Sea of Thieves Review - Xbox Tavern

Sea of Thieves offers a stunning world for players to explore and uncover its secrets. It's fun, often hilarious, and unique. Though, the lack of meaningful structure and its simplistic gameplay really does hurt the experience. The game needs to offer more than cosmetic stature and acquisition if it wants a lengthy lifespan. Still, this is one of the few exclusives that Microsoft can, and should, be proud of.

It's worrying when an Xbox only site can only stretch it to 7.3/10. I can't believe how squandered this opportunity was, it's a really good concept.

7.3 is a good score, but I'll admit, I was being a little generous on that front.

Totally agree with you, the concept is amazing. Rare really needs to build on it and pad it out. The lack of structure and progression is the biggest letdown for me. There's a lot to do, but outside of stature and appearance, you never feel like you're working toward anything. Becoming a "Pirate Legend" should amount to more than expanding the wardrobe and pleasing three vendors.

I stand by what I say, though, this is one of the few exclusives that MS can be happy about.

Do you feel that only a day was enough time to formulate a review on such a massive game? Or was your review mostly based on the beta?

Glancing over your comment history I can see you ask the same thing to every SoT review available, and defend anything negative spoken about it... but I'll bite..

Yes, I, as many other outlets, felt comfortable across two accounts with the game (for testing purposes) since shortly before launch (it was live early) until now, to form an opinion. No, I did not base my score on the Beta/Stress test. However, given the content in the full release vs the content in the tests, it wouldn't have been hard to do, but again, we didn't.

Would you have asked that question if I gave the game an underserved 10/10?

This game, i feel was made with MP micro-transactions in mind... they probably had it all planned out until the protests over loot boxes/micro-transactions happened. so they probably decided to go ahead with the base model and in future add loot boxes when the topic dies out.

Ah ok, don't worry I knew I didn't like World of Warcraft before I even played it.

Make sense...

Update: Here’s a quote by Sea of Thieves Executive Producer Joe Neate (via IGN) about the lack of content:

“Sea of Thieves is designed from the ground up to be a game that grows and evolves, and we will release new cosmetic options ongoing as part of that, alongside new mechanics and ways to play. Our focus for launch is on delivering a great initial experience, and as we move beyond launch we will be assessing and reacting to player feedback across all areas of the game. We have worked with our community throughout the development of Sea of Thieves, and that will continue in exactly the same manner beyond launch.”

I'm enjoying the game and I think a 7 is pretty fair score 7-8 is where it is for me. But you know how it goes around here unless it's a perfect score it's a fail lol.

6.5 to 7.5 seems about right to me. There is definitely a ton of fun here and what is there is well done. However, no one can deny the lack of mission variety. None of my fun comes directly from these missions, it's always what happens on the way there, or on the way back.
