Is EA's 'Dead Space' the best game of the year?

Dan Ackerman of CNET writes:

"The lack of competition may be one reason why one of the most anticipated new games right now is not a sequel, spin-off, brand extension or movie tie-in. It's EA's scary sci-fi shooter, Dead Space. After playing through the 16-plus hour campaign, I can also say it's easily one of the best games of the year."

ONE of the best? Very possibly.

THE best? Nope.

Beast_Master6092d ago

Why do we even look at CNET anymore... IS EA's Deadspace GOTY?
NOOO! NOT EVEN CLOSE!

A one word answer!

Bnet3436092d ago

Agreed. I already accepted that Gears 2 is my GOTY. Notice how I said my GOTY.

BISHOP-BRASIL6092d ago

Don't even need to say "my" there Kigmail. GeOW2, LBP, MGS4, Fable 2, there are plenty of games playing in a superior league of Dead Space's.

Not saying it's a bad game, it's surprisingly good, sleeper hit, tell you... But this one was not overhyped, there wasn't people expecting that this come and blow sh*t up, there wasn't fanboys playing it down, just so it can turn out great anyway. It have good reviews because nobody expect it, but it don't have to survive half of the pression or (what I like to call) "review competition" any of those 4 tittles I said had and will have to overcome.

nbsmatambo6092d ago (Edited 6092d ago )

Guess he hasn't heard of MGS4, LBP, GeoW 2, R2

Doppy6092d ago

"The lack of competition"?

First off the year isn't even over yet. And does he not know about

Gears of War 2
Resistance 2
Wipeout HD
Far Cry 2
Fallout 3
Bioshock PS3
Socom Confrontation
Fable 2
Little Big Planet
Motorstorm PR
Mirror's Edge
COD 5

The only GOTY award Dead Space has a chance of winning is scariest game of the year.

I doubt it, as good as it may be, i don't think it can stand up to, Gears2, LBP, MGS4 and GTA4

Rofflecopter6092d ago

eh, i dont know about adding gta4 to that list. i think we can all agree that it was fun, but very over hyped..

JsonHenry6092d ago

agreed. I played it for a couple of hours and sent it right back to gamefly. Same game as GTA3 only with prettier graphics.. NEXT!

SeanScythe6092d ago

"one of the best games of the year" does not equal "Best Game of the Year".

CliffordM Bleszinski6092d ago

gears 2 will own lbp. dont get me wrong lbp is a great and innovative game, but gears 2 is better.

Electricear6092d ago

I think Gears 2 will be a good game... scratch that a great game, but it's doubtful there will be anything innovative enough in it to justify it earning GOTY. Yes it has more stuff on screen than Gears 1, and it looks like the graphics have been upped a notch, but at this point I've not seen anything that has made gears 2 stand out in my mind more than other games. Honestly Resistance 2 has made greater strides in catching my eye than gears 2 has at this point, but even Resistance 2 doesn't have the industry buzz that two other games had this year.

Truthfully the only two games that had almost full industry buzz this year were Spore and Little Big Planet. Of those two Spore fell flat on its face with it's draconian DRM and 5 "seen it before stages" where the only real innovation was it's creature creator. This leaves Little Big Planet which has for the most part lived up to the hype, and raised platformers to a new level with user crated content. It's because Little Big Planet is both new and innovative that it should win GOTY.

Sarcasm6092d ago

Comparing Gears of War 2 to LBP is like comparing David Hasselhoff to Bob Sagat.

Doesn't quite work here folks.

Why not just leave each game to their respective genre and be happy. Gears 2 will be kick ass, LBP will be fresh air.

I'm getting both, because both deserve the attention.

EA Cut Dead Space's Marketing Budget to Pour Into Mirror's Edge Due to Mock Review Scores

Former Visceral Games devs reveal Dead Space's marketing budget was cut in favor of Mirror's Edge because of mock review scores.

Knightofelemia175d ago (Edited 175d ago )

I wish EA would just release a DS2 remake. DS is my favorite horror game and DS2 is the best one in the franchise. But because DS1 failed to meet certain numbers EA scrapped the DS2 remake. SH2 remake was great rumors are Konami might be asking for another SH remake. The RE2 remake was great EA just needs to give it another try. But all they seem to do is shitty sports games that are no different from the year before. Change a few players, add different uniform colours, maybe change a team logo. Wash, rinse, repeat.

goken175d ago

Agreed. DS was great. But DS2 was even better. Would love to see a DS2 remake, though I would love to see a DS4 even more.
The problem with EA is they make easy $ from the slight changes to their sports titles like football FC games (whatever it’s called nowadays). People just lap that sh1t up.
Comparatively, games like DS which don’t sell 10s of millions, can’t sell them team player add ons and all the like, would seem a hassle to make and unappealing comparatively. Especially when you consider that most EA non sport titles haven’t actually performed well recently.

Dark Souls 2, Darksiders 2, Dead Space 2, Death Stranding 2, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2

chicken_in_the_corn175d ago

The Dead space remake was so good. Better than the original. Shame they won't remake 2.

__y2jb175d ago

I loved the original dead space but the remake I just found boring. Game design has moved on and the game really showed its age, just small area encounters repeated again and again.

I bought Dead Space during launch window and I never bought a Mirror's Edge game .

Inverno174d ago

Then they went on to screw both games over.

UnbreakableAlex174d ago

I'd rather see a new and great Mirrors Edge than another boring Dead Space.

EA Japan Exec Criticises Japanese Ratings Board

An executive of Electronic Arts Japan has criticised the Japanese video game ratings board for allowing upcoming action game Stellar Blade to be released uncensored while EA's own Dead Space was banned in the country.

CrimsonWing69423d ago

He’s got a point. If a game is M-Rated, which is the equivalent of an R rating, I don’t get why you need to censor anything. The rating is the indicator of the content and the age appropriate. If it’s appropriate for adults… why treat them like children? 🤷‍♂️

Eonjay422d ago (Edited 422d ago )

This is about gore... not about anything sexual. And specifically I think it is about the realistic depiction of gore. Unfortunately I don't know the nuance of the CERO board or how it is relevant their specific culture (as a prohibition on gore may transcend age) so I hesitate to make a statement. Can anyone else provide insight to what kind of gore is considered unacceptable?

CrimsonWing69422d ago (Edited 422d ago )

Yea, I know this is about gore, but thanks for pointing that out.

My point still stands, if a game is essentially rated for a mature audience then why censor for them as if they’re too young to view it? Makes no sense.

To answer your question: Decapitation, dismemberment, like… anything gore. They have been censoring that since CERO was established. Look up RE4 chainsaw decapitation or any MK games that made it there.

Cacabunga422d ago

EA Japan? Wtf never heard of that

ZwVw422d ago

Yet, the Oneechanbara series (y'know, the game with half-naked samurai females slicing up zombies to bloody pieces) get released in Japan uncensored.

The CERO ratings board is an equilibrium.

Smellsforfree421d ago

This confuses me since I've seen so many gory Japanese movies and anime. For example, Battle Royale.

gold_drake422d ago

definitely has a point.

but .. its japan. are we really surprised?

VersusDMC422d ago

I don't know if the EA executive is going off the one close up of an arm being cut off in the demo. Maybe it's uncensored because it's the arm of a cyborg or it doesn't happen that often (didn’t see EVE dismemberment when killed in the demo) .

In the states there's a certain amount of swear words allowed to a PG13 movie before it is deemed R. So maybe it's the same in Japan for gore?

Eonjay422d ago

Yes I think you may be on to something. The violence is gory but I wouldn't call it gruesome.

Retroman422d ago

Ea Japan please make Knack 3
in the future

Eonjay422d ago (Edited 422d ago )

Does EA Japan actually make games at all? Or are they just a regional publisher?

Retroman421d ago

I'm sorry Japan Studio made Knack
