Naughty Dog is Not Phased By Outraged Critics - The Last of Us Part II at E3 2018

"Naughty Dog was met with a lot of criticism after its second trailer for The Last of Us Part II debuted during Paris Games Week last year. The trailer featured some intense and graphic moments of characters brutally fighting each other to stay alive. Needless to say, it didn't sit right with a lot of people. While I'm not going to dive deep into which side of that argument is correct, there is one thing that's for sure, internet outra ge will not affect Naughty Dog's vision for The Last of Us Part II." -- PlayStation Enthusiast

Exactly right. You guys have delivered time and time again. We do not not need some kid "Septic" saying otherwise, with opinions.. But unfortunately i will be passing this game up, even though i know it will be quality.

SuperSonic912555d ago

Its the lesbian kissing that made me uncomfortable

ravinash2555d ago

Watching the guy pull his toe nail off in death stranding made me feel uncomfortable, but i'm still going to get it.

Gaming_1st2555d ago (Edited 2555d ago )

It's about what they are projecting. And unfortunately, me and mid aged guy's will not support this as we have in the past. So i'm sure it will do strong numbers amongst for the 30 and below, cause they give 2 craps about society. But i am almost possible it will drop off.

P.S. Btw this is my opinion, i'm sure some people will not agree with me. But discuss your opinion to change my mind.

"And unfortunately, me and mid aged guy's will not support this as we have in the past. So i'm sure it will do strong numbers amongst for the 30 and below, cause they give 2 craps about society. "

And who elected you to represent "mid aged guys"? I'm over 40. You don't speak for me, pal. Stop pretending you do. And it is hilarious that you believe that anyone who buys this game doesn't "give 2 craps about society." It is a damn video game. Also hilarious that you just generalized an entire age group of people. Yeah....you are so damn wise. lol

"But i am almost possible it will drop off."

lol....what?

RauLeCreuset2555d ago

"P.S. Btw this is my opinion, i'm sure some people will not agree with me. But discuss your opinion to change my mind."

Not every uneducated thought someone lacks the discipline to keep to themselves is deserving of debate.

FPS_D3TH2555d ago (Edited 2555d ago )

Lmfao you don’t speak for all middle age men buddy. Most of us aren’t as close minded and let a lesbian kiss get in the way of enjoying a game. This toxic gaming community might not but thankfully the rest of the modern world and society do give two craps about enjoying quality games, story and a wider variety of characters. People crying about subliminal and political messages in their games should take a second to see who exactly is making their games and why it should be no surprise that characters like Ellie or women in BFV are in games today. It’s a hard fact to swallow for the ignorant spinfoil hat wearing crowd of this page who are upset games aren’t just made by white males anymore but it’s just telling of how little some of these gamers are actually going outside.

ravinash2555d ago

I'm 42 and I've got no problem with it.

morganfell2555d ago

"If 2 women kissing makes you uncomfortable you might need help"

Why was my thought how to become the meat in that sandwich and other people are having meltdowns?

Regarding the violence this made me feel so good. Its what I have always said about TLOU MP here and elsewhere. It is the most brutal and personal killing in Multiplayer gaming and its roots are born in the Single Player campaign.

2555d ago
soulrebel2555d ago

@Gaming_1st if you think all 'mid-aged guys' are as archaic as you are then you're wrong. Most of us are proud of the progress society is making. That's right; acceptance is progress. You must hate the direction all media is heading if you are uncomfortable with the lesbian scene in the Last of Us. Society will continue to mature to celebrate individuals having their own say what is right for them, so long as those values don't harm anyone else.

I'm afraid that if you're hoping for acceptance to 'drop off' as you put it, you're in for a disappointment.

XabiDaChosenOne2555d ago

I'm not too happy about the lesbian kissing either but I'm still going to get the game but I completely understand why someone would not because of that.

KickSpinFilter2554d ago (Edited 2554d ago )

"Once you hit your 40's you will understand"
Yes you will. As a cardholder member of the 40's age group we don't care how other people live their life.
Perhaps I did in my teenage years, but not anymore. It's much more accurate that intimate relations of polygons is what is uncomfortable, such as the one that takes place in GOW3, that one is extremely uncomfortable. The one in TLOU2 is done very well, but still is uncomfortable not because of it's LGB but due to it being polygons.

As far as TLOU2 goes you might be missing out one of the best games this generation if not all time.
I have experienced it all from the impossibility of controlling something on your TV with Sears Pong to the hopeful challenger to topple the best game I have ever played TLOU. If what we saw in that TLOU2 gameplay trailer comes to fruition with the best animation transitions/combat/environment s/story I have ever seen in gaming. I'm also pretty sure it will be the fastest selling PS4 game that will easily clear what the original PS3/4 has sold. You will be truly missing out in a "Gaming_1st" masterpiece. But much like I don't care what LGB do nor do I care if you play said game. I personally would not miss out on such a game.

bloop2554d ago

@Gaming_1st: I'm 38 and I'll be getting this day one. I don't see anything wrong with adult men wanting to play a game with adult themes and content. In fact, it's the other way around for me. I have an older brother that only plays Nintendo games, Mario being his favourite, and has no interest in anything rated mature/18. That to me is weird. Maybe I should hook you two guys up and you can play some Mario kart and stay in your own fairy land together??

darthv722554d ago

I'm 45 and it doesnt really bother me all that much. I have been playing games since pong as well and i can say that over this last decade there has been a shift of acceptance in gaming like there has been in real life. Maybe more so in gaming because real life if someone doesnt accept things then violence erupts and real people get injured or worse. In a game, it is just a game but even games are getting more real. Some call it the uncanny valley and as games become more about art imitating life then i can see how it can turn some people off.

On a side note, if this game had not shown the kissing and just left that for the player to see themselves on their own time then this prob would not have been an issue. The violence and story is what sets the game apart, not the sexual tone so that to me felt forced when it didnt have to be there. They could just as easily had the same quality trailer and left some things for people to uncover on their own. the game isnt about Ellie on her journey of discovering what kind of sexual preference she wants.... its about survival and kicking ass in the process. (that scene is most likely a memory or flashback)

Parasyte2554d ago

Let me guess, you also think being gay is a choice?

JokerBoy4222554d ago

@SuperSonic91 it did seem a little forced. Even Ellie made an uncomfortable face at first. If that were a straight kiss scene liberals would've screamed rape.

kreate2554d ago

I'm mid aged. And I'm not uncomfortable.

CryofSilence2554d ago

Too many homophobes in this world.

Cobra9512554d ago

I'm quite a bit older than all the above given ages, and I actually enjoy two attractive women doing all sorts of things to each other. Anyone remember the old Doublemint commercials? "Double your pleasure, double your fun." It's sausage parties that I'm too old to stomach.

yeahright22554d ago

@gaming_1st. the irony of your username....

Kombatologist2554d ago (Edited 2554d ago )

What are they projecting that's so bad exactly? And what middle-aged guys do you speak of? I turn 38 this year and I am absolutely stoked about this game. I'm also a straight male and not offended by two girls kissing -- or two guys for that matter. Love is love. Get with the times, man.

I think people are focusing on the wrong thing. When the first TLoU2 trailer dropped, there was a lot of speculation that Joel is actually dead (hence Ellie's behavior) and just a figment of Ellie's imagination. But this new trailer raises even more questions. This apparent relationship between Ellie and the other girl may have some significance to the story.

I, for one, can't wait to see how it all plays out.

Muzikguy2554d ago (Edited 2554d ago )

I’m 34 and have no problem with it. It’s one of my most anticipated games. I’m amazed at how you can sum up all “mid aged guys” with your opinion. Granted I know a lot that don’t like change or can’t see far from the front of their own noses, but the world is much bigger than that and always has been.

cell9892554d ago

I’m 33 and I get where you’re coming from. I just don’t like it when they push agendas on my video games. Yes Ellie can be gay, I have no problem with that. But I much rather not see lesbians kissing, same as I’ve never liked sex scenes in my video games. Does it really add to the story? And if so, is it really the only way to tell the story?

Anyway, I’ll be getting the game but my opinion stands.

Aceman182554d ago

@gaming

I'm 45 this year, and I could give two craps if there's chicks kissing in this or for that fact any game. I'll be buying this game day one because I love ND games.

Thatgrammar2554d ago (Edited 2554d ago )

What are they projecting? Please tell me why you are “passing this game up”.

Muzikguy2554d ago

@Cell

I can agree with the sex in games. I don't see the point in it either. I wouldn't put kissing in the same category as sex though. They're not remotely close

As for all these comments I'm sitting back laughing a bit because I don't think I've ever seen so many people say their ages before in a response to someone else. :)

NeckBone2554d ago

Sirk7x2554d ago

If they manage to tell a good and compelling story, should it matter how old you are? It's not like it's My Little Pony or something lol.

Thatgrammar2554d ago

@darthv72

You actually don’t know what the game is about if you think its about, “survival and kicking ass in the process.” The first game was not about survival and kicking ass in the process and tlou2 will most likely not be about survival and kicking ass in the process. If you have played and/or listened to what the developers had to say about the first game you would know its about the characters and their relationship as it progresses through the game as they survive a post apocolyptic world. If the second game is about ellie then why not include her new relationships? Whether they be romantic or not, whats wrong with relationships?
I personally really liked the scene of ellie kissing that person she developed a relationship with and thought it was heart warming.

Homunculus2554d ago

I dont mind lesbian action, but those girls two are quite ugly. Its not designed to be pleasant for men too.

Gaming1012554d ago

You haven't articulated in the least as to why you are passing the game up, so what exactly are people going to address to change your mind? Try giving some rationale, because so far people are just guessing based on your dumb, narcissistic comments.

starchild2554d ago

I agree. They should make the games they want to make. People are free to voice their concerns or criticisms, but really there's no point to being super negative on game forums. It's best to contact those companies/studios directly. Likewise, the studios are free to make changes based on those criticisms or simply ignore them. And each individual can choose to buy those games or not.

Nicknasty2554d ago

Yea, with their fat wallets! Money talks im afraid. I'm a long time Sony fan and i love most of their exclusives, but I'm sorry TLOU 1 was overrated and boring to me and this one looks even worse!

They are just trying to jump on board the bandwagon and make there little political statement. So original! Looking way more forward to Nioh 2 and Death Stranding. You guys can keep your overrated naughty dog titles. Uncharted was a copycat poor mans version of tomb raider too. Some of us long time Sony fans don't have to love every Sony exclusive, or have to agree with an opinion being made either.

Theres plenty of people out there that will disagree with you, so don't get so offended and mad. We can all have our opinions and shouldn't make us any less of a human being.

phoenixwing2554d ago

you lost all credibility when you say uncharted was a poor mans tomb raider.

snoopgg2554d ago

Its the tombraider series that is overated in my opinion.

starchild2554d ago

Uncharted borrowed things from Tomb Raider and then Tomb Raider borrowed things from Uncharted. They are both outstanding franchises, imo.

Slickrickda12554d ago

It's funny how you say tlou was boring and uncharted was overrated considering that your not a fan of neither it's just interesting how you put so much emphasis on why you didn't like the games but continue to buy their games. I have no problem with your opinion but, when you give it it sounds like your asking for people to respond back to you like you want the attention because all your doing is agitating people enough to go in on you. One thing to give your opinion but nobody needs you to be salty.. If you don't like the games then don't buy them.. That saves time

But nah .... rather lay off staff & re-remasters Days Gone i.e Days Gone Reloaded.

Cacabunga1d 1h ago (Edited 1d 1h ago )

Stubborn Sony not wanting to listen to fans is paying the price of its arrogance. They could have let these studios grow and do what they do best and let others like Bungie maybe make gaas for those who want it.

Days Gone 2 is obviously what they should focus on next. We’ve had enough remasters and reeditions of the first one

Profchaos1d 1h ago

Sony's not paying the price its workers are.

z2g22h ago

They were listening to the money that games like Fortnite were pulling in. Market research shows service games when successful make more money. It’s a gamble that Sony was too cocky to worry about. Now ppl are losing their jobs in an economy that’s gonna slow down any minute.

gerbintosh13h ago

@Profchaos

The workers let go were probably hired for the live service game and released now because it was cancelled

jznrpg1d ago

People needed to buy the first game! And not at 20$

neutralgamer199222h ago

I understand the argument that if fans truly wanted a sequel to Days Gone, they should've supported it at launch at full price. But that perspective misses a lot of important context.

First of all, Days Gone launched in a broken state. It needed several patches just to become stable and playable. For many gamers, paying $60 for something clearly unfinished just wasn’t justifiable. That wasn’t a lack of support—it was a fair response to a product that didn’t meet expectations out of the gate.

Despite that, over 8 million people eventually bought the game. It built a strong, passionate fanbase—proof that the game had value and potential once it was properly patched. A sequel would’ve had a much stronger foundation: a team that had learned from the first game, a loyal audience, and way more hype around a continued story.

But Days Gone also had to contend with another challenge—it was unfairly judged against other first-party PlayStation exclusives. Critics compared it directly to polished, masterful experiences like Uncharted, The Last of Us, and God of War. And while those comparisons might make sense from a branding perspective, they didn’t reflect the reality of the situation.

Studios like Naughty Dog and Santa Monica Studio had years—sometimes decades—of experience working with big teams and high budgets on flagship titles. Days Gone was Sony Bend Studio’s first major AAA console release in a very long time—their last being Syphon Filter back in the PS1 era. Before that, they were mostly focused on handheld games. Expecting them to match the output of the most elite studios in the industry, right out of the gate, was unrealistic and frankly unfair.

The harsh critical reception didn’t reflect the potential Days Gone actually had, and it probably played a big role in Sony's decision not to greenlight a sequel. Instead, they pushed Bend and other talented studios like Bluepoint toward live service projects—chasing trends instead of trusting the kinds of games their fans consistently show up for. Many of those live service games have since been canceled, likely wasting hundreds of millions of dollars and valuable time that could’ve gone toward meaningful single-player experiences.

So when people say, “You should’ve bought Days Gone at launch if you wanted a sequel,” they’re ignoring the bigger picture. Gamers didn’t reject the game—they waited for it to be worth their time. And once it was, they absolutely showed up. That should’ve been seen as a foundation to build on, not a reason to walk away from the franchise

InUrFoxHole11h ago

@neutralgamer1992
Has a point. I supported this game day 1. There was either and audio sync issue or a cut scene issue that ruined the game for me early on. I dont blame gamers at all for holding off until it meets their standard.

raWfodog23h ago

I seriously wonder who makes these types of decisions. Days Gone was a solid game. It didn't get that much love at first but people eventually saw the diamond in the rough. The ending basically guaranteed a sequel, but someone said "nope, let's pitch a LS game instead". And the yes-men were all "Great idea, sir!!"

Urgh. Jim Ryan’s sh***y GaaS plans still ripple across their studios even today.

Such a shame, they should have just been allowed to make Days Gone 2.

Sony need to truly let go of their live service plans once and for all.

OMNlPOTENT1d 1h ago

Agreed. I think the live service era is dead. Even titans like Destiny are starting to fall apart. Sony needs to shift their focus back to their single player games.

ABizzel11d ago (Edited 1d ago )

I don’t think the GaaS overall was a bad idea they’ve seen the success of others, however, forcing all your studios to focus on it was absolutely insane.

Those kind of games are backed by hundreds if not thousands over 1,000 developers working on those games year-round even after release for continuous new content monthly, quarterly, and huge annual or bi-annual updates. It was stupid to expect taking your single-player focused studios and have them become GaaS focused studios when many of them have skipped Multi-player modes the entire last generation (a stepping stone into GaaS).

He was after his Fortnite, Apex, etc… and I feel they could have found that by building a singular new studio dedicated to helping developers like Naughty Dog bring Faction 2.0 to life. At most they should have had:

Factions 2.0 GaaS (PlayStation’s Open World Survival)
Destiny 3 (Bungie needs to revamp Destiny)
Horizon GaaS (PlayStation’s Monster Hunter)
A new AAA IP

That’s it. I mean technically Gran Turismo is a GaaS so that could count, and an Open World InFamous meets DC Universe Online could work with custom hero / villain classes.

raWfodog23h ago(Edited 23h ago)

"I don’t think the GaaS overall was a bad idea they’ve seen the success of others, however, forcing all your studios to focus on it was absolutely insane."

What's more interesting is that SIE was not actually 'forcing' their studios to make GaaS games. I have to find the article again but it was explained that these studios knew about Jim's plans for GaaS games and typically pitched those types of games to SIE because they would have a better chance of getting greenlit for production. They were chasing dollars instead of their ideal games.

Edit: I found the article. Take it for what it is, lol

-Foxtrot21h ago

They didn't have a choice lets be honest, a new boss comes in and lays out all these plans....what are any of them going to do? Pitch a single player game with none of the things that guy is asking for? You're just asking to be given less funding, less notice, less resources and the like. or maybe you're scared incase the guy decides to get rid of you for someone who will actually give him things that he wants.

They didn't get brutally forced but they had no choice but to go with the flow or Jim would find someone who would.

raWfodog14h ago(Edited 14h ago)

@Foxtrot
No, they definitely had a choice but many chose the path of least resistance.

We have plenty of single-player, non-LS games that began development during the LS initiative. Those projects obviously got greenlit for production. These studios just needed to have good ideas for single player games, but most just chose to come up with half-assed LS pitches.
