Nintendo Switch reveals information about the digital sales of 3rd party developed games on the Nintendo Switch.
It’s been decades since a lot of third parties could legitimately say they find a lot of success on Nintendo consoles “In the past, players in the United States have primary purchased physical copies of games and stayed clear of the digital offerings of the eShop.” And for good reason. - Digital discounts were never as outstanding on Nintendo’s storefronts as they were on rival competitors - There was not as much personal incentive to get a game digitally on Wii Shopping Channel & eShop as it was to get it on PSN, XBL & Steam. - Nintendo’s digital storefronts didn’t offer as much cross-buy games as was offered on other rival services. - Nintendo isn’t as accommodating for digital refunds as their competitors. - Nintendo’s DRM was very limiting(ie digital content being locked to the hardware instead of an account) compared to the competition. - Some digital games were larger than what was offered on the standard internal storage. Most consumers felt they were better off buying games on Nintendo platforms physically. Their buying habits seem to be changing with Switch.

Because the eShop on Wii U and 3DS operates on different OS til late 2015 where it was combined. I just got a discount for Star Ocean 4 on PSN just last week. It’s not an impossible task to do. Even still 3DS & Wii U didn’t a lot of cross buy games afterwards. Switch also doesn’t have cross-buy games with those platforms like PS4 had with PS3 & Vita right out of the gate. The author of this article himself even suggested the storage capacity as a possibility. I found it appropriate to list it among the other examples.
Switch eShop is different and doesn't operate on the same source. There is no way to do it. Everything Switch does is separate from Wii U and 3DS. Only way anything will be connected is through USB, SD Card or Apps like Poke Bank in transferring Pokemon. Who doesn't buy storage for a portable device let alone any devices that enables it. Anyone who don't buy it obviously don't plan to use it for the long term. Not only that 96% of Switch games don't take up space on system memory or micro sd card.
That is the reason people felt more compelled to buy digital games on PSN than on eShop. That seems to have changed with Switch as some games have notably sold better on it than on other services, but it wasn’t he case with Wii U & 3DS. I’m talking mostly about Wii, DSi, 3DS & Wii U here. I just brought up Switch lacking cross-buy to point out how Nintendo still doesn’t fully embrace cross-buy. Anytime a game was offered on those aforementioned platforms both physically and digitally consumers were more prompted to pick up the game physically for the above reasons. This attitude seems to be changing with Switch though.

People also need to take into account the first time lots of independent developers are supporting Nintendo platforms now that they actually have an infrastructure that makes sense so a lot of the smaller titles that only exist digitally can make that number rise if they actually don't have physical counterparts.
I really don't underatand why your digital download software have to be locked with hardware. Isn't this the same " you can't borrow someone else's software" DRM on the Xbox One? That is pretty stupid. On PS3 and PS4 we have one game in five different hardware units accross the globe!
Switch doesn't lock anything on hardware.
