E3 2018 Is Make-Or-Break For Microsoft And The Xbox One

Andrew from Xbox Enthusiast thinks that everything will be riding on this E3 for Microsoft. While the company has been making plenty of great decisions for the platform, the lack of New IPs and prominent exclusives are hurting the Xbox ecosystem. If Microsoft doesn't knock it out of the park with this year's conference, there could be trouble brewing for the Xbox One.

Abash2631d ago

No, no, no.... you fail to comprehend that the 6th E3 of the Xbox One will be THE one to turn the tide

GottaBjimmyb2631d ago (Edited 2631d ago )

I actually disagree, I think 2017 was their make or break year, they didn't "make" IMO and frankly I think there is really no way they make headspace in the market at this point and 2018 is just a matter of if they want to even remain relevant. Hopefully this E3 is great, but if it isn't, or relies SOLELY on Halo 6, I would be a bit concerned frankly.

Vectrexer2631d ago

Take your Kool-Aid glasses off and take the sludge out of your ears because they deliver them what they said they're going to deliver on true 4K gaming! Free backwards compatibility not limited compatibility on games you have to rebuy!
This place is soiled with Fanboy trolls!

WilliamSheridan2631d ago

I love MS but this is definitely an important E3 for them. They need to ride the positive momentum they've been building with the X and everything moving forward. If they break the momentum it could really hurt going forward.

johndoe112112631d ago

@Vectrexer

Are you SERIOUS???? Are you boasting about playing last gen games on your current gen system? Is this what the fanbase has been reduced to? No wonder microsoft isn't even trying, when all you need to do is make people pay for a new $500 system to play old gen games. That has to be one of the most insane comments I have ever read. What the hell is gaming turning into?

MegamanXXX2631d ago (Edited 2631d ago )

I remember an article saying this last year

bigmalky2631d ago

The thing is, it doesn't matter what they say... They could tell fans that the ultimate single player and multiplayer experiences are coming at Christmas, along with a special boost to make the One S a true 4K machine with the promise of every game from every previous MS console supported...

Half of it will be lies, a quarter of it half truths and the rest will be up to whether they change their mind a few months down the line.

MS always try to set a good tone at E3, but have rarely delivered.

But... Believe the hype! That's what you lot always do.

rainslacker2631d ago

MS needs to not worry about the fans and if they're happy, but rather worry about impressing the larger console market base that is available to sell to.

Every company will always have it's fans to hype up their PR and marketing. But that hasn't worked for MS this gen, and it's not going to help them going into next gen because not everyone is blindly devout.

bigmalky2631d ago (Edited 2631d ago )

Indeed, but the majority of the console market base has already decided that Microsoft is likely not for them... I'm not surprised after the terrible start to the generation, the lies about incoming exclusives year after year, their "vision of the future", and cancellation of promising projects.

It's going to be very hard for a gamer that actively enjoys Sony and Nintendo's offerings to think "I really need an Xbox One too", this far on into the generation.

There will be doubts for next gen too, if MS don't start watching the other company's successes and how they are achieving them.

notachance2631d ago

anyone want to bet how quick they ditch the "we won't show games early" once they have an actual game to show?

dumahim2631d ago

Watch them say "Best Xbox games lineup ever" again.

TheCommentator2631d ago (Edited 2631d ago )

If this is headline is true though, why do I hear the same thing every year? MS "could be in trouble" since the XB1 launched and they're still successful. SoT is doing well in spite of the reviews and sparse content too.

Only thing I agree with is that MS needs to mean what they said when they told us they, "were focusing on games once the 1x released." MS will never compete with Sony unless they have more choices and diversity and they do need to come out swinging.

rainslacker2631d ago

We hear it every year, yet Xbox is in its worst state in its entire history. They still have their devout fans peddling everything they do as being the most awesome thing ever, but the different between the excitement for games between Xbox and PS is pretty jarring.

I just have a hard time believing that a fan base that spent over a decade extolling how Gears and Halo, along with Fable and Forza being the pinnacle of gaming, are now content with nothing but the B-Roll games which were used to fill out those heavy hitters. SoT would not be getting the attention it does if it wasn't exclusive. It'd already be dead in the water. It wouldn't be getting as much attention if MS had its big AAA games to tout. It'd be about the same hype level as Ori or Recore, which were more bylines in the overall make up of games to look forward to.

MS can compete with Sony. They did so last gen. They just aren't doing the same things they did last gen, and their sales are lower because of it.

Tazzy2631d ago

Its going to be hard to compete with Sony and Nintendo I'm an Xbox owner and haven't bought an Xbox One game in a very long time I've been buying games for my PS4PRO. With games like Smash Bros and Spider-man being there I doubt Microsoft will have anything to beat either of those games and who knows what else those 2 companies have incoming come e3.

NeoGamer2322631d ago

So what is going to happen if E3 2018 is no better than E3 2017?

The sky fall? they fold their gaming tents? What?

E3 2018 is not going to make or break MS and the XB One.

As with any year, if they do dumb things they will lose customers. If they do OK things they will retain their customers, and if they do exceptional things they will pick up customers. Chances of them doing dumb things is not high given Phil's performance since Don left. They have been doing all the stuff gamers want... Dropping trying to grab casual gamers with Kinect, improved the console OS drastically, added backwards compatibility, re-jigged gaming projects by shutting down games that they didn't think were good, and starting and putting more development into projects they think are good.

The big question for E3 is what will MS announce on the game side. 343 has been quiet, Coalition, quiet, known external developers working for MS quiet. The leak of Fable was interesting. And MS said the Game Pass money was going to help them fund SP experiences better. I would like to see that type of info.

sinspirit2630d ago

chiefJohn1172631d ago

Besides scalebound and fable and I guess crackdowns cloud tech. What hasn't come to fruition?

RpgSama2631d ago

Phantom Dust, Bellow, Sea of Thieves being a shell of a Game, the same Crackdown that's been showed for Like 5 years straight when according to MS fans it's Sony the one that shows games too early.

2631d ago
Markusb332631d ago

They said high fidelity vr with fallout vr support. Then quietly removed it from their site. Plus honestly 4k uncompromised. Most games fps are compromised to get close to 4k

RacerX2631d ago

Hard to disagree... Crackdown 3 has been dangled in front of us for 5 years, no recent updates. Sea of Thieves? Wtf....

I've had so much great gaming on my X1, but mostly from multiplats like Destiny, Far Cry, Witcher, etc...

I'm waiting until the next FULL next Gen console, and will have to take a hard look at all the competition before I stick with Xbox.

fenome2631d ago (Edited 2631d ago )

@Racer

Seriously, this gen the best thing Xbox has put out is the X, and that's just hardware and mid gen. They're focusing in all the wrong places, software is what keeps your sails floating (pardon the pun).

If they had strong ass teams really pushing the X the competition would be fierce right now. Sadly that's not the case, the X1X didn't even launch with anything show worthy, it was just there all of a sudden. I'm not denying it's capabilities by any means, I'm just questioning the need for it in the first place. Did they make it so you could play other people's games good? Is it for COD and Assassins Creed and Far Cry? Or for you to remember that they actually made games the last couple of generations with improved backwards compatibility? Their whole stance this gen has just been weird and off kilter.

Sony's about to drop God of War, Spiderman, Days Gone, The Last of Us part 2. All these teams are learning from each other and squeezing the most they can out of these machines trying to find out how they can max them out. The X is well worth the money but in my mind it's just not necessary, there's not much incentive other than BC or PC ports, I'm good on that. (I know you guys are sick of this and I'm not trying to write lists or whatever, but c'mon, they just aren't supporting you)

Hopefully next gen they learn from this and actually become a part of the industry (there's no reason they can't be sitting pretty right now other than their own mistakes), rather than just being a business partner to third parties hoping for numbers.

OB1Biker2631d ago (Edited 2631d ago )

Yea it's silly. We see these articles every year too. Even worse, when they say E3 they actually mean just the conference (it's not just that) It's just a window of what the companies want to show. A sort of advertisement. The important is the consistency over time, not just a conference. And that's for all the companies.

TheCommentator2631d ago (Edited 2631d ago )

I have to think that they're doing something quite different this year, starting with the setup being in MS' building where no one has a clue what's being set up. Will DXR show up on XB1 consoles? Will it be new studio announcements? New/back catalog IP? 3rd party contracts for 1st party IP? Just timed exclusives?

I'd like to think that they sucked last year so they could knock it out of the park this year, but we'll see how much their words mean. They delivered on the XB1X promise so I have a bit of confidence that we'll see some surprising goodies this year.

Xbox E3 2014:
-Fable Legends announced (game cancelled)
-Phantom Dust full remake announced (cancelled, port of the original Xbox game instead)
-Scalebound announced (cancelled)
-Crackdown announced (still not released)
-Below announced (still not released)

They also tried to pass Rise of The Tomb Raider as an Xbox One exclusive which created controversy.

Oh yeah Xbox E3 2014 was good alright.

chiefJohn1172631d ago (Edited 2631d ago )

@Kirby you left you everything else and there 2014 lineup was solid. Not 1 person brought up a lack of games. They're 2014 and 15 lineup was better than ps4s even Sony admit it #Sparse
Scalebound was scheduled for a 2016 release not 2014, while delayed crackdown is still release soooo. Fables Legends looked like trash to begin with as a fable fan I had 0 excitement for it and not upset it was cancelled. Not to familiar on below so I have 0 opinion on but I guess your there and phantom dust I was disappointed it didn't release the gameplay looked good to me. 2 cancelled 1 of which was bad to begin with and a MIA delay. Not to shabby I'm in comparison to the cancelled and delayed games of PS4 in 2014 and Xbox games that did release in 2014.

And yes there e3 2014 was good however was irrelevant to my comment. My comment was about the lack of exclusive that lead to ppl saying "wait for e3" not rather or not e3 was good. Show me 1 comment section. That was filled with this kind of talk about a lack of exclusives in 2015, 2014, 2013 don't worry I'll wait

rainslacker2631d ago

Sony's sparse comment was for the holiday season of that year, not the whole year. They still had more releases than MS did that year. MS did have some good releases that year though.

ImportGamer30042631d ago

well they will show a new halo and Forza, but besides that and 20 more controllers I don't see them really doing anything besides 3rd party and timed exclusives. I think we won't see anything for fable or any possible new Ip because they are going to be moving on to the x2, this will be the last e3 focused on x1.

mark_parch2631d ago

the recent marketing deals rumour has got me worried because if it's true the only reason Microsoft would spend that much on 3rd party marketing is if they don't have anything of their own to show. agree there's no way they will show fable, it's far to early. my prediction is crackdown 3 multiplayer, ori and the will of the wisp, forza horizon 4 and a halo teaser all the rest will be multiplats or timed ( console launch exclusives )

chiefJohn1172631d ago (Edited 2631d ago )

Nah I'm expecting 2 new reveals based off what devs have said to be working on. Maybe a 3rd based off a rumor.

I'm expecting cd3 mp, a new ip, Ori, a revival, Halo, a spin-off/new ip. Forza h4. Would like a teaser from Turn 10 Forza should be taking a break from now on Imo. I don't expect Forza 8 next year.

yellowgerbil2631d ago

prepare to be disappointed.
SHOW STARTS WITH BIG LOUD GRAPHICS. Crackdown 3 shown heavily and a release date of this Holliday season.
Then we see some Anthem gameplay complete with more fake chatter that just makes you cringe.
Then jumps right into FORZA
After that expect about an hour of fake exclusives from 3rd parties, may announce something big during this part (like metro last year) but it will be Multiplatform.
Show ends on a high note with a cg teaser of the next Halo, and might show the halo tv show too at some point with long talk from the chick from 343.
Don't expect any big announcements from their first party except for Halo (which probably won't be on x1 probably will be an early x2 game much like Ghost of Tsushima isn't a PS4 game its a PS5 game)
After this year they will be fully focused on the X2 launching in 2020 and Fable will be for that system as well as the Halo game (though the halo might be cross gen like Zelda was for switch).
Im no analyst but I watch these shows every year since way back in the G4 era so I think I have a good grasp on how Microsoft does things.

notachance2631d ago

GamingExplained1010m ago

I mean they have to, since they have 2 exclusives anyone cared about this generation, and those are now on PC. The rest is this creatively bankrupt string of remakes and remasters, taking advantage of the creativity of developers past efforts, and laying off teams creative side since all that work has been done already by previous teams.

By far the least creative generation ever.

IRetrouk18h ago

Kinda always been that way if you look at previous gens, exclusives are important but they aint the main revenue generator.

People are generally paid for the work they are doing. Layoffs generally occur when there is no work for them to do (project cancelled, business slowing down, etc). I’ve been laid off from two jobs during my 40+ years of working so I know about these things. A company is not going to just keep paying people if there is no work for them to do, no matter how much profits they made.

And this is why the game output for ps5 has been a tad slower…

1) they needed to be… games take longer to develop, and they’d burn out their teams trying to maintain the same pace as ps3.

2) they can afford to… games cost more than ever to push boundaries, so Sony had to figure out a way to match Xbox’s clever profit strategies in order to afford to continue to innovate and take risks.

Nah, reaper's not hiding behind anything. I'm just pointing out some facts. At first the narrative was Microsoft isn't going to make the money back from the ABK deal to now their profits wouldn't be as high if they didn't get the deal. This very topic is part of the reason why the deal was secured. Sony's dishonesty and reluctance to tell the truth about how much money they're making and lying about how much this deal would hurt their business. That strategy failed. They're are making a lot of money. MatrixxGT15h ago

Closing studios, layoffs, leadership changes, PS plus increases, multiple game cancellations and delays, total flops like concord. Slowest release of first party games of any generation and they just shut down PS stars I guess because it was costing to much.
Yet they announce record profits…..the greed here is insane, MS and Nintendo too. All of them milking gamers and we just keep lapping it up like a blood hound for a meal.
Them tariffs are really hitting them hard I see.

Deathdeliverer15h ago

Well a part of running a business is a tight grip on that P&L sheet. In project management. It’s a known fact that the farther into a project you go, the more costly the corrections. Having something reach the definition of done, the end of the road, and it’s hated is a monumental loss of money. As games are usually made iteratively it’s like how was this not caught and course corrected several times before this point. Sony is definitely known as trusting and allows teams to make the games they want to make. They “trust the process”. The caveat to that big budget and freedom is if it bombs, especially if it’s your first game, you’re outta there. They have shareholders/stakeholders to keep happy. Where as normally a done game like Concord would give ROI as it was out in the wild. The cost of the project is recouped and turned into profit or delivered whatever value they wanted. If the game is now NOT coming out, how do they get that money back and stay profitable? By not paying wages for that team over a course of time that would have still been on payroll working on the next potential bomb, DLC for a dead game, and essentially costing more money.
It sadly isn’t greed, it’s business. They release these great profits because 1) it’s enticing for more stakeholders to invest, and 2) Despite failures they are still balancing the books and turning record setting profits.
How many live service games died at various stages of development? They are still this profitable? Imagine if the games came out and were hits to add onto the profits?

Christopher8h ago(Edited 8h ago)
