Why weren’t you committed to making Sonic Forces the best it could be?

I'm pretty sure he was. I don't know many developers who don't want to make good games. Commitment does not guarantee success, so the snark isn't exactly justified.

Incidentally, he's been Sega Games CEO only since 2015 (way after Sonic Forces had entered development), and Sega Sammy's CEO only since last year. It takes time to make radical changes in the philosophy of a company with 7,000 employees, even if you're the boss.

Yet Sonic Forces didn't seem to learn a damn thing from the past failures...they just tried to take Sonic Generations and pump steroids into it thinking they'd have another win from it but it blew up in their face.

I mean who the hell asked for character creation? Most of us are sick to death of new characters to begin with and this game shoves in as many as they could.

Sonic becomes a werewolf, Sonic gets a magic sword, Sonic gets some alien friends, Sonic gets the Flame of on. Meanwhile fans "Urm...think we could get Sonic Adventure 3 please?"

Sonic Mania was only decent because it felt it was a fan made love fest that didn't have much involvement from SEGA themselves.

In the end if they were so committed they'd have learnt from their past mistakes but they didn't

Translation of the above: "Game development is easy, and if it was me everything would be so much better. Incidentally, since I don't care for something, "most of us" don't."

That's not how it works, you know?

Although I did enjoy Sonic Forces, I’m disappointed how Sonic Team spent their longest time developing a game and it didn’t pay off in quality that blew its predecessors out of the water.

Sonic Team doesn’t even work on a lot of other IPs like they used to. Being the premiere developer at Sega, they need better management. Even a bunch of freelance developers upstaged them.

Sega itself could should also work harder to have more commercially successful IPs on the western market.

Good article - I definitely like the CEO's plans for the future, I hope Sega gets back to the way it used to be.
That said I like a lot of what they've been doing recently
- Sonic Mania and the Yakuza series have been excellent,
- there's a new Sonic Racing game, Fist of the North Star and Valkyria Chronicles 4 on the way,
- Shenmue and Panzer Dragoon Orta have come back,
- Arcade games like Daytona, Border Break, House of the Dead Scarlet Dawn and Storm Racer G look great and I hope they get released on all home platforms.
Looking forward to seeing what they have at E3.
