A Discount’s Nice, but PSVR Needs Full Games

Unfortunately, even with PSVR’s decent library of titles, and a handful of announced games, there just aren’t many compelling full-fledged gaming experiences coming in the near future. That’s what Sony needs to focus on.

It needs games for sure but i really dont even like putting the thing on.. Its more trouble than what its worth to me.. Im not investing in VR again until its a smooth 4k experience with a very comfortable headset

Fantomex2281d ago

I'm with you. I tried PSVR more than once. The games are RIGs and Skyrim. Skyrim being one of my all time favorite games in VR would get me on board with the VR bandwagon. Instead it wasn't like I was expecting it to be. My neck got sore rather quickly from wearing the helmet for less than 10 minutes, and then feel really nauseous 15-30 minutes playing the game. Discomfort aside, the image is really blurry from being it too low res, killing the immersion for me.

Great idea, but unfortunately the tech simply isn't there. Not only that, Skyrim is already an old game. VR is a fad that is fading away like other past fads did. Once all the high end VR devices are found on 80% off clearance shelves, it will then be forgotten. After that, maybe give it another 10-15 years before it makes a return. Playing Skyrim on those future VR devices would be like playing TES: Arena in VR today.

InTheLab2280d ago

The tech is fine. Skyrim just isn't the game it should be. It's old and the graphics were awful when the fame launched on ps3 and little has changed in VR.

Now Driveclub is fantastic in VR as is Resident Evil.

Now, as for your neck, you might need to get it checked out. The headset isn't that heavy and the cords do not get in your way.

And as a rule I never use it more than an hour.

Notellin2280d ago

Your neck got sore from a headset weighing a pound and 5 ounces????

We can tell you never played any sport with a helmet and definitely have never put on hard hat.

KillBill2280d ago

@Notellin - you obviously have not put on a hard hat if you think it weighs a pound and 5 ounces. They are normally around 14 ounces and they sit evenly on the head. VR is not in the least comfortable for any length of time.

OB1Biker2280d ago (Edited 2280d ago )

It's a bit like swimming. You need to go progressively. First time a few games made me uncomfortable. Also not everyone enjoy the same type of VR games.
Just an example first time I tried Eve Valkyrie I hated the controls and feeling nauseous. Later I read you could change the controls so I bought it. Result is I got used to the original control except for one remapping the boost And after a couple days could barrel roll for hours with no problem apart from going wow when removing the headset

But PSVR is the most comfortable design there is. Are you saying even that isnt enough?

DivineAssault 2280d ago

Its not comfortable enough for me personally.. I dont like the wires or anything either.. VR just isnt my thing.. I tried it, i supported it, and it isnt working out.. Nothing beats just popping in a disc and grabbing a controller.. All that other stuff are unnecessary hurdles..

Knushwood Butt2280d ago

Popping in a disc sounds lika an unnecessary hurdle.

thats what i been psvr needs to be powerful im sure on the ps4 pro only out put the resolution from 1080p to 1440p well maybe around 1200p for psvr guess we will have to wait for psvr 2 for that

ABBAJESUS2279d ago

Eyetracking is the next big thing. Doesn't need as much gpu power as now.

NXFather2279d ago

You might be correct about 4k vr but, can you do one correct push up?

VR is for sure a game changer that's here to stay. But it for sure needs full length awesome games like resident evil and Skyrim!

NecrumOddBoy2280d ago

For gen 1 out the gate I think we're doing fairly well. I'm pretty excited for Moss next week and hopefully Starchild soon. The inpatient being a disappointment was kind of a bummer. It was nice finally to pick up VR world's just too be able to play the London Heist

Loktai2280d ago

I agree its pretty good. Its not a console in itself at this point but as an accessory for those willing to spend the money to adopt this tech at this state and drive the market its actually pretty good.

As some who drives a ton for a living I had NO motion sickness and NO issue with comfort of the headset, moving my head or anything else. Its true the amount of content needs work but there IS a ton of content. Doom , RE7, Skyrim, tons of smaller experiences, tons of cool shit like Accounting+ and Superhot and overall in my opinion its a really great value for what you're getting. People may demand a high end "4k" experience in VR but... I dont think most of those demanding those upgrades would spend the money needed to get them. Most PC gamers dont even have 4k monitors yet and its been possible for a LONG time to get them... because of cost .

ApocalypseShadow2280d ago

Terrible writing. The discounts are for those looking to get more games for their library. And, for those getting into vr, they have games to buy after spending money on the headset which can be considered expensive.

PSVR has full length games right *now* and more scheduled to come in the near future and down the line. Full length is subjective. Games like skyrim are ports. And games as awesome as RE7 are barely longer than other experiences on the platform.

Then the writer discredits far point as being awful. Which is his opinion. But it's not shared by everybody. It was a good, first Gen, lengthy shooter supported by an awesome peripheral. But the writer ignores that. And ignores it's multiplayer. Or other games with multiplayer that lengthen a title's worth.

Is PSVR perfect? No. But most first platforms aren't. But they get better. Just like regular gaming starts slow at launch but builds with better games down the line when developers get used to programming.

VR gaming isn't regular gaming and shouldn't be expected to be the same. PSVR may feel light, but is definitely heavier than a hat. So, why expect gamers to sit hours with it on like a regular game? Common sense. Developers aren't going to be making games like GTA with millions of dollars spent on a smaller community. Again, common sense. So, expect shorter experiences until the community grows. That's why the discounts are there. To grow the community. Common sense.

You would think the writer would know better.

Death2280d ago

Common sense doesn’t really apply here. Everyone has a different perception and expectations of what VR should be. I personally loved the immersion but I hated the restrictions VR has and didn’t like going from incredibly clear 4K to the graininess of VR. Watching movies on the big screen on PSVR sounded cool too, but the reality is it looks terrible. The jitteriness due to the cheap tracking was also a big turn off. Vive and Rift has much better tracking, but they suffer from a lack of content as well.

Eliminate the wires, lose the graininess and screen door effect and more people will buy. More “real” games will go a long way too.

Chevalier2280d ago

'More' is subjective. PSVR has easily outsold its competitors. So yeah 'common sense' does apply and yeah in a perfect world the wires etc are gone, but, at what cost? Same with the screen as well, sure the screen could be 4k etc. , but then you would be here complaining about price because it would skyrocket to implement those things.

Death2280d ago

You can sell poorly and still outsell your competition in a failing market.

ApocalypseShadow2280d ago

Death, the argument is about psvr having longer experiences. Not a comparison between pc vr and console vr. So, your argument is weak. I could compare where ever you live or car you drive and find something better than what you got. But it would be off topic. Pc graphics, hardware and peripherals are expected to be better. But the price is higher than consoles. No regular console gamer is going to spend $800-$1000 on vr for a $200-$250 console. COMMON SENSE.

Psvr has lengthy games now and lengthy games coming out based on the size of the community. No developer is going to spend millions with no guarantee of a return. Why does Rockstar wait to produce their games and not release at launch? Because there wouldn't be enough consoles on the market at launch to support a game that took 100-200 million to make. COMMON SENSE.

Fun and replay ability create length. Not games with numerous, artifical fetch quests. I have games I've played over and over since atari that aren't 100 hour long games. Why? Because of fun. And they were so fun, I played again and again.

Once psvr does get these supposed "lengthy" games, the writer will then complain about prices of vr games as they will all be $59-$64. And he'll be hoping for those **discounts** that he's bashing.

Death2280d ago

@AS,

Your common sense still isn’t “common”. Length and quality of games applies to all VR formats. Like you said, the user base is small so devs are targeting all platforms. Sony is giving PSVR minimal support like they did with Vita when it didn’t sell like they had hoped. Third parties aren’t getting behind VR much either leaving development to indie studios which ship these short experiences.

Rockstar released both GTA3 and GTA4 shortly after the PS2 and PS3 launch. GTA5 released at the end of the PS3 lifecycle and beginning of the PS4’s. Your common sense is based on what you want to believe and not what actual happened.

The VR and console prices you lead with are also greatly exaggerated.

ApocalypseShadow2279d ago (Edited 2279d ago )

gta3 and gta4 released after a good amount of systems were in the market. Gta5 released when there were millions of ps3s on the market. Then they ported it to ps4 because the game was already done. They didn't have to start from scratch.

Indie games are fine as I wouldn't want to see the same developers releasing the same tired franchises on the platform. As for Sony, they are supporting the platform. But if most of their 1st parties were making vr games and not regular games, gamers would complain about that. And we'd have another kinect. That's why they have London studio and north west studio to make games. And other 1st party add ons like gt and Wipeout. 150+ games and experiences in less than 2 years and more coming is good for a platform that's normally $399. Are you expecting 500 games in one year? For an add on?Common sense.

Exaggerated? What's th cost of a quality pc and a rift or vive? You may need to count again. A good pc and headset would set you back at least $800-$1000. Common sense death. Don't try to fool yourself or us.

This is all pointless drivel. Nobody cares about PSVR. It will become mainstream when Sony drops the price of PSVR to $1. I'm all in when that happens.

Evolve2280d ago

I just bought RE7 GE and I can't wait to play it using the PSVR! But most importantly for me and the one game I'm super excited to play is Ace Combat 7. It's taking so long, man :(

finally!, being waiting for this game since its announcement some years ago, so many objects on screen using physics running at 60 fps is always mesmerizing to see.

SullysCigar397d ago

Played the demo on PSVR2 - it's trippy as hell!

Knushwood Butt397d ago (Edited 397d ago )

Awesome. I had this on my PS wishlist and was going to buy it Day 1. Seen as I have Extra, now I don't need to!
PSVR2 support too.

Abnor_Mal397d ago

Platformers are not really my thing, but I guess I can try it out on PlusExtra. In VR2 to boot.

fsfsxii397d ago

Finally! been badgering the devs on twitter for awhile now. Demo put me in a trance and i loved it.
