Is the traditional hard drive doomed?
Short answer: no; not if Western Digital and Hitachi have anything to say about it.
It's true that solid-state drives based on flash memory have come a long ways-witness Intel's X25 SSD drives. It's also true that an 80GB drive will set you back about $600. Meanwhile, you can pick up the spiffy new Western Digital 1TB RE3 drive for about $210. So if you require lots of storage at affordable prices, hard drives are really the only practical solution.
