Written by Nathan O'Grady - It has been a LONG time since edgy, 90s-style platformers have really made an impact on me. The last, perhaps, was Conker, back in the days of the original Xbox. Those days, I think I enjoyed the game both for its quality and for the fact that if my parents had fully understood what it was then I probably wouldn’t have been playing it. Rad Rodgers, developed by Slipgate Studios and published by THQ Nordic, feels different. Now, it seems I have a new-found appreciation for a platforming title that has the kahunas to say what it thinks and do what it wants. That line in itself describes exactly what Rad Rodgers is all about.
Can Slipgate Studios successfully resurrect the classic retro side-scrolling platformer with Rad Rodgers?
I get the impression this hasn't sold too well on consoles, which is a shame. It's far better than most modern run and gun platformers.
Neil writes: "Rad Rodgers tells the story of young Rad as he gets whisked into a strange retro world with Dusty, his trusty old games console. Now, Rad most certainly plays too many video games and this world plays on the fact that us gamers are a strange lot. With the foul mouthed, super lewd Dusty egging Rad on every step of the way, helping out with a power slam and edge grab when he can, this is a game that will very quickly bring a smile to the face of any mid-90s gaming freak."
Mick Fraser: "Rad Rodgers is one of those games whose attempts to be self-aware fall flat because it’s so, so gamey. It pokes fun at 90s games and is even set in the 90s, but fails to feel at all modern in any way other than the graphics, which look far too modern for the setting, if you get me."
