Dreams is the most ambitious make-your-own-game engine ever, but will that be enough? | GameCrate

Dreams will be coming out sometime in 2018 as a PS4 exclusive. Undoubtedly, some dedicated creators are going to spend very long hours using the game's powerful tools to craft seriously impressive experiences. But what will the average player make of, and make with, Dreams?

It will have a diverse single-player campaign where you play through the intertwining stories of 3 characters. Each Media Molecule game has had a decently lengthy SP campaign, so this is to be expected regardless. Then you have the actual non-story aspects of the game, which quite frankly offers limitless potential within the confines of the tools and level thermometer.

You don't have to create levels or assets. You can simply play other people's levels or remix them for fun. You can have fun curating "playlists" for other people to play and gain a name for yourself that way. You can go as deep as you want, but the deeper you go with creation, the more recognition you will get from other players and it will tie into a reputation (and I assume a reward) system. You can create a musical instrument and that instrument will have your name attached to it if you choose to allow that - other people can use it in their levels or remix it and publish it as theirs, but its origin will be attributed to you.

You don't even have to touch the multiplayer (I believe it's drop in and drop out), but if you do the option is there. The opportunity to create together gets my mind flowing with ideas.

There will be such a diverse range of gameplay on offer in here.

Fully fledged racing games, shooters, adventures, puzzles, platformers, and outside of gamey genres there will be opportunities for non-game stuff like art creation, music creation etc.

It's going to be amazing!

Well said.

Dreams is not a $60 game engine, it is a game. It has a robust sp campaign and the creation will be deeper than anything we've seen on console, but it will also be accessible to everyone. As simple or as deep as you want to go.

People are missing the boat if they aren't deeply interested in the prospects of this game, it is like LBP but drastically evolved and with a heavy dose of steroids.

darthv722641d ago

I really dig their LBP work so this one interest me quite a bit. I love the way its shaping up. That sharing of created content is a great feature they are keeping going.

Atticus_finch2641d ago

Calling it an engine would be missing the point. It is foremost a game.
I loved lil big planet since the first one, dreams seems to be better.

SuperSonic912641d ago

Imagine Megaman Legends being recreated in this game. Wow!

Another GOTY contender for PS4
A true game changer
My team is already brainstorming gameplay mechanics for our game.

I am sure that guy who made FFVII on LBP 2 will be back to remake it again.

This game is going to be HUGE!

_-EDMIX-_2641d ago

I don't know if I could say this would be a big game of the year Contender but I would be genuinely surprised if it really did receive Game of the Year award by some Outlet.

I mean if it's releasing this year it's going up against God of War Red Dead Redemption Smash Brothers and that is just a whole lot to go up against

chris2352641d ago

user generated content games is the same BS mechanic as procedurally generated games. they did 3 LBP games and now they think they found a niche. personally, i‘m done with media molecules concept. but i wish them good luck.

Not expecting a good turnout for this game...

WilliamSheridan2640d ago

Because games like Little Big Planet, Project Spark, etc have tried the whole Game Maker approach before. As creative as they are, the average user can't make anything good. The your 5% supply content for the other 95% and in the end the content is never anything worth playing for more than 5 minutes. I think they are cool tools, but they aren't really games. More like advanced game engines with simplified tools.

DigitalRaptor2638d ago (Edited 2638d ago )

That explanation is really not gonna cut it, and is extremely opinionated to the point that you're trying to summarise the quality of the game and its success on something you are jaded towards and biased against.

Project Spark never took off because of its crazy weak limitations and the community wasn't as strong because Microsoft didn't bother to promote the game, like Sony did with LBP.

The ratings LBP & LBP2 received categorically prove you wrong in terms of what is good or not. Regardless of how you're trying here, LBP had its constraints to 2.5D or really limited 3D implementations, whilst Dreams blows the lid off what is possible with actual feasible 3D games. You clearly haven't bothered to educate yourself about Dreams if you think it's on the same level, and that it has simplified tools. Its tools are as deep as you want them to be.

narsaku2641d ago

Isn't Dreams from the Little Big Planet team?

God if it is... I loved LBP2. And it's level editor was tons of fun.

michellelynn09762641d ago

You are correct. LBP was awesome and this looks amazing too. Media Molecule makes it and it should be a smash hit and absolute blast.

Dreams had potential but it really needed to get off of the PS4. It released so late in the gen when everyone was already wanting to move on to next gen systems. It should have come to PC, and a native PS5 version should have definitely released.

Knushwood Butt133d ago

I bought it Day 1 but the 'campaign' was pretentious and just didn't work for me. I had no intention of making content so was left to fumble through the user created content. Some good stuff, with the pig detective being the most memorable. However, just moved on to other stuff, and despite owning VR, never once played in VR either.

Knushwood Butt133d ago

Media Molecule always seem to be too ahead of the curve to have a big hit. Hopefully whatever they are working on now finds a big audience.

YoungKingDoran133d ago

For whatever reason/s they somehow dropped the ball hard with Dreams, our loss

Lionsguard133d ago

Dreams was fantastic, especially when VR was added. The things people managed to build was incredible. Some of the best VR experiences are still from Dreams experiences. The huge crux for it was being on consoles however and it was missing one thing that they didn't have back then and that we have now..... A.I.. With the advent of AI today, if they could have had Dreams running on PC and somehow got AI to work where we just typed in a prompt and it did things, it would have been a massive game changer, it could have just made the AI "Dream" and create its own things. It could have solved their problem of somehow getting one dream to just change into another one seamlessly. I really think Dreams deserves a second chance.

Rancegamerx133d ago

It was an awesome idea but even with tools that were supposed to make it easier to make a game, it was still so hard and convoluted. It tried to do to much at once. It would have been better to separate everything into easier parts, build the world, then the character's, then the music, etc. Not everything all at once. Some people understood it but most were overwelmed or confused.

I have to emphasize that this is an extremly well made remake, it's the full game with all the content and features plus more. Visuals and sound is very close to the original, this version was recently published. I know there's a lot of predjudice against Dreams, which is a shame and not really deserved, the tool is much more capable than many think.

fr0sty243d ago

Just a reminder that Dreams is free on PS+ Premium... if you have it, go download it, and thank us later. It's a truly fantastic game.

If there was one PC version that should have existed it’s Dreams

I’m super glad they will be going back to something more traditional gaming wise.

Cacabunga407d ago

I’m sure they’ll find something creative to implement like Tearaway on vita. What a gem 💎 that thing was!!!

Abear21407d ago

My dream was DreamsVR and creating landscapes, characters, and sculptures using that amazing toolbox in vr, that would have been something imo.

ocelot07407d ago

I thought It has vr support?

Amplitude407d ago

It did but it came out as an update LONG after the game was essentially dead

P_Bomb407d ago

Dreams PC was the dream. Woulda given the game a much needed boost. Here’s hoping they follow it up well.

phoenixwing407d ago

If sony had any sense they'd be making a pc version pronto

mkis007407d ago

They probably ran into the same problem they did with the potential of last of us factions....the support needed was just too much to consider expanding to more platforms for a smallish studio.

Abnor_Mal407d ago (Edited 407d ago )

I use to say this when the game was first releasing, many kept saying it would not be possible, something about the toolsets.

I said this was one game that needed to be on as many platforms as possible, including PC and Xbox just like how Minecraft is everywhere.

Goodguy01407d ago

Creation tools just don't work on console very well. It's definitely more suited for PC, and it's very odd Sony decided not to port it over. Good MM is working on an actual game instead.
