A new video of Shadow of the Tomb Raider showcases how the team is aiming for realism in visual effects, using real-world physical formulas.
Sometimes it's the little things that make a game more immersive!
100%, it elevates the gameplay experience to different heights.
Agreed! The little things help fill out the whole so much more. I always love looking for the little details that a lot of devs leave out. Stuff like Self shadowing, footprints, decal effects, wind simulation etc. Looking forward to this game.
Day 1 for me. This summers gunna be expensive! I'll have to pre-order this, Spiderman, and Yakuza Kiwami before my Bestbuy Gamers Club discount lapses.
Same here bro, one of the best franchises available today. Same level of quality as uncharted IMO.
Perhaps the next one, we'll have to wait and see, but certainly not the previous release. I played Uncharted 4, Uncharted Lost Legacy and then Rise of the Tomb Raider back to back to back and the quality difference was obvious. I'm not talking graphically, when it come to the animations, voice acting, story, dialog etc. it just didn't hold up to Uncharted level of quality. It was a different kind of game though with the crafting and exploration so that was a plus for TR.
No multiplat game will ever play, look better than a game made exclusively for a console be it xbox or ps4.
@AgeInTheCage That's isn't true. There are plenty of multiplats I've played that looked better than some PS4 or XB1 exclusives. I would agree that exclusives tend to look better than multiplats on average, but only on average. There are plenty of games (like The Witcher 3, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Star Wars Battlefront 2, Battlefield 1, etc.) that look better than quite a number of exclusives.
@kneon I kno what you mean. The only thing I like more about Tomb Raider was the bow. I have a weakness for bows. Lol
I don't need any of those... I have SoT. 😏
Somehow someway I lost interest in this franchise...I dont know exactly why... maybe its because we do not need two Uncharteds? They should have stuck with TR's platforming and exploration.
I've owned all the mainline Uncharted games as well as the excellent Lost Legacy. I've always found the Tomb Raider games to be more gritty and immersive. Lara getting impaled when making a platforming error still makes me cringe. I've always appreciated the skill system and hefty side content of Tomb Raider games as well. Uncharted has better visuals, writing, and supporting cast...but Tomb Raider has the deeper gameplay(skill system, weapon upgrades etc.), better protagonist (IMO), better enemy variety (animals etc.), and mature themes. I can't objectively say that one is better than the other, but each franchise excels in different areas that other doesn't.
I cant fault your argument but the me too syndrome is just too much to pretend its not there. That said, I have to acknowledge the fact that I'm seeing this through the lens of a PS gamer whete the Uncharted series is exclusive so Xbox and PC gamers are good with the recent TR games, so thats that.
Uncharted = Action > survival TR: = Survival > Action The end
The protagonist (at least this new Lara) is very one-dimensional, unlike Drake. The older Lara was a FAR more interesting character. The only area I agree with you on is the deeper game-play. Otherwise, Uncharted beats the newest Tomb Raiders in all other features. That said, if this new one can feel more Tomb Raider 2013, I'll be a happy guy!
I can agree on enemy variety but the gunplay is more tight in U4 than ROTTR. Having skill perks don't make the gameplay better. It has to do with the the tight gameplay mechanics. TR didn't even had a shoulder shift so that was very uncomfortable to name a few.
I like both but where I find Uncharted to be better in terms of production values I've always ended up having more fun with the Tomb Raider games, 100%-ing both of them.
Agreed. I remember a time where some mockingly called Uncharted a "Tomb Raider Clone". Now, in an ironic twist of fate, this franchise is trying to be "the clone", so to speak. Tomb Raider lost its identity, imo. Shame too. Imagine what can be done with its classic formula with this generation's hardware.
Not only is TR the unoriginal game, Uncharted has become far superior in every regard.
They differentiate themselves well enough for both to stick around imo. I think the biggest problem with the reboot TR games has been the narratives, which have been very poor. With a change in writers since the 2nd game, hopefully the story will be improved in this one.
I just bought the Rise game and I played about 2 hours or so. It's very hard to not compare them to the Uncharted games because holy shit they are so damn similar. Unfortunately for Tomb Raider it just feels so generic and lazy compared to the Uncharted games. Naughty Dog really knows how to polish the hell out of their games. The Tomb Raider games aren't bad though, just feel B grade. Like a poor man's Uncharted if you will.
The platforming and climbing that we see in TR today has been present in the franchise since the PS2 days and before Uncharted ever existed.
I agree. And most of the changes to the modern Tomb Raider games would have occurred whether Uncharted existed or not. Modern sensibilities and technology are what have influenced the recent Tomb Raider games more than anything. Tomb Raider has always been about exploration, fighting, puzzle solving, platforming and cinematic presentation.
Yeah, they made it automated (dumbed down) way before Uncharted. I'm not sure what those PS fanboys are talking about.
I'm with you. I long for the older Tomb Raider style with newer mechanics. The reboot's gritty tone and soulless character has ruined the franchise for me. Eidos do some great development work with the above video working as an example. I remember light work and Laras hair being impressive in "rise" but the game is just joyless. Almost like Crytek and a Crysis situation
I just got interested in the franchise after the reboot :3
Sorry. Feel this series does just about everything better than Uncharted did. Gunplay is better. World traversal is better. Weapon and equipment upgrades. World is more open to exploration. Did they steal the formula of Uncharted during the reboot? Sure. Did they improve upon it? Of course.
No, nope ,noooo...
I find them to be quite different experiences thematically. Uncharted is a light-hearted adventure with a with witty characters. Tomb Raider is almost a survival sim (At least for the first half of the game. The second half is.... lame). I honestly wish Eidos would go all in with the survival aspect, with hunger and sh*t playing a role.
Day one definitely
They need to concentrate on having a story that's worth a darn. I'm going to wait for a sale. I have to many games I want in September.
I wanna know if this game's controls and animations are gonna be as clunky as the last game.
I don't know what game you played but the last two Tomb Raider games controlled very well and the animations looked outstanding.
The first game played fine for me. I enjoyed the 2nd game but it felt heavy and clunky.
I remember having to slog my way through TR 2013, and it took me over a year to finally finish it because it was one of the most boring and poorly executed games I’ve ever played. I still decided to give Rise a chance when it finally came to PS4, and I’m only a few hours in after almost 2 years of owning it because i found it even more boring and dry than 2013. Maybe I’ll finish it someday, but I can’t for the life of me being myself to feel any hype about this one.
Funny you say that, I just made myself sit down and finish Rise. There are some things Rise does really well, and there are also a lot of things that just feels flat. It's very pretty and well made but it's also kind of clunky and the characters kind of suck. I'm interested in the new game but only to see if they've tightened things up.
Great characters and character development are one of the main aspects that sets Naughty Dog games apart from the crowd.
Rise of the Tomb Raider was the most fun in had on PS4 last year next to Mirror's Edge: Catalyst
Hopefully it's better than the second game
I am going to do my best to get through this one with stealth as opposed to murdering 500 people.
These games are well made from a gameplay standpoint (though I had issue with their cover system), and their puzzles are nice. I had to push myself through the last game though because the storytelling just didn't captivate me. I could give two licks about any of their characters. The story itself was fine. I guess Naughty Dog's games, having played the Uncharted series first, show me what a game like this can be (from a storytelling and character perspective). They definitely do a cool job with the gameplay elements in these Tomb Raider games, and I know, I know, it's a game, that should be forefront. But for me, someone who's played a ton of games, I'll take an amazingly told story with characters to care for (while having fun) any day over cool mechanics and effects.
I cant wait for this game to come out, really enjoyed the last two series.
GOD OF WAR has details in spades. As do all Sony exclusives. Uncharted games push every detail.
Certainly some great tech going on within this engine, roll on E3
The cover art is really nice.
I just want to run around as Lara(how she is supposed to look), in Temples, watching out for traps. And duel weilding pistols, killing Cougars and other beasts.
Water effects! The thing I love most in games. Day One buy
I guess you must've really enjoyed sailing your ship in Sea of Thieves
Cool story. Really showed off all the effects there /s
Already have PTO requested for this one. Bring me the TOMBS!
This looks really neat. Cool video
Tomb raider on a par with uncharted? It is for me 👍 can't wait!!
Rise started damn near like Among Thieves!! Lmfao!! I like the game to be honest. Uncharted destroys on scale, character, playability. Both are awesome tho.
The only ones excited are the xboxone players because its slim pickings over there, they will be zooming this game on pause x1000, bragging about how great it looks on a console that 2% have all while the xboxone s looks the worst of all the consoles. Regardless tomb raider has had its time and its all starting to get boring. No buy for me.
Feel this series does just about everything better than Uncharted did. Gunplay is better. World traversal is better. Weapon and equipment upgrades. World is more open to exploration. Did they steal the formula of Uncharted during the reboot? Sure. Did they improve upon it? Of course.
Well said mate. 👍
The Tomb Raider reboot has done some very interesting things like crafting and a more open world design but Uncharted 4 did beat it in most categories. It would benefit Crystal Dynamics to hire some good writers because the by the end of Rise of the Tomb Raider the story much like the first game was pretty forgettable.
Will pick it up cheap and not finish it like the last two games.
6 months from now on, look how the tomb raider devs downgraded the graphics. Same story different day
But is the game going to be worth $60? I thought the 1st game was good. Part 2 not so much. Then they added the outfits. I can already see their greedy a$$3$ plotting ways to keep people paying into it. I aint gonn lie, God of War spoiled myself and many others. They easily couldve monetized that game but didnt. We'll see what happens but im reading metacritic reviews before i get it. If i even get it.
Oil is pretty neat. Fire is disappointing, since Uncharted 2 did it an entire console generation ago and ND's both looks better and spreads realistically.
It will look good, but it will play the same as every other AAA game. I can feel the tedium from the gameplay videos alone.
