It makes me sad to think about how in a few decides even many of the great single-player games of today will be a mess on the used market. They won't have all the patches and the consolemakers may not have a way to download patches for games that old. Sure there will be ways to get the patches on the internet, but 10-20 years from now if you buy a post-PS2/GC/Xbox console and some used games, if you just pop the disk in you'll be stuck with an unpatched version of the game.

I believe PS plus games need an internet connection to be played.

But the point is that, if all software is online only, and even if you can download it, you will not keep your collection downloaded. Than when something like this happens and you really want to play a game that is not downloaded what do you do? Nothing. You won't be able to play.

Being offline on a console or PC doesn't stop you from playing digital games anymore than playing those same games in disc form.

If you buy a digital game that is normally standalone or has network features you are not prevented from playing that game if the network goes down. Obviously, any network features (eg.the Souls/Bloodborne series) of the game will not work but everything else will.

Games like PUBG, Neverwinter, Overwatch etc (digital or media) are effectively dead during a network or server outage.

Like it or not it makes no difference if you install your game via physical media or digital download that game will only be impacted by a network or server outage if it requires a network connection. In other words "online only" games are effectively a platter or wasted disk space if you lose your network connection.

BTW. I can still play PS+ games during a network outage providing they have single player or campaign capabilities.

As an aside I have spent less than $300 USD on over 20 games (PSN sales can save you a considerable amount of money) and have over 60 PS+ games (ie. Free) full games in my library including some AAA games. I only have five games that came on physical media.

Remember PSN like XBox Live are worldwide and are a network of multiple linked servers (ie. The Cloud). What happens in one set of time zones may not impact other timezones.

Well, at least game pass on Xbox don't require a constant connection in order to play. The games are downloaded on thr HDD and can be played OFFLINE. Maybe Sony should consider doing that with their PS Now service so when downtime like this occurs, their subscribers can continue to play.

And transforming PS Now to a download service like Game Pass is not all that easy. It would need a PS3 emulator for the PS4, and a PS3 AND PS4 emulator for PC... Not gonna happen....

They can, however, one day introduce something else which could be similar to Game Pass, who knows...

I do agree that PSNow should allow games to be digitally downloaded and played off the PS4's storage in the same that PS+ does. Basically Software as a Service (SaaS).

Unfortunately, global network services are still not good enough to support PSNow for most people and for the US now that Network Neutrality has been removed it is "possible" that streaming services will be severely impacted. If you are old enough to vote now is the time to start taking an interest in politics otherwise you don't have the right to criticize and this would suit many politicians.

PS Now is a streaming service, NoPeace. You're not running the games. You don't even have the games. They do nearly everything remotely. All you do is send game inputs and get back a movie of the results after the two-way lag.

My biggest grief about PlayStation: Server speed and reliability. Microsoft probably has a team of hackers set up to do DDoS attacks and otherwise wreak havok—kidding. (Not kidding—but kidding.) 🤨

Server speed is either a local server issue (some CDN providers Sony uses aren't up to snuff in some areas) OR an issue on your end. I download with full speed of my connection (300mbit down). Wasn't the case until a few weeks back when I got a new cable modem from my ISP. Before that I had to use a proxy server running on my Linux server at home to get full download speeds.

I have used a proxy for PlayStation 4 before—it helps amazingly. Could this weak upload/download issue be avoided by going with a hardline to the PlayStation do you think? Also, if the speed is improved with a proxy what does that indicate?

Put simply: Slow downloads and Share Play are an unusually common occurrence—so I'm fairly confident something is off on Sony's end, to some extent

I was an XBOX fanatic from mid-cycle through the XBOX 0(riginal) all the way till the 360 and the 'shock heard 'round the world' at E3 in 'thirteen regarding required always online status for any prolonged gameplay. (I grew up in a poor, rural Appalachian town which suffered from horrible Internet service. Imagining gamers in similar areas could had been shut-out from current gen gaming (not to mention the possibility it could had started a mainstream movement for all gens and all system makers going forward) I immediately washed my hands of my dedicated choice for gaming and reluctantly took up the depressingly symmetrically buttoned PlayStation controller.

A cable to your PS4 is always a very good idea to get stable connection speeds and less lag during multiplayer games! Highly recommend it.

Apparently there is a negotiation bug in the PS4's firmware and/or with some of the servers certain CDN providers use (or router/modem settings) which causes the PS4 to select a teeny tiny packet size causing downloads to go way slower than they should.

A firmware update a few months back seemed to have solved it in most instances and my download speeds without a proxy went up, but still had the occasional slow connection. The new modem+router seemed to have solved that issue now as well.

Weirdest part also was that here in the Netherlands most people have excellent internet speeds and sometimes I was in a party chat with others who downloaded patches within a minute or two and mine said needing several hours. Especially weird considering that I once checked that that person was connected to servers in Amsterdam, same as me (and I was actually closer!). So not everyone has the same issue.

Seems to be a weird combo of factors causing it. And because Sony uses many different CDN providers all over the world it's probably a lot harder for them to track down the real issue, while MS only uses their own servers that are all configured exactly the same making it easier, a problem in that configuration would be for all users, not for a few...

So yeah, XBL does have the benefit of MS having their own server parks, which makes sense for them since they use them for way more things than just XBL. Wouldn't make sense for Sony to do the same, although they could try to use only one CDN and cloud server provider but am sure there's a costs reason for doing it this way....

It's just the difference between Sony and MS, MS does software and IT services as their core business, Sony has hardware as their core business, both have their plusses and minusses I suppose for us consumers.

Being on AT&T U-Verse at 50MB, the sole inhabitant at my home, and in the Greater Los Angeles area I'd think the connection would be solid enough (other than an occasional hick-up). I'll give a hardline a shot, though.

To be fair, considering the staggering growth PS has enjoyed over the past six-to-eight (especially two-to-three) years I can understand there being growing pains. Still, with PlayStation Vue, cloud saving, PlayStation Now (across multiple platforms), and multiple other PSN tech it's probably time for SONY to make the jump to server logistics same (or better) as Microsoft has done. If there's one thing XBOX has nailed from gen-one it's networking. In fact XBOX practically set (and continues to) the standard of high-speed [see: useable and enjoyable] online gaming and gaming services.

I imagine holiday sales were so astonishing for the PlayStation 4 that it became the ultimate strain test for PSN 'Server Central.' Any case, it's either sorted by now or will be directly.

Hell, I wouldn't put it past crooked MickeymouseSoft to have had sic'd their cloak-and-dagger DDoS crew to coincide with the God of War release date announcement.
