Nintendo expects Switch to sell just as many units in two years than Xbox One has in close to four and a half years

FallenAngel1984179d ago

Nintendo expects Switch to ship more in its first two years than what PlayStation 4 sold in its two years, which was 35.90 million.

mikeslemonade179d ago (Edited 179d ago )

And the xbox will be at like 42 or 43 million units sold, so the switch isn't even gonna catch the xbox before this generation is over. Switch is not even a current gen system. It's still half a generation behind the xbox.

And remember the switch will not have a better year than year 1 because they blew a big load on Zelda and Mario already.

MVGeneral178d ago

So far the switch is losing steam.
And besides shipped vs sold is different.

fonger08178d ago

@MVGeneral if though this probably been said 80 billion times but when manufacturers accounce shipped, it means sold. They have zero way of actually counting individual units sold per retailer.

FallenAngel1984179d ago (Edited 179d ago )

According to this article Switch has shipped 17.79 units in a year and one month. That puts it in the similar range that PS4 had sold in its first year and one month, which was 18.5 million. Very impressive but more importantly...

HOLY CRAP Switch software sales are through the roof!

Super Mario Odyssey – 10.41 million
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 9.22 million
Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 8.48 million
Splatoon 2 – 6.02 million
1-2 Switch – 2.29 million
ARMS – 1.85 million
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – 1.31 million
Kirby Star Allies – 1.26 million

1.) In less than half a year Super Mario Odyssey is already on its way to outselling Super Mario Galaxy to become the best selling 3D Mario game of all time.

2.) In less than a year on the market Mario Kart 8 on Switch has already outsold the Wii U version, especially when the Switch version had no bundle to prop up sales numbers like the Wii U version did.

3.) In exactly one year The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has become the best selling title in the entire franchise, regardless if you add in the numbers from the Wii U version.

4.) Splatoon 2 has already outsold its predecessor and further cemented the IP has one of Nintendo’s most prominent recent IP.

5.) Still can’t believe freaking ARMS is still a more commercially successful game than Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite.

6.) Xenoblade sure has moved up from being a title that needed a fan campaign to get localized to becoming a B-tier franchise for Nintendo. It’s moving on up.

7.) Kirby Star Allies has to be the fastest selling game in the series. It’s further proof that most of Nintendo’s franchises will find huge success when they release on the NS.

I for one can’t wait until Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze rereleases on NS so the game can get the huge sales the series has always gotten in the past. It sold alright on Wii U, but a huge far cry from what is expected of the huge series.

“Incidentally, we also learn that Tatsumi Kimishima is retiring from his role as President and Representative Director, and Shuntaro Furukawa (who is currently in charge of the Global Marketing Department) will take over in his stead.”

You did your part Kimishima. You may have been Nintendo’s president for the shortest period of time in their history, but you were in charge at its most trying of times and for that I commend you. Now all eyes will rest on Furukawa and how he’ll handle leadership.

I'm glad someone else noticed the software sales. It's insane. Pretty much every game they've launched is on track to become the best selling in its respective series. (Maybe not Mario Kart 8 Deluxe since they'll probably put out Mario Kart 9 in a couple years). I mean, Nintendo's first party software sales are generally strong, but Switch software is selling above and beyond what Nintendo software usually manages.

Imagine when software like Mario Kart 9, Pokemon, Smash Brothers, or 2D Mario launches. We're going to see 30+ million like we did back in the Wii days.

EDIT: And here's the attach rates
Odyssey: 58.5%
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: 51.8%
BOTW: 47.7%
Splatoon 2: 33.8%
1-2-Switch: 12.9%
Arms: 10.4%
Xenoblade 7.4%
Kirby: 7.1%

This is part of the reason why I don't ever see Nintendo going 3rd party as people want Nintendo games. For me no other game games close to mario kart in terms of attachment rate and sales. Mk8 Wii and all before that sold very well no matter the console sales and I can't think of any other IP that has done the same and for so long.

I love the switch and yes it could of had more power could of been xyz but at the end of the day Nintendo have done nothing but an amazing job recovering from the wiiu sales.

kevnb179d ago (Edited 179d ago )

and that is without a second Christmas season yet. Imagine if pokemon comes out this year?

davand114179d ago

If Pokemon comes out, the Switch is going to be impossible to find at the end of the year.

Imalwaysright179d ago

I don't find it surprising. Nintendo's 1st party is the strongest of the big 3 by a wide margin. They completely dominate the list of best selling games of all time

Moonman179d ago

ARMS is fantastic and feels great to control. I was surprised how much I love it! Would love to see Spring Man in Smash Bros!!!! I'm a fan. Get ready to add so many more games to that list in 2018!! The sales are about to go up across the board with 20 million+ more systems added to the Switch family in 2018. I think Nintendo is being safe and humble with their prediction especially if Pokemon releases. ;p

Madmoose179d ago

Yeah, ARMS is much more of a treat than I anticipated. I purchased it, but then put it down for a bit fairly quickly. Then picked it back up just to give it a go & realized how much I had been missing. It blew my mind how much I was doing so. And with the added fighters (like Dr. Coyle) it just kept getting sooo much better. Would certainly love to see a character or 2 in Smash Bros..

davand114179d ago

Having the console be a hybrid has done great things for the software sales. Always having access to your games where ever you are makes it easier to buy games on a whim. It's great for the smaller indie titles too.

Interesting they're only predicting 20 million before next March. IMO that's either a conservative estimate or they're not expecting to get Pokemon out before the holidays. Pokemon and Smash are both bigger franchises (commercially) than 3D Mario and especially Legend of Zelda and the Switch hit almost 18 million this past year even with shortages. If they truly had Smash and Pokemon this year prior to the holidays the console would be flying off the shelves.

The 10th Rider179d ago

Thought, just to be clear, it could just be that they're still not 100% sure on the release date. Also the current president has largely stuck to safe predictions rather than overestimating. If the Q2 meeting rolls around in October and Pokemon has a set release date I imagine they will just up their expectations.

DJK1NG_Gaming179d ago

yet Pokemon is listed as 2018 or later.
It's coming on this year. Pokemon will be their holiday surprise.

Smash Bros. is there Nintendo Online Service showcase game so September.

Segata179d ago

Remember their original est for Switch was 10 million first year. Then they moved that up to 16 million. So They start off conservative.

Prince_TFK179d ago

Their first few predictions were spot on (some even exceeding their expectations). The Switch has been a major success so far.

Automatic79179d ago

Impressive, congratulations Nintendo. Proud owner of the Switch on it's one year anniversary. Can't wait to introduce myself to Donkey King after almost 15 years.

MrBrofist179d ago

Have it on Wii U trust me when I tell you it's fantastic.
One of the best platformer games this gen
