Final Fantasy VII surpassed Half-Life and Call of Duty to secure one of four new slots in the World Video Game Hall of Fame. Other inductees include Tomb Raider, Spacewar!, and John Madden Football.
Tomb Raider over half Life? ... speaking of "resting on one's laurels". The new TR is dull and generic as fuck. The criteria is a joke, to say the least... Influence: The game +++has exerted significant influence on the design and development of other games+++?!!!, on other forms of entertainment, or on popular culture and society in general. +++A game may be inducted on the basis of this criterion without necessarily having met all of the first three. +++ ...this has to be a joke. TR has not influenced Jack shit, at least not in the gaming World. No other female protagonist came to life after her stardom. Tomb raider is a decent to mediocre franchise, that got pushed thanks to the media ... ffs iirc some band made even a music video with cgi Lara Cruft. That's how silly the situation was surrounding dumb breeder. The contemporary Lora creft has the IQ and charme of a lightbulb .. has influenced others... The audacity!!! Half life on the other hand did have an impact .. and unlike TR its sequel improved every aspect of the original and is considered an all-time best egoshooter. There are franchises that have accomplished more than Laura Cruft ever will. Franchises that have fromed/started new genres and have sold more copies than Lora Craft.
I agree with you to a point. Half life was definitely a bigger game in video game history. Tomb raider the original was horrible. It just launched at a time when nothing else was like it. Nostalgia can't fix the broken controls. The 2 newer games weren't bad but they weren't ground breaking either. I enjoyed playing both of them. It also launched at a time when her boobs were talked about more than the game. I give you that if it wasn't a woman nobody would have remembered the original.
Tomb Raider has a far wider reach in society than Half-Life, tbh. You ask a random Joe on the street who the Tomb Raider is, they'll probably know. Ask them about Half-Life, the odds of them knowing what you're on about goes down significantly. And for every person who saw Laura Croft as a sex symbol, there is another who saw Laura as an inspiration. Alicia Vikander, half the dev team behind the reboot, and hundreds of thousands of others, both in the gaming industry and outside of it. If you don't get it, I don't think I could explain it. The WHOF was looking at games that had a greater impact on society, and Half-Life just can't claim the same reach. Sure, within the gaming community he it is a force to be reckoned with, but outside that circle its influence drops off significantly.
I'd pick ff7 over half life, but I certainly wouldn't put tomb raider ahead of half life.
Hate final fantasy 😠 lol
