One Year Later, Did Microsoft Keep Its E3 2017 Promises?

E3 fast approaches, and you know what that means: New game announcements and all the gaming news you can handle are headed our way. It also means it’s time to rewind to 2017, when the three console makers made a plethora of promises during last year’s E3 festivities. Did they keep them? Let’s find out. First up: Microsoft.

ArchangelMike2571d ago

To be fair to Microsoft, they can't really be held to account if a developer is not on schedule and have to delay a game. This is no bad thing, as hopefully the game is only going to get better. Better delaying a game than releasing a broken buggy mess.

But give credit where credit is due, Microsoft kept most of their E3 2017 promise, they ones that were up to them anyway. I wonder what they'll be promising this year though?

darthv722571d ago (Edited 2571d ago )

MS did much better in sticking to what it showed more so than previously over promising and under delivering.

IamTylerDurden12571d ago (Edited 2571d ago )

People should be asking if Microsoft has delivered since E3 last year. They really have not. The ongoing criticism for Xbox has been lack of quality exclusives and weak first party infrastructure. Has that dramatically improved? I'd say no. When was the last good AAA exclusive? Forza? People also want quality new AAA IPs. They want this generations Gears, a Horizon, Bloodborne, or something of that ilk. Microsoft needs to announce some new IPs like Death Stranding, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone. They need to announce some huge new IPs or they may go an entire generation without having a new, quality AAA IP.

darthv722571d ago (Edited 2571d ago )

@tyler, your concerns are noted however that is not the basis for this piece. So in sticking to the subject matter... MS has done better this past year in following through on what they showed more so than previous events.

Nothing more nothing less.

If you want to critique them on the lack of new content of their shows then go write a piece and submit it for people to discuss on.

Gazondaily2571d ago

The big promise was the power of the X. We've seen how decisively that machine has outperformed it's nearest competitor.

@darth

Absolutely. They've done well to keep their promises but now that the hardware is firing on all cylid ers they need to make some new promises or plans for the software problem that has lingered on for so long.

TFJWM2570d ago

It is easy to deliver when you don't promise much...

Alucard_4202570d ago

Maybe they did a better job, but is that what you want as fans??? Come on they can do better then what they are doing, it is still pretty bad.

DigitalRaptor2570d ago (Edited 2570d ago )

@ Septic

Microsoft promised a console that had "no boundaries", "no limitations" and "no compromises": https://www.youtube.com/wat...

They also promised that it would be the only console to deliver "high-fidelity VR":
https://gamerant.com/xbox-s...

I suppose neither of these exactly relate to E3 2017, but we've since found out that neither are true.

dumahim2571d ago

And as someone in the comments pointed out, it goes both ways. MS shouldn't get credit because the dev/publisher delivered the game on time.

NeoGamer2322571d ago

Really to assess whether MS delivered its promises or not they should've removed all third party and independent stuff from the discussion.

monkey6022571d ago

They mostly kept their promises but in hindsight those promises were weak and unimpressive to begin with. They promised a ton of multiplatform support and got it. They also launched a new iteration console with impressive specs and absolutely no true dedicated software support. I still can't believe they didn't have a single exclusive to really showcase the Xbox one X at launch. Nevermind 6 months later.

I expect much more of them this year because I refuse to believe they've just been sitting on their thumbs all this time watching their brand turn to crap

Jinger2571d ago (Edited 2571d ago )

Honestly they need to show a first party IP that really flexes the X's power if they are going to keep touting the "Most powerful console in the world" bit. Hardware is great, but let's see something that looks better than God of War if it's really so much stronger than the Pro. GoW on the Pro is breathe taking at times, Sony Devs can code like wizards.

Obviously their big flagship titles like Halo or Gears should be the ones that are going to flex the X. Forza Horizon developed for the X should be damn beautiful this year also, but if the studio doesn't have the talent... it's still going to fall behind a Sony studio that has the talent even though the X has more power.

monkey6022571d ago

I honestly respect that they aren't exclusively developing for the X1X. I think that would be poor form but that doesn't mean they can't have a game that they primarily focus developing with the X1X specs in mind. Something to truly stand out from the crowd. As it is the X has no software to really dignify the purchase.
Then again they are doing little development at all.
You could nearly skip the Xbox this gen in its entirety and miss little.
Sony has been going from strength to strength this gen but we actually need Microsoft at Sonys heels or they'll become complacent again and we all lose out

AgeInTheCage2571d ago

I love these power of the X comments by Xbox one s owner, lets not look at the glass half full now, sure xbox x is the strongest console currently out, but lets not forget that the xboxone s is the weakest console out also. SO for the 2% that own the mighty 500.00 X good for you, to you s owners i shake my head.

Poor xbox one s owners having to boast about the X like its some kind of special machine when it has ZERO exclusives taking advantage of it.

IamTylerDurden12571d ago (Edited 2571d ago )

Mike

Microsoft just released back to back unfinished games though. Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2 were rushed out the door. Sea of Thieves lacks content, has no enemy variety, and a broken Kraken. State of Decay 2 just released as an unpolished mess. These were half baked games that needed more time in the oven. They literally did release unfinished and buggy broken games just recently.

darthv722571d ago

Your comment would be accurate if it was not for the release of recent content for SoT as well as a big 20gb patch for SoD2 that improves things. Other than that you are right... MS did release unfinished games.

Aceman182571d ago

Only thing they delivered was a powerful console, and the same old forza game. Any 3rd games was up to those devs/pubs to deliver on time.

So for me no they did not deliver on what I wanted, hence no repurchasing of an X1 console.

DerekTweed2570d ago

They may not have delivered on what you wanted, but they didn't say that they would.

dreue2570d ago

Tell me the reason for even try to defend ms? Sorry but ms and xbkx told the players in the face this:i dont care what you want, give me the money and i will give you the finger...

DerekTweed2570d ago

What about the Xbox fans that only wanted Forza?

I know a lot of people that only play forza, not even Horizon. The real Forza. They got what they want and they are happy.

Different people want different things, don't assume to speak for everyone.

waste of time article..

Click bait title promise?

Yes, they delivered on a full click bait article.

Codedan2571d ago

Why does N4G approve articles that just create a fanboy war?

Johnyra2571d ago

Maybe people like the fanboy war, i don't know i always liked all consoles.

rpvenom2571d ago

I wouldn't put the onus on N4G. They simply approve articles that are game related.

Fanboy wars are started by the fans.. Some enjoy it, some don't.. It's the way of the internet.. And in many ways.. why we even go to comment sections to begin with.. Personally I always love a good debate.. some dont.. It's just good ol' fun sometimes and comedic.. but it does get toxic from time to time don't get me wrong.. but that's the internet for ya.

darthv722571d ago (Edited 2571d ago )

Not really a waste of time as it is basically a recap of last E3 and whether or not what was shown had come to fruition. There is one about Sony as well and tomorrow there will be one about Nintendo.

You arent obligated to read them but certainly you could have a bit more understanding of what these are which are recaps. Perhaps "promise" might have not been the right choice of words since they never once said "we promise...." but I can see where you would think that is a click bait word. Overall though I would say they upheld what they showed for the most part.

rainslacker2571d ago

It's just a review of what MS showed last year, and if they delivered those promises in the time they said they would. These come out every year, and all the console makers will get one.

I didn't read the article, because I don't really care that much, but unless they were disingenuous about analyzing the facts, it's not actually clickbait...just a analytical article posing an analytical question.

sreevenkat2571d ago

After this E3 we can decide whether MS will do according to their promises done in the previous E3 or not.

trooper_2571d ago

They didn't uphold anything. It's the same old 'where are the exclusives' crap because they haven't been delivering.

Codedan2571d ago

Please elaborate what they didn’t uphold? Do you think games can be made in less then a year, 2 years?

Cmv382571d ago

Crackdown has been in development for much longer than 2 years.

showtimefolks2571d ago

Code

Crackdown
Phantom dust
Scale bound
Closing fable studio

They have no issues releasing forza every year

trooper_2571d ago (Edited 2571d ago )

And this is why Microsoft gets away with crap.

This isn't about 'two years'. It's about getting people to buy your freaking console in the first place.

IamTylerDurden12571d ago

The director of the original Silent Hill: “I look forward to seeing bold interpretations.”

Keiichiro Toyama—the creator and original director of the 1999 Silent Hill—shared his personal thoughts on the recently announced remake by Konami, reflecting on what the project means to him after more than two decades:
“I felt something similar when the game was adapted into a movie. It deeply moved me to see the names of the characters and locations I had created come to life visually, even though I wasn’t directly involved. That wouldn’t have been possible without the continued support of the fans and the dedication of the developers who’ve kept the series alive.
I’m really looking forward to seeing how the remake evolves this time. With the advanced technology we now have, I’m sure I’ll be surprised by how the game is reimagined. Since the original was built for the first PlayStation, there will naturally be challenges—like the camera and controls—but I’m eager to see bold and creative solutions to those elements.”

AMD CEO Shares Vision Behind Xbox Partnership and Next-Gen Chip Roadmap

AMD is really building hype around their unique partnership with Microsoft to help and build an advanced and seamless Xbox ecosystem across all Xbox consoles and devices.

I wonder what she meant by "full roadmap of gaming optimized chips" though? Seems ambitious.

Next year´s Xbox Showcase already looks promising and exciting. Here´s hoping they deliver.

InUrFoxHole23h ago

They had best show 3yrs in a row. Heading for another

VenomUK16h ago

Obscure_Observer said “I wonder what she meant by "full roadmap of gaming optimised chips" though? Seems ambitious.” To me, I interpret this to mean rather than having a couple of X/S products for launch and a handheld there is a longer term plan to release new products with higher specs at timed intervals. I’m speculating of course, but this could mean a spec bump every year or two, so that even if the PS6 or Steam Deck Home is released a year after ‘Xbox’ Microsoft can release an updated model that has a higher spec.

Agent756h ago

But Microsoft forgot the games.

KwietStorm_BLM11h ago

It's X3D chips for console. Everyone knows this. And it's been rumored in the PS6 forever.

Ganif9h ago

Correct.

"Sony's PlayStation 6 reportedly will feature an AMD semi-custom APU with a Zen 5 CPU and UDNA GPU, capable of 4K 120FPS and 8K 60FPS gaming. The console will include X3D cache and advanced AI upscaling technology."

Obscure_Observer6h ago

"It's X3D chips for console. Everyone knows this. And it's been rumored in the PS6 forever."

I doubt that AMD´s CEO would waste her time making this huge and important partnership announcement over a tech that will be 7 years old by the those next gen consoles will be released.

Notellin5h ago

You should have just lead this comment with the fact that you have zero understanding of technology in the consoles and instead have a Toms Hardware online forum level of education.

"I’m speculating of course, but this could mean a spec bump every year or two, so that even if the PS6 or Steam Deck Home is released a year after ‘Xbox’ Microsoft can release an updated model that has a higher spec."

Very interesting theory. Still not sure how MS would actually make it work.

"I doubt that AMD´s CEO would waste her time making this huge and important partnership announcement over a tech that will be 7 years old by the those next gen consoles will be released."

Some odd, deliberate wording, no branding, not 'Xbox consoles, Xbox handhelds' specifically, feels and sounds like they're building towards hardware that anyone can be used or licensed to/by themselves and other manufacturers.

Multiplatform software and hardware 'Xbox/AMD APU'.

Obscure_Observer1d 4h ago

I guess you missed Sarah Bond´s next generation Xbox announcement this week, were she clearly states:

"I´m thrilled to share that we´ve established a strategic multi-year partnership with AMD to co-engineer silicon across a portfolio of devices, including, *our* next generation *Xbox consoles*."

But hey, I don´t think you´re entirely wrong, maybe MS will build their own Xbox consoles while licencing other manufactures to build and sell their own Xbox branded consoles. Who knows

Lightning7723h ago

Probably because the next xbox isn't ready to release yet?

The marketing and rumors seem to be heavy out of no where. The rumor was a 27 release but it maybe it could be 26 new console launch instead.

Who knows.

Eonjay11h ago

There PR is alrways super heavy handed. No one is acutally buying an Xbox as is.
Also it is very early to be talking so much about a next gen console.

Obscure_Observer5h ago

There´s a lot of people interested on Xbox Next and its ability to run games from major stores like Steam.

We know that the PS6 is just around the corner as well, but so far, no news on what it might improve over the PS5 or PS5 Pro.

However, Sony already made public that their priority and actual focus is the PS6. So its not "very early" to talk about next gen when the very console manufactures are talking about it.

Sony PS5 Era Profits Soar Past $13 Billion, Outpacing All Prior PlayStation Generations

Sony’s PS5 era has generated over $13 billion in profits, surpassing the combined earnings of PS1–PS4, with $136 billion in sales.

Their recent Playstation revenue is also more than Xbox and Switch combined, obviously in large part due to 3rd party sales.

Christopher1d 20h ago

I mean, if Sony is keeping third parties happy, kind of feels like a winning method.

GamingExplained10122h ago

I mean they have to, since they have 2 exclusives anyone cared about this generation, and those are now on PC. The rest is this creatively bankrupt string of remakes and remasters, taking advantage of the creativity of developers past efforts, and laying off teams creative side since all that work has been done already by previous teams.

By far the least creative generation ever.

lukasmain20h ago

@ Gaming-NEW-Troll account

"those are now on PC"

In that case. Xbox is Playstation's competition. MS have ZERO exclusives. ZERO. Nothing. Nada. Not a single exclusive.

Playstation has Astrobot. Demon's Souls, Astrobot Playroom, Gran Turismo 7, still not going to PC. They got Death Stranding 2 coming out in 3 days, NOT ON PC. Ghost of Yotei, not on PC.

That is 6 real exclusives MORE than Microsoft. Microsoft's Xbox is Playstation's competition. So lets compare.

I mean you brought it up.

Or does being "creatively bankrupt" not count when you have certain console exclusives going to PC years after they were released? In that case Returnal. Ratchet And Clank. Spiderman. Miles Morales. Silent Hill 2. And the list goes on

IRetrouk1d 16h ago

Kinda always been that way if you look at previous gens, exclusives are important but they aint the main revenue generator.

Reaper22_1d 15h ago (Edited 1d 15h ago )

People are generally paid for the work they are doing. Layoffs generally occur when there is no work for them to do (project cancelled, business slowing down, etc). I’ve been laid off from two jobs during my 40+ years of working so I know about these things. And this is why the game output for ps5 has been a tad slower…

1) they needed to be… games take longer to develop, and they’d burn out their teams trying to maintain the same pace as ps3.

2) they can afford to… games cost more than ever to push boundaries, so Sony had to figure out a way to match Xbox’s clever profit strategies in order to afford to continue to innovate and take risks.

At first the narrative was Microsoft isn't going to make the money back from the ABK deal to now their profits wouldn't be as high if they didn't get the deal. This very topic is part of the reason why the deal was secured. Sony's dishonesty and reluctance to tell the truth about how much money they're making and lying about how much this deal would hurt their business. That strategy failed. They're are making a lot of money. No doubt about it and its good for the industry but don't get butthurt when Microsoft post their profits and you guys see they are also making a lot of money as well.

Reaper22_1d 14h ago

MatrixxGT1d 13h ago

Closing studios, layoffs, leadership changes, PS plus increases, multiple game cancellations and delays, total flops like concord. Slowest release of first party games of any generation and they just shut down PS stars I guess because it was costing to much.
Yet they announce record profits…..the greed here is insane, MS and Nintendo too. All of them milking gamers and we just keep lapping it up like a blood hound for a meal.
Them tariffs are really hitting them hard I see.

Deathdeliverer1d 13h ago

Well a part of running a business is a tight grip on that P&L sheet. In project management. It’s a known fact that the farther into a project you go, the more costly the corrections. Having something reach the definition of done, the end of the road, and it’s hated is a monumental loss of money. As games are usually made iteratively it’s like how was this not caught and course corrected several times before this point. Sony is definitely known as trusting and allows teams to make the games they want to make. They “trust the process”. The caveat to that big budget and freedom is if it bombs, especially if it’s your first game, you’re outta there. They have shareholders/stakeholders to keep happy. Where as normally a done game like Concord would give ROI as it was out in the wild. The cost of the project is recouped and turned into profit or delivered whatever value they wanted. If the game is now NOT coming out, how do they get that money back and stay profitable? By not paying wages for that team over a course of time that would have still been on payroll working on the next potential bomb, DLC for a dead game, and essentially costing more money.
It sadly isn’t greed, it’s business. They release these great profits because 1) it’s enticing for more stakeholders to invest, and 2) Despite failures they are still balancing the books and turning record setting profits.
How many live service games died at various stages of development? They are still this profitable? Imagine if the games came out and were hits to add onto the profits?

Christopher1d 6h ago (Edited 1d 6h ago )

So, you're saying that over $10B of this is from $10 to $20 software price increases? Zero to do with increased market reach? Massive MTX from third-party games?
