Xbox Continues to Add to Backwards Compatibility - But Does It Even Matter?

Xbox keeps adding to backwards compatibility and that's great - the problem is, very few of its players seem to actually use it when they have it.

When did it make a diference? Its a cool feature, but Just that. It Was never a gamechanger. Because if it did, sales wise Microsoft would be in much better position.

Heelix2644d ago (Edited 2644d ago )

'old' Software should be compatible on the latest hardware.

The companies are taking advantage by re packaging and selling games we already bought back to us.

These remastered games are topping charts which means games are timeless. Which means gamers play games regardless of how old or new they are.

arkard2644d ago

They aren't just repackaged though. Many a remastered, some remade

yomfweeee2644d ago

Again that's just an opinion. Sony had it on PS2 and PS3. They removed it from PS3. PS4 is stomping X1 in sales.

It isn't required by any means. I never used it on PS2 or PS3 and I wouldn't have used it on PS4.

Kumakai2644d ago

100% its your money. you purchased it. you should be able to use it. easily. not stream and rent it for even more money. not buy it again as a remaster at a new game price. especially considering ms is now patching x360 games to take advantage of One X hardware - much like a remaster, but for free. thats awesome to me.

Heelix2644d ago (Edited 2644d ago )

@yomfweeee

PS4 is 'stomping' xo in sales because gamers put Sony's product in that position.
That has nothing to do with being able to play legacy tiles on the latest hardware.

We have every right to want such a feature. We spend money on hardware and games.

It is very much required and the vast majority of gamers would appreciate

not requiring additional hardware to play legacy titles.

jukins2644d ago

Yep because those games they're repacking reselling were all high definition and didn't benefit at all from being remastered

yomfweeee2644d ago

Yes, Sony did gamers right. I'm glad we agree they have focused on the important things. Not BC.

Kumakai, ya you purchased PS3 games and nothing is stopping you from playing them on your PS3.

G20WLY2644d ago

To be fair, so many X360s died, it's kind of a must for MS to allow people to play the games their dead old console can't..

I still have my PS3 and I ONLY play the games I get free with Plus - even then it's very occasional. Other than that, it collects dust, as I play so many great new games I wouldn't have time to waste on nostalgia.

It's a nice option, but I don't care either way.

Prince_TFK2644d ago

“Kumakai, ya you purchased PS3 games and nothing is stopping you from playing them on your PS3.”

What if he had traded his ps3 for the ps4, just like me? I know that BC is not a system seller, far from it, but it would still be very nice to have it. Just have one console under your tv that can play games across generations.

Highlife2644d ago

Don't sell your old system. The game was made for that system. That was what was sold to you. Would it be nice to have sure but not agame changer.

ABizzel12644d ago

It's a great thing to have, especially going forward with new consoles, and with G4G allowing players to play games they may have missed.

That being said, it's a great benefit, but it doesn't make or break a console.

strifeblade2644d ago

Honestly I have used it more than I thought I would. I played assassins creed rogue, playing witcher 2 in 4k, going to play fable anniversary in 4k. Great games look great remastered and cheap and I never played them. Its a welcome addition.

KickSpinFilter2644d ago (Edited 2644d ago )

I think people will go back and tackle games that have been remastered if interested. Take Shadow if the C for instance. I own it for ps2 and never finished it but once I heard it was coming out on PS4 with updated graphics. Was totally down and bought and beat it. BC is great for a launch of a new console. 3 years in its a little late.

bluefox7552644d ago (Edited 2644d ago )

You're missing the point though. Yes, in principle it probably should be a standard feature, but it doesn't really matter because so few people ever use it. Furthermore, I feel like the kind of people that would normally use bc, are the types that keep their old consoles anyway.

bouzebbal2644d ago

i think the feature is cool, nothing more.
cool for those who want as few consoles as possible.
i still have PS3 connected to the TV and i play it a few times, especially move games.
I wish PS4 was able to play those same games.

Finch2643d ago

You know this day and age, I do want backwards comb. Just like I expected from my phone and computer to play all my stuff as I upgrade. It's bs if it doesn't and no reason it shouldn't.

indysurfn2643d ago (Edited 2643d ago )

Lets be honest here. Without backwards compatibility Xbox would be even father behind. Everyone would love to have backwards compatibility for ever console. It's a option if you dont want it just dont use it. So it matters. PS4 would be stomping x1 in sales even worse of it did not have backwards compatibility.

Now that PS4 is on the cpu/gpu architecture instead of cpu cell/ gpu architecture they will be able to make PS5 backwards compatible with PS4 once PS5 comes out.

JackBNimble2643d ago

There is no reason why BC shouldn't be a standard, you should be able to carry all your games forward.

Kumakai2644d ago

so you like re-buying your old games at new price with remasters? you know those are just easy profit for studios, right? i think its pretty great that i can continue to have support for games i have bought in the past. its a bit hypocritical of the sony fanboys who downplay this feature, but then cried outrage about ms' initial xb1 DRM policy because it robbed them of the value of their old games - and yet are perfectly fine supporting psNow to pay money to rent and stream older titles. its especially ironic when you factor in the One X as they are now patching older games to run and render better on the current hardware - much like a remaster - but for free. Thats a hell of a feature to me.

FullmetalRoyale2644d ago (Edited 2644d ago )

Ain’t nobody like PSNow, son.
I’d love to play old games for “free.”
But what is better that that? Playing new games.

showtimefolks2644d ago (Edited 2644d ago )

Yes I do because those remaster come with update graphics and game play improvements

If it's a lazy remaster simply don't buy it but bluepoint have done excellent work with remaster

Z5012644d ago (Edited 2644d ago )

1. "your old games" & remasters are usually NOT the same game. Most people have only played the original.
2. Why are you listening to fanboys?
3. What does streaming/renting games have to do with a 24hr check-in & letting a friend use your disc?
4. Who's buying games again they already own? (exp. I own RDR on PS3. Why would i buy RDR again? Why would i keep the game but not the console?)

2644d ago
TKCMuzzer2644d ago (Edited 2644d ago )

You don't have to buy them again, that's the choice. It's not easy profit, there are still costs especially when Sony remake/remasters are involved.
You are also assuming that its PSnow user base has already bought them games in the past. You have no figures or proof. The vast majority of PSNow users could be past owners of the 360 who have upgraded to the PS4 and never originally purchased them on a PlayStation platform. Your just as bad as the people you call out, it's all assumption to back up a non argument.
BC is a nice to have feature but it won't change anything, why? Because people who care about games from the past would have kept the console they bought it on becasue it forms part of that nostalgia, that history of their gaming past (looks at his PS3) the rest of the people just use it as a mine is bigger than yours tool in comment sections like this to cover the fact that one console continues to rely on this feature as it fails to offer anything new.
The fact you are congratulating MS for this says it all. BC is not the issue of this generation, the lack of competition for Sony is the bigger issue. Sony may have remasters and remade classic games but that's because the audience is there and that audience used to own a 360, those players get to experience these games on their new hardware for the first with enhanced features. The irony is Microsoft are just as responsible for fuling Sony's remake and remasters by not delivering in the now, Sony are just doing good business by taking advantage of it.

2644d ago
KickSpinFilter2644d ago (Edited 2644d ago )

I don’t have one friend PS4 user that has psnow not one but we all have ps+ for sure. BC is nice sure...at a launch if a system three years in, meh. Too little to late. Cute feature though.

Corroios

It became a big feature according to Xbox fanbase because ps4 doesn't have BC

They call it a huge feature because ms simply can't deliver games like Sony and Nintendo so it needs other features just to stay in conversation

Gamepass
EA access
BC

All are nice to have but none are must have IT app or game

Xbox has the same 3 to 4 IP's for last 10 plus years

76 million plus sold
35 plus million sold
15 million sold In a year

Soon Xbox one will be a distant 3rd and I am sure BC was worth more than having exclusives

darthv722644d ago

"distant 3rd" in what though? If you mean 8th gen, it is 2nd and will stay there because WiiU gave up in 3rd. If you mean 9th gen well MS and Sony have yet to release their 9th gen systems so Switch is uncontested in the 9th gen space.

Chevalier2644d ago

@Darth

Yeah because the general population cares what generation they are playing. The only thing that matters currently is Nintendo is stealing mindshare and sales from Xbox regardless of which generation it is. A family that has purchased a Switch which might have been an Xbox otherwise. Nintendo in a year has jumped ahead of Xbox.

chiefJohn1172644d ago

Ms would already have released there next gen before the switch pass the one.

Dragonscale2643d ago

Using generations to excuse xbone's poor sales is a strawman bullcrap argument. Just face it, xbone is getting tonked by both its rivals into irrelevance.

showtimefolks2643d ago

Chief

A new Xbox console is my coming till atleast 2020 and with the way switch is selling it will surpass Xbox one in sales by late 2019

JackBNimble2643d ago

I buy digital games and I've been doing this ever since last gen. I have quite the game collection with close to 300 games between this and last gen.
My point is.... I would have very much appreciated being able to carry all my games forward from last gen. I understand the hardware issue and yes I still have 2 ps3. But going forward I see no reason why ps5 shouldn't be BC. I will be very irritated if I can't at the very least continue to play ps4 games from my PSN profile on the next gen console.

I have been supporting Sony for over 20 years and I don't think it's to much to ask to be able to play my complete games collection on the newest platform.

PC gamers are laughing at you guy's who say otherwise.

Yes, it matters. It would change the tide......

Naaaaah, it won't.

Goldenhawk5212644d ago (Edited 2644d ago )

I just can't understand why Microsoft has to make it so complicated to just have all the games backwards compatible. It has to be only certain games at certain months like it's a process they have to go through with each and every single game. Nintendo has made their consoles backwards compatible with every last-gen game many times and they didn't make it so complicated. So did Sony. So weird.

narsaku2644d ago

Being able to play your favorite games without buying an old VCR in today's society is a game changer.

When you're older, you'll understand.

Dragonscale2643d ago

Wasn't much of a 'game changer' for xbone was it.

2644d ago
Dragonscale2643d ago

Its just a ruse to hide the lack of new ip's on xbone. Switch doesn't have it but that seems to be ok somehow. The only reason the fanatx bang on about it is so they can bash Sony. Its an ok but inessential feature tbh.

IamTylerDurden12643d ago (Edited 2643d ago )

It's a nice feature but five years into the generation it doesn't mean as much as it would've on day 1. We are inundated with great current gen games right now, so i can't imagine people have too much time to replay their old last gen games. We aren't talking remakes or remasters with all new assets and improved controls. People are literally just playing the last gen games that they already own. Obviously it's a good feature, but i would assume people are much more excited about things like God of War, Kingdom Hearts 3, Detroit, Far Cry 5, Ni No Kuni II, Dreams, and Spiderman.

Christopher2643d ago (Edited 2643d ago )

Making a difference and being a game changer are really different things.

BC matters to me personally. It has allowed me to play games I miss without having to use old hardware and carries over my content from last generation.

It hasn't changed the fact that I primarily play current generation games (like FC5). But it's a thing they've done that allows me access to more without me having to pay extra for it.

I seriously hope the next generation of consoles, all of them, do the same thing.

Switch has not done this. Ports from WiiU are full priced. IMHO that is the bad way to sell a new system, by charging full price for games released on your old system that have zero enhancements and are just ports.

Microsoft is doing previous generation ports right, IMHO. Regardless of what ever else you think about them, give them credit for doing the absolutely right thing here. We should all hope this is something everyone does moving forward. It's about convenience and not spending money to rebuy games we already own.

lptmg2644d ago

why not? give consumers options

ShottyatLaw2644d ago

I believe "fans" are the one group where it actually does matter. It's not a large group, but that says something in and of itself.

It won't cause them to suddenly sell millions of consoles, but that's obviously not the goal.

G20WLY2644d ago

Their goal isn't to sell millions of consoles??! 🤔

ShottyatLaw2644d ago

Keep thinking about it. You'll get there eventually.

Here, I'll help you: No, I do not believe releasing a few classic OG Xbox games is designed to move millions of consoles.

It's a small investment targeted at getting some goodwill from fans.

G20WLY2643d ago

Right, but they want to sell millions of consoles, surely..

If it's goodwill from fans they seek, maybe make some exclusives and new IPs. 👍

With the refinement of PC-based emulators, backwards compatibility isn't really necessary unless they used hardware-based DRM to lock certain games out.

Gazondaily2644d ago

Of course it matters. Better than mugging players off making them pay for games they already own No?

PFFT2644d ago

Exactly! Those disagrees though. Guess people love buying games twice.

Cohagen4202644d ago

If its visually superior of course ppl will buy it again.

TKCMuzzer2644d ago

Did you ever buy the same film twice or three times? VHS, DVD, Blu Ray? The same music? Are games different for some reason?

Gh05t2643d ago

@Cohagen420

"If its visually superior of course ppl will buy it again." <- The answer I use when people ask Why buy an Xbox One X when you own an Xbox One?

@TKCMuzzer

Yes but that was because my VHS player couldnt play DVDs and my DVD player couldnt play BlueRay. But I sure bought less videos on blueray since it played my DVDs I didnt go back and buy hundreds of movies over again... why? because the Blueray plays DVDs (Back Compat). In fact I think the only duplicate movies I own on both DVD and Blueray where given to me as gifts. In other words I wasnt forced to "buy" them again to play them. It was optional and I chose not to since I owned them already.

My "MP3" Player doesnt play casset tapes, or cds, the CD player doenst play casset tapes either... So I HAD to buy the music again... if it was back compat I wouldnt HAVE TO.

Your analogy is bad and actually works against your point. Now that the music is digital, I have it stored on my own server (And backed up in a cloud storage) and can play it from any internet connected device with a browser, or media player, or download it to a non internet connected device; making it as future proof as we are going to get for the time being and never having to purchase the songs again.

Thegamer412644d ago

It's not mugging players off when they're not forced to buy it. If you have the original copy, you should also have the original console to play it on. If you sold the original console, that's on you.
Also, many people that own old games would still go out and buy the remakes if done well, Crash Bandicoot is a good example. Point is, BC and remakes are not aimed at the same people.

Z5012644d ago (Edited 2644d ago )

Exactly.
No one is "making them pay for games they already own" It's an OPTION. <--- A word i see used alot in this comment section.

"that's on you"
Bingo!

Z5012644d ago (Edited 2644d ago )

Again, who's buying games they already own? Source/Proof
*A remaster is something *insert made-up personS here* they've probably never played.
**I've played SotC. But i've never played the remaster. So the remaster would be a new purchase/experience for me.

Gazondaily2644d ago

I'm not talking remasters and remakes. Not all old games have been remastered or remade.

Emme2644d ago

I buy them because formerly I had them on disc, now I can download them, much more convenient !

bigmalky2644d ago

What if you want to play a BC game that you don't own already, or got rid of and want to play again?

I don't know about you, but I picked up Gears 2 last year for £5 from the local swapshop to play on my son's old 360 (yes I play a few Xbox games)... I checked after all the patches came in, and guess what? The same shop selling Gears 2 for £15.

For one game you wish to play, but don't have on your shelf, that's going to cost a lot more recollecting or buying new 360 games than Now is for a ton of titles in one monthly sub.

I'm not a huge fan of PS Now, but I've bought the few occasional subs to play Red Dead Redemption, the Atelier games and a few others.

The point is, if you want more new retro games that you haven't played, you still have to pay, free update or not.

DigitalRaptor2644d ago (Edited 2644d ago )

It matters as a gamer if you appreciate returning to play old games. It will matter a lot for transitioning into the next-gen, especially so with large communities and if these platform holders want to retain the users that are supplying them with a ton of money via popular service-based games like Fortnite and Overwatch.

SuperSaiyanGod412644d ago

It definitely matters, whoever says it doesn't is delusional but in Microsofts position backward compatibility shouldn't be their main focus especially when out of the big 3 they offer so little for a corporation that is worth way more then Sony and Nintendo put together. They should be ashamed of how little their 1st party library is especially this gen. There is no excuse for them to not have way more 1st party exclusives.

Project: Horned Owl Review

From the mid-1980s to the early part of the 2000s, light gun rail shooters were a staple in both arcade and home system gaming. Arguably, the genre started to really hit its stride in the mid-1990s. While games like Time Crisis, Virtual Cop, and House of the Dead, among others, dominated both the home system and arcade space, some one relegated to only home game systems. Today, we’ll be talking about a little-known cult game published by Sony called Project: Horned Owl. This game was developed by Alfa Systems, and all in all, this is a fun game.

The director of the original Silent Hill: “I look forward to seeing bold interpretations.”

Keiichiro Toyama—the creator and original director of the 1999 Silent Hill—shared his personal thoughts on the recently announced remake by Konami, reflecting on what the project means to him after more than two decades:
“I felt something similar when the game was adapted into a movie. It deeply moved me to see the names of the characters and locations I had created come to life visually, even though I wasn’t directly involved. That wouldn’t have been possible without the continued support of the fans and the dedication of the developers who’ve kept the series alive.
I’m really looking forward to seeing how the remake evolves this time. With the advanced technology we now have, I’m sure I’ll be surprised by how the game is reimagined. Since the original was built for the first PlayStation, there will naturally be challenges—like the camera and controls—but I’m eager to see bold and creative solutions to those elements.”

You got downvotes by pathetic gamers for feeling hopeful about good games coming out next year. Imagine how small your brain must be to downvote someone excited for future gaming joy? It is pretty neat to see people's world view blow up in front of them as they realize Microsoft has put themselves in a driver's seat that Sony hasn't been able to touch all generation.... What's even more pathetic is the same people downvoting you are the same people wishlisting Microsoft games on their ps5s 😂

Mortal Shell II, Onimusha, Marvel1943: Rise of Hydra

How many of those titles were just buyouts of companies that were going about making their games anyways? *Throws cash - "Oh look what we made!"

dveio17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

This list, that's been posted again, and again, and again in every single topic like this, contains almost nothing, literally almost nothing from Microsoft's own creational thoughtprocess.

It's a bunch of former 3rd party IPs.

Now even slowly returning to Playstation in some cases like Indiana, Hellblade, probably Starfield soon too, after they were made exclusively to Xbox on purpose.

Due to Microsoft's lack for own IP material except Halo & Forza. Which, the lack of, was the sole reason for all of it to happen in the first place anyway. Please don't pretend it wasn't.

And just look at all the games that come from Obsidian alone.

You really think Obsidian wasn't already working on Avowed and South of Midnight even without Microsoft buying Zenimax?

Microsoft delivered nothing but cheques.

OtterX17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

@dveio THIS. Lol, this dude thinks Call of Duty wouldn't exist without Microsoft! smh 😂

neutralgamer199217d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Common narrative I see often — that Microsoft shouldn’t get credit for the games its studios release because they “just bought them.” But this viewpoint ignores key context and sets a double standard that other platform holders aren’t held to

No one is saying these games wouldn't exist at all without Microsoft. But let’s not pretend that having a trillion-dollar company backing a studio doesn’t make a massive difference. Obsidian never had AAA funding before the Xbox acquisition. Pillars of Eternity was crowdfunded, and their resources were always stretched thin. Now they’re working on Avowed, with proper support behind it.

Ninja Theory’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was made by around 20 people, using borrowed equipment and doing mocap in a boardroom. It was a passion project held together by tape and willpower. Today, Hellblade II exists because they were given resources, time, and freedom — something many developers don’t get unless they’re owned by a company that believes in their vision.

ZeniMax (Bethesda’s parent company) was in real financial trouble before the Microsoft acquisition. Reports and insider accounts have pointed out how much they needed a cash infusion. And while some people want to write off Xbox’s ownership of Bethesda titles, they forget the alternative could have meant layoffs or even closures.

The same goes for Activision Blizzard. Would you really prefer the company to stay under Bobby Kotick, after all the documented workplace misconduct and toxic leadership issues? Say what you want about Microsoft, but their acquisition brought accountability and change to a company that desperately needed it.

At the same time, Xbox gets hated on for doing what every major company does. Sony bought Housemarque, Bluepoint, Insomniac — but no one says Spider-Man 2 “doesn’t count” because of that. Why does Xbox get treated differently for acquiring struggling or undervalued developers and giving them a chance to thrive?

And the idea that Xbox locks games away is outdated. They're pushing cross-platform releases, cloud gaming, Game Pass, and backward compatibility more than any other platform holder. They're not forcing all studios into live service. If anything, their upcoming lineup is less GAAS-heavy and more focused on narrative and creativity — Avowed, South of Midnight, Clockwork Revolution, Fable, Perfect Dark, Towerborne, and others show real variety.

Whether people like it or not, Xbox is now the biggest publisher in the industry and owns the most gaming IPs. But what matters more is how they treat their studios. Most of these teams were previously stuck making AA games with limited scope — now they’re getting the tools and support to aim higher.

So when people say “Microsoft didn’t make those games,” they’re missing the point. It’s not about who started the studio — it’s about who enabled them to do their best work. You don’t have to love Xbox to admit they’ve helped a lot of developers and are taking a player-first approach.

Instead of writing off everything they do, maybe try recognizing the good they’re doing for both devs and gamers. At the end of the day, we should want more studios to succeed — no matter who owns them

BeHunted17d ago

I'm surprised Clockwork Revolution (BioShock meets Dishonored) isn't getting more media attention. The game looks interesting and reminds me of the old RPG games.

The only good game on that list is Flight sim. The rest are either average or will be average. It's not a good look for MS.

My god.... Look how many comments are upset about microsoft's successes... 😂 This may be my new favorite thread. Not one gamer saying thanks for all the goodness coming their way, just bitter anger and downvoting the very games they themselves will purchase throughout 2026.... Sony really worked you guys over this generation.... Condolences.

@neutralgamer1992 You said what needed to be said.

I have heard for years from older gamers that fanboys are the biggest issue with any fanbase. They will defend or gloss over negative news as long as the correct logo is on the box and they bash the competing platform no matter how much good they are trying to bring.

Right now their advocacy for PlayStation is elevating that platform so high that Sony no longer believes they need to do anything to satisfy their loyal fanbase like they did in the PS4 days.

I just hope most of them will eventually start advocating for themselves and encourage others to do the same. No one should blindly support one platform because these companies do not care about anything other than profit.

Hunted

And first proper game done by the studio with proper AAA budget and saying it will be released when ready

Anast

I believe we went through this before that you are objectively wrong. Meta critic, user reviews, game sales. In Playstation top 10 best selling games were 5 from Microsoft studios

Otter

No this dude is saying so many other studios wouldn't be thriving without MS money and people would be getting abused physically and mentally with Bobby kotick and his side kicks

Also maybe look up how the original founder of Bethesda and zenimax was kicked out of his own company by his best friend lawyer. So that was always a shady place and had been struggling financially before MS paid a premium of almost 7 billion

Eroica

I use to be a die hard Playstation fan and now I only have a Pc. I see how these fans are so toxic. They just can't handle any positive news regarding Xbox. When the best selling games on playstation are Xbox titles. Look at Forza horizon being best seller and that's years old game by MS. I guess ms don't deserve credit for that success too since they are the only company in gaming making acquisitions

Forget the fact Sony paid 3.6 billion for bungie and MS 6.9 for zenimax. Which investment has turned out better

Destiny and marathon with a lot of controversy

While zenimax output is nothing short of amazing compared to what bungie has released

crazyCoconuts17d ago

Yeah it's tricky. "Xbox" has morphed to mean different things to different people.
Console, now Windows, GamePass, and the cross platform games. There's a mix of attitudes towards all those things individually, and maybe an overarching attitude towards MS. But can't argue that the game companies MS recently bought continue to flourish, and GamePass PC has been a great value over the last year.

They've had good output so far. So waiting for those games shouldn't be a problem.

Who cares if they're buy outs of companies or whatever excuse you want to make. They're games that are being distributed to other console. Play the games and enjoy it instead of fanboying or complaining.

ocelot0717d ago

They going to be a he best and biggest publisher on Xbox, Playstation and PC next year. They not really said anything about Switch 2 though spite claiming to be big supporters.

quenomamen17d ago

If you call making one last Xbox before going full Sega, as Great. Then yea.

TheEroica17d ago

Doesn't feel like you're paying attention to what's happening.
