Far Cry 5 review | Polygon

What’s left if you have the stomach to ignore the story? A very enjoyable game with an immense number of things to do, a beautifully recreated portion of the United States, and a collection of missions with wildly varying tones and structure. It’s a finely tuned open-world game stapled onto a story that’s insultingly bad.

ChrisW2221d ago

Are they clowns? Probably.

But personally, I like it when I see a major reviewer give a AAA game a score a couple points lower than the rest. Not that I actually take the review entirely to heart... but, to me, it seems like they are saying, "Screw your presents and bonus cash for a glorifying review and a couple extra points!" In other words, I like it when people refuse bribery and state what they feel about something.

And well all know publishers bribe gaming journalists!

Is the reviewer going to get in trouble and asked/forced to redact his opinion and change the score? Most likely... And that's sad!!!

thekhurg2221d ago

Except Polygon took presents and bonus cash straight from Microsoft. So they can't take any type of moral high ground.

xHeavYx2221d ago

Or they can... You know... Give the game the score it deserves without looking at other reviews?

Palitera2221d ago

As if it was their intention to be honest. This is pure clickbait. Also pretty obvious...

Vectrexer2221d ago (Edited 2221d ago )

Thetrollhurg
Oh yeah bring MS into this you're as clueless as polygon!

darthv722221d ago (Edited 2221d ago )

I still dont know the whole MS conspiracy. If MS were calling the shots at Polygon then SoT would have been a 10.

If they give GoW a 9 then what? What did they score HZD or TLoU?

morganfell2221d ago

"...it seems like they are saying, "Screw your presents and bonus cash for a glorifying review and a couple extra points!"

Except this is Polygon. A more apt reasoning of their actions would be as follows:

...it seems they are saying, "Screw you for NOT giving us presents and bonus cash for a glorifying review and a couple extra points!"

OB1Biker2221d ago

What is sad is reviewers doing such a poor job. Its not some sort essay they are supposed to deliver here. Scores are not the point.

AAWELLS092220d ago

You've got some pretty serious issues I must say.

dennigo2220d ago

what's happened here is this: hey let's give this game a lower score than all the other reviewers, then we get a lot more trafic to our site.

THIS ALWAYS WORKS, any press is good press, and you know what polygon got press that's all that happened, the smaller reviewers i trust are giving this game way better scores, and that's enough proof for me that these guys are just hungry for clicks.
that's why i won't click that link as i know it will be bullshit.

Lovable2220d ago

This is by far one of the stupidest post I've read in this website...Thanks ChrisW

Profchaos2220d ago

In what way did they take any form of bribe they attempted to turn a video game into a political statement. I've played about 4 hours far cry 5 so far it's a fun game I'd happily give it a 8.9 so far

Aceman182221d ago

To the reviewer you can go stuff your review I'll be enjoying this game.

Cyborgg2221d ago (Edited 2221d ago )

IGN and Gamespot gave it a provisional score of 9 so far

PUBG2221d ago

IGN is nothing more than a marketing site for video games, which is why I rarely watch their reviews or go to their website anymore.

Old McGroin2220d ago

@ PUBG

Which gaming site would you recommend? I pretty much always head straight for IGN, what would a good alternative be?

MadLad2220d ago (Edited 2220d ago )

I don't give much credit to review sites at this point. Most are just dinosaurs, doing what they can to remain somewhat relevant. I have a small number of YouTubers who I go to for opinions on new titles. AngryCentaurGaming, gggmanlives, and a few others.

Rippcity2220d ago

@Old McGroin Honestly the best way to get an opinion about a game is to watch gameplay, trailers and play it yourself if you can. I hardly ever base game purchases on anything other than my opinion alone. I do make one exception to that rule that is Yahtzee who puts out the Zero Punctuation video reviews on escapistmagazine.com. His reviews are hilariously brutal and he really will only endorse games that are unique or great experiences. Granted he will bash almost any game into the ground (including a lot of games I like) but his reviews are usually worth a watch and will give you the honest to goodness truth about the game's strengths and flaws.

notachance2221d ago

lol the reviewer basically said gameplay is the best in FC series but because it's not politically correct enough it gets at least 2 points docked from the score

I mean, seriously? this site gave FC4 a 9 and Primal a 8.5
Primal is 2 whole points better than FC5??
and FC4 having basically the same setting with charismatic cult leader but because it's "monkeys flinging their sh*t" and not good 'ol whites and christians so it's ok and here have a 9?

Inzo2221d ago

You got a lot of up-votes for calling a guy who gave his opinion on the game, a clown, from people who have most probably not played the game yet. I guess this is the world we live in today.

JD_Shadow2220d ago

No, they are saying to leave the personal political viewpoints out of how to score a game. Most of us are looking for an immersive experience that is not marred by clunky control schemes, stupid DLC behaviors, and is actually playable at launch. Why should a person's personal political beliefs factor into how they score a game? We all know not everyone will agree with everyone politically.

And this is Polygon we're talking about. We all KNOW the controversies they were in these past 4 years that they've doubled down on.

Inzo2219d ago

@JD_Shadow
Yes I agree and I apologise for the premature conclusion, after reading this article I can wholeheartedly agree that this guy is a clown.

GTgamer2220d ago

I wouldn't trust any farcrys reviews because ubisoft sent majority of these major website free stuff and took them out to a range so tbh I only watch acg his reviews are the best in my opinion.

joab7772220d ago

We knew people would hate the subject of the story. Those who are religious will hate the portrayal and those who aren’t will hate that its religious.

“Those folks shouldn’t worry; any thematic point to be made about religion, the United States or the current state of the nation’s politics is quickly thrown aside to make way for all sorts of jokes and lighthearted hijinks“

LOL Aww poor polygon. This could have been great if only you had a sense of humor. You make it sound great to me.

PhantomS422221d ago

People need to stop thinking this game has any commentary on US politics...this was started years before the last election and the theme is about cults. Guess the people at Polygon never listened or read any interviews with the developers.

_-EDMIX-_2221d ago

Agreed if anything a lot of the concepts are stuff that have always existed in the United States for a very very very long time.

coolbeans2221d ago

Your first sentence doesn't meaningfully criticize that summary. When looking at US history, cults have had an uncomfortable relationship with US politics in the past. If all Ubisoft did with such a setting and antagonist was "Vaas-level crazy but a white cultist" then I can see how that'd be disappointing to some. When considering everything that's been bubbling to the surface here since 2015 this game had potential to carefully examine those elements within Far Cry's gameplay template. Tough to pull off? Without question! But still would be interesting to see versus what Polygon's proposing they did.

[Note: I can't question reviewer's accuracy in their summary + assessment b/c I haven't played the game. My response with intended as though I'm taking what's in the description as correct for my above-stated argument.]

Cobra9512221d ago

I would agree with you, except that Ubisoft did seize on our current dark political times to help promote the game. Whether they originally set out to disparage the middle of the country or not, the fact is they eventually went there, and earned my disdain as a result.

Xenophon_York2221d ago (Edited 2221d ago )

Um? How?

Okay, so maaaaybe Polygon is trying to downplay the [surely soon to be discovered] fact that Far Cry 5 is better [see: way] than Sea of Thieves. There-by keeping some gamers from picking up Far Cry 5 over Sea of Thieves? Seems crazy, I know, but does anythung else makes sense? 🤷‍♂️

darthv722221d ago (Edited 2221d ago )

Not sure how that is relevant considering it's two different people reviewing. If it was the same person then I could see your point. At least their scores are consistent even though they don't jive with my personal view. I'd rate both higher with SoT at a solid 7 and FC5 sitting at an 8.5

Xenophon_York2221d ago

Hey, that was just the best-worst reason I could imagine. I admitted it seemed like a tin-foil-hat hypothesis. Idea was to get a round-table going to try to reason it out. I mean, maybe it actually is that subpar. Just seems super unlikely.

Kribwalker2221d ago

Your conspiracy theory is way out in left field.

PUBG2221d ago

Why would Polygon care if someone buys Sea of Thieves or Far Cry 5?

Xenophon_York2221d ago

Not that it does, but some websites utilize Microsoft services such as server hosting, cloud services and various other software. This can lead to some of these review sites making connections and form bonds at MS, where one thing can lead to another...

There's also the parent company, umbrella scenario. This can sometimes be seen when you read a story and at the end will be a little line conveying if the reporting site is affiliated by corporate bonds with the subject of the story.

OffRoadKing2221d ago

I dont think it takes conspiracy theories to see that Far Cry 5 is just a vastly superior game to SOT. People will most assuredly abandon that to play Far Cry instead, theres just going to be way more to do.

cell9892221d ago

your theory nails it,bullseye!!

goldwyncq2221d ago

Calm down, Far Cry 5 isn't one of your precious Playstation exclusives. There's no need for outrage.

mkis0072221d ago

Or maybe its just stupid when a great game gets rated the same as a bad one...platform be damned.

Kiwi662221d ago (Edited 2221d ago )

If people want to get FC5 they will, if they want to get SoT they will and if they want to get both they will so one review from one site will not change anything if people have decided on what games they want

slasaru012220d ago

Not crazy. Major SOT reviewers received an expensive gift from Microsoft to cover up the empty game And oil the scores

Played and enjoyed Far Cry, Far Cry 3 and 4 campaigns .

-Foxtrot41d ago

4 wasn’t so bad

Pagan Min was pretty entertaining

Skuletor41d ago

Yeah, 4 was good, was hard choosing which Golden Dawn member to side with, when they were both pieces of sh!t.
I've beaten all the main entries except 2 and 6, ended up uninstalling 6 to download something else instead.

Profchaos41d ago

I'd love a far cry pack with the original PC game (not the half assed port on ps360) instincts, predator even a port of far cry 2 to modern consoles back when these games had their own identity and weren't far cry 3 cut and pastel

Demetrius41d ago

Still one of my most favorite franchises along with assassins creed

banger8841d ago (Edited 41d ago )

Same here, I don't know why these games get so much hate. I've thoroughly enjoyed every single one of them, with only a couple of exceptions. I wish they'd hurry up and announce Far Cry 7. The only thing I'm concerned about is the rumoured time limit.

Far Cry 5 Has Surpassed 30 Million Players Worldwide

The 2018 first-person shooter has reached this milestone exactly 5 years after its initial release.

Profchaos392d ago

When you're free on every single service it's eventually going to happen.

Profchaos391d ago

Part of PS plus at the moment

ChasterMies391d ago

Far Cry 5 is “free” if you pay for PS+ Extra.

gangsta_red391d ago

Going to have to try and get back into Far Cry. The formula for Far Cry may be fun, but it gets repetitive very fast.

Demetrius391d ago

Been playing this series since far cry 3 I love the adventuring vibe this series gives off even far cry primal is so good, but experiencing far cry 5 in 60 fps crisp graphics on ps5 for the first time is dope it adds life to it, I wana give far cry 6 a second chance couldn’t get into it at first I wonder if it’s worth it

Far Cry 5 in native 60 FPS - available for PS5 & Xbox Series consoles now

Far Cry 5 Official Twitter: "You've been waiting long enough… Welcome to Hope County! Experience Far Cry 5 in native 60 FPS - available for PS5 & Xbox Series consoles … NOW! Far Cry 5 will also have a FREE WEEKEND from March 23-27 on all consoles & PC. Enjoy!"

banger88405d ago

Damn. I replayed it recently on SX with fps boost, and to achieve that they had to downgrade the resolution. Game played great but looked like ass. Wish I had've waited.

blackblades405d ago (Edited 405d ago )

So you saying fps boost lowers the resolution to achieve 60fps? Cause that culteastwitch was praising in a fanboy cok suking way.

Darkwatchman405d ago

It depends on the game. Some keep Xbox One X resolution. Others drop to base Xbox One resolution and settings.

Knushwood Butt405d ago

Nice
Waiting to play this on Extra but have had too much else to play.
So is this a native PS5 version or does the PS4 version run at 60fps on PS5?

Jin_Sakai405d ago

As expected, Far Cry 5 will now run at 60 frames-per-second on PS5,

“as part of a patch that optimises the PS4 game on Sony's new-gen console.”

Knushwood Butt405d ago

Downloading now. I might do a bit of pancake gaming this weekend.

Eidolon405d ago

Not native PS5. But still looked pretty good on PS4 Pro, and at a solid 60fps, definitely a good experience. Sadly games can't break out of PS4 Pro resolutions, for some reason.

LucasRuinedChildhood404d ago

PS4 games can run 2-2.5 times better on PS5. They're basically just changing the framerate cap to take advantage of that. They could actually change the resolution but it might affect the framerate - it's not a native PS5 game so it can't properly take advantage of the hardware. 1620p isn't bad, tbh.

Eidolon405d ago

Was really hoping to read that New Dawn would be upgraded as well. :( Already beat Far Cry 5 + and only like 1 hr into New Dawn.

KeeseToast405d ago (Edited 405d ago )

Pretty nice 👍
Now we’ll only need fps boost for:
Arkham Knight
Bloodborne
The Last Guardian
Assassin‘s Creed Unity
Shadow of the Colossus
Gravity Rush 2

Did I forget something?

Welshy405d ago

The worst part about AC Unity is that it *does* run natively at 60fps, but only when running the 1.0 version from the disc. If you allow the game to update, future patches applied a 30fps cap for some reason.

I don't see any reason it would be difficult to just lift the cap that they added.

CML2405d ago

Shadow of the Colossus already runs at 60fps.
Its possible to play The Last Guardian at 60fps with an unpatched disc version too.

Stanjara404d ago

So why not unlock framerate cap on the latest version? Can't be that hard.

CML2404d ago

Probably because the studio doesnt exist anymore. 🥲

LucasRuinedChildhood404d ago (Edited 404d ago )

Absolutely. RDR2 still sells very well so the lack of a next gen version after GTA5 next gen is really annoying.
