players to feel constant tension and can be attacked at any time.

DialgaMarine2139d ago

To each his own. Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed the calm moments in TLoU where you just walked around, taking in the environment in between big action sequences. Really helped set the tone and provide an emotional understanding into the post apocalyptic world. It was saddening, yet beautiful.

UnHoly_One2139d ago

Based on the up and down votes, a ridiculous percentage of people on here like to just walk in their games while listening to the characters talking.

I'm not one of those.

I love a good story but there are far better ways to tell it than long drawn out walks with conversation. I hate that crap.

That's actually the deciding factor that has turned me away from most Sony games the last few years. That seems to be their new favorite thing.

P_Bomb2139d ago (Edited 2139d ago )

If you’ve pre-emptively turned away from most of them, how would you even know they do that?

Would love to know what people who boycott walking play. Like, when ya haven’t killed something in 30sec, do ppl start spazzing and run straight to reddit? What does that feel like? To have the attention span of a goldfish?

Bathyj2139d ago

Im thinking TLoU2 will have that giraffe moment, I just hope it feels organic, not like, oh we chucked this in because we had to have a giraffe moment.

Flewid6382139d ago

Didn't hurt God of War one bit

rainslacker2139d ago

I don't mind if it's short, like around a minute. But if it's really long then it gets tedious.

Okay that's good so in future ppl could complain I'll use these article to back up why it's all good.

ccgr2140d ago

Impressed with their attention to detail!

BondJames2140d ago

I buy TLOU for PS3 and later for PS4 one of the best games i ever played but i probably wont buy Tlou 2

FunAndGun2140d ago

lol, well that sucks for you then.

yeahright22139d ago

I think he's expecting someone to ask why. Probably didn't count on no one caring too much.

Sweetbrandigirl2140d ago (Edited 2140d ago )

Thats Your Loss ! Because its going to be better then the first I can already tell ! The graphics are better the combat if tigher and the AI is smarter !!! Yep I'm going to play the shit our of this game just like I did part one !!!!

hulk_bash19872139d ago

You say TLOU is one of the best games you ever played. But you wont be getting Part II, which looks like it'll be even better? That's some sound logic right there man. Oh well, your loss.

RainbowBrite2139d ago (Edited 2139d ago )

Well you know, I will certainly buy it, but contrary to my fellow n4g commentators I think what you say does make perfect sense.
My favorite game last gen was Dark Souls, But DkS2 and 3 were such a disappointment. And they were great games in itself, but for me, they kind of like spoiled the round perfection of the first game's lore.
So yeah, if that's the case with you here - and that might very well be the case with a game that has such an strong story element - maybe you shouldn't buy part 2, I don't know, is for you to decide.

manabyte772139d ago

Yes you will. You’ll bitch and moan now but buy the game day one at release.

BondJames2139d ago

No i will boycott ND like i boycotting Star wars.

Dizzy115232139d ago

Me neither. I'm probably done with ND at this point. The Next Tomb Raider is where it's at.

SCW19822139d ago

Ha ha ha ha just made my day.

FunAndGun2139d ago

I heard there is sjw in Tomb Raider...so you might have to pick a different game again, lol. Don't want your head exploding on day 1.

hulk_bash19872139d ago (Edited 2139d ago )

You do realize it was revealed that Ellie has been gay since before the start of the first game right? Ellie has always been a strong and mature character for her age. She is a survivor, who Joel relied on constantly to watch his back. They wouldn't have survived if they didnt have each other. This has nothing to do with an SJW agenda just for the sake of pandering. ND has created an amazing character in Ellie, who is intense, brutal, funny and vulnerable. The first game was a masterpiece not in spite of Ellie but because of her. If that is lost on you simple because you can't get past playing as a young gay woman, then it's your loss.
