Clearer Art Direction Helps Super Mario Galaxy Shine Brighter Than Super Mario Odyssey

Super Mario Odyssey ends up feeling more like Kingdom Hearts than the eloquent balance of Super Mario Galaxy. In Galaxy, the universe is mysterious but full of wonder. You never know where a Power Star is hiding. In Super Mario Odyssey, Power Moons are everywhere you look; from the tippy-top of a waterfall to being dug up by a puppy in a vast desert. Power Moons are hardly scarce; they're plentiful. You're rewarded for digging into the corners of Odyssey's worlds with Power Moons, or worse, just with coins.

Super Mario Galaxy is a delight to explore over its many hours because no land is too daunting or large, and they all feel uniform in their focus. No two galaxies look the same, but you wouldn't gaze at them and think they were plucked from another game in the slightest either. In Super Mario Odyssey, the opposite is true, to an unfortunate degree.

The issue with Galaxy I had is unlike Odyssey you feel more restricted...go past a certain launch star and you can't back track unless you restart the level

Odyssey has that freedom like Sunshine and 64 where you can go everywhere.

I'm enjoying Odyssey more because of that alone, reminds me of 64 and it's a great new Mario title

* Galaxy games....I can't get lost or sucked into those games. I get distracted having to move the wii remotes and it takes me out of the focus of the game. It's annoying and feels like a chore to play.

Galaxy 1&2 are two my least favorite games because of this.

Some great level design, but there needed to be more levels like the Beach Bowl.....that actually felt like a Mario 64 map, rather than the rest of the stuff that felt like 3D world stuff.

Galaxy games are overrated because of motion controls, and the dumb little micro planets. Get dizzy just thinking about it.

Odyssey is a much better game.

mikeslemonade2681d ago

Both games are overrated but Galaxy is even more overrated.

Prince_TFK2681d ago

@mike

At this point we know that all Nintendo games are overrated to you.

Please, just stop posting man.

I fricking loved Galaxy especially Galaxy 2 (got nearly every single star in the game), I got used to the motion controls and the music in the game was so awesome. For me Galaxy 2 was in my top 5 games ever but Odyssey has now taken that spot. The freedom to do whatever I like in the game, to go wherever I like and the variety of power moons makes the game so glorious. I play in handheld mode and find whenever I want to just pop on the Switch for an hour, I end up playing for 3+ hours and clocking the battery. One hell of a game and easily one of the top games of this generation.

Odyssey is more like Mario 64, which I much more prefer. I actually didn't like Galaxy. It was too restrictive. You didn't have time to appreciate the beauty of the levels. I prefer being dropped into a world and them basically saying "find the stars/moons and have fun."

paddy952682d ago

Galaxy is the only 3d Mario I have never completed. Motion gimmicks and it restrictive linear structure made it feel a little dull for me. Kind of of like 3d world witch I hated. Open areas with multiple objectives like 64, Sunshine and Odyssey is clearly the better way to go. I never felt attached to any of the locations in Galaxy as you just run past then so quickly.

TheEnigma3132682d ago

I agree. I couldn't get into the motion controls. I wish they had an option for the pro controller.

-Foxtrot2681d ago

If Nintendo bring it to the the online store they’d have to have controls for the Switch

Pozzle2681d ago (Edited 2681d ago )

I don't even really consider a "proper" 3D Mario...if that makes any sense. Sure, the graphics are 3D. But it plays like a classic 2D Mario game; enter a level, progress forward, finish level. There's no option to explore a world or complete a task in multiple ways. You only have one way to go, and that's forward.

Not that that's a bad thing. But I think a lot of people were expecting an upgraded version of Super Mario 64 when they first heard that Galaxy would feature...well...galaxies. Then when it was revealed to be a linear game, that disappointed a lot of people.

letsa_go2682d ago

I like the art style better on Galaxy, but I think Odyssey is a more full featured game. I think it is funny that all these years, we have been asking for a realistic zelda, and cartoony mario, and they keep doing the opposite. Zelda is cell shaded and cartoony, whereas Mario Odyssey has realistic looking environments in like half the levels. Like what is with the realistic t-rex and dragon? Still a fun game to play though.

RommyReigns2679d ago (Edited 2679d ago )

I was worried about what Dark Souls Remastered would look like on the Switch, then I remembered that Dragon and the detail in the Ruined Kingdom and I think Dark Souls would look awesome on the Switch.

Loadedklip2681d ago

I prefer Galaxy and 3D World because those games are true platformers with level after level after level after level of just fantastic, super well thought out platforming level design. The Odyssey/64/Sunshine style ... these are amazing games ... but they are so different in that they are not pure platformers but instead a hybrid of exploration/puzzle/platforming . Great! ... but not what I PERSONALLY prefer for Mario. I began with Mario in 2D and to me ... Mario is at his best when he is focused on pure platforming be in 2D or 3D graphically. It's all subjective.

LonDonE2681d ago

Thank you, i agree with you 100%, its nice to find some one who thinks the same way i do with regards to the 3d mario games, i felt very underwhelmed with super mario odyssey!
The moons just did not feel satisfying to find and collect because they are just spamming moons over the map without too much thought, i LOVED the galaxy games and 3d world.
Mario 64 is much more superior to odyssey because all you got was the title of the star at the start of the stage and you had to go in and find it, which is similar to how galaxy 1/2 done it, i enjoy this way more, but in odyssey i just did not feel like the moons were satisfying to collect.

It feels like they just randomly placed the moons over map without any intricate thought for the most part.
I would love a mario galaxies 1 and 2 remake, running in native 1080p with updated textures and anti aliasing to smoothen those rough edges, i swear i would buy a galaxies remake in a heart beat!

Hell even just ports of both on switch with improved resolution and no jaggies would be perfect!
Its some thing which bugs me about nintendo, there are so many timeless classics i would rebuy if they were remade, maybe nintendo could give a company like blue point games to do the remakes?
But nintendo refuse to do them.

Loadedklip2673d ago

I'm cool with open world / sandbox Mario ... but yea ... give me a sequel to 3D World (but add online this time) or Galaxy 3 next.

That would make me happier.

Super Mario Odyssey Turns Seven - Ranking the 3D Mario Games

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "With the Switch getting on in years and the prospect of a new Nintendo console growing closer, now seems like an excellent time to take a look back at one of its mascot’s two big evolutionary lines, particularly since we now find ourselves in the longest wait ever between 3D Mario games. Today marks the seven year anniversary for the release of Super Mario Odyssey, and with no full new entry in sight, it comfortably beats the roughly six year wait between Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, which should also be good news to anybody who broke a mirror that day.

3D Mario has delighted fans since 1996, maintaining an astonishing level of quality and bringing innovations not just to the 3D platformer genre, but gaming as a whole. Needless to say, it’s a hard task to rank a series where every entry is beloved, but I shall nevertheless undertake this risky venture with my head held high. Wish me luck."

One of the worst marios.. i hated the fact it was only about finding the moons and very repetitive with the same bosses. There is no exploration in this one.
Galaxy 2 is still unmatched

TiredGamer211d ago

I played, completed, and enjoyed Mario Odyssey, but I tend to agree that I don't think it's the best 3D Mario. There was sense of sameness that prevailed after the first couple of worlds... not in the levels, environments, or aesthetics, but in the routine of each world. It just felt like each new environment was just the beginning of another checklist of moons to acquire, and the sheer number of them took away the sense of accomplishment I got from the stars in Mario 64 and the like. I can't exactly put my finger on why that is. Galaxy gets my nod as the best one.

Cacabunga211d ago

I enjoyed it too but i won’t even place it in my top10 mario games.. as you said you are just looking for stars and that irritating music everytime you find one.
Also the bosses are pretty much the same from begging to end. I would have have like some koopalings instead of these dumb useless rabbits

Chocoburger211d ago

I played a little of this game and freakin' LOVED it! But I forced myself to stop because I hadn't played Galaxy 2, which I've been playing every day for the past week. Cripes, Galaxy 2 is way better than I expected it to be! Even though I dislike the Wiimote and nunchuck controls, and it annoyed me a lot with Galaxy 1, part 2 just feels better and slightly less gimmicky when it comes to the controls.

Profchaos211d ago

Sunshine at number 7 no way. I get it's not perfect but it deserves better to date there has not been another 3d Mario that's managed to capture that same movement it's the most acrobatic feeling Mario to date.

It's by and large better than 3d land/world and I'd argue that galaxy 2 didn't offer any trie innovation it was essentially a DLC pack to 1

Personally it's
1) Mario 64
2) Mario Sunshine
3) Mario galaxy
4) Mario Odyssey
5) galaxy 2
6) Bowser fury
7) 3d land/ world.

Could Super Mario Odyssey 2 Be Luigi's New Big Adventure?

Super Mario Odyssey was the Nintendo Switch’s debut for the franchise, and we saw our red-hatted friend don a new piece of gear that doubled as his new sidekick, Cappy. With so many characters getting some prominent screen time, Luigi felt completely uninvited to this party. That’s why we can’t help but think that Nintendo has something special cooked up for him in Super Mario Odyssey 2.

Nope, Luigi is destined to stick with mansions.

I hope they move on from Odyssey. It is my least favorite 3D Mario game. If felt shorter and a huge step down from Mario Galaxy 1 & 2.

Becuzisaid304d ago

I was happy for a more free roam 3D Mario, it's been forever since there was one like this, but I agree Galaxy 2 was a better game. Galaxy 1 I didn't like as much oddly.

The 10 Biggest Nintendo Direct Moments of the Switch Generation

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Last week Nintendo held this year's surprisingly packed not-E3 Direct; with a full schedule for this year and a vague promise of a console successor next year, it's very possible that we've now seen our final Nintendo Switch Direct, or at least one with major first party reveals. That makes this a good time to sit back and reflect on a generation of Direct moments, from the shocking and surprising, to the joyous and exhilarating - and, quite often, all at once."
