How Did the Xbox One Hit the Reset Button in 2017

As we end the year, we look at what Microsoft was able to accomplish in 2017. Was Microsoft able, to successfully hit reset on their Xbox One line of consoles, and focus on bringing people back to the brand. Are we excited for what the future might bring for Microsoft, or is it too little too late?

It doesn’t look like anything has been reset. Microsoft’s first party output is still lacking, sales seem to be on a downward incline, and they still haven’t had a new flagship AAA IP thus far this generation.

At this point I have no idea what MS is doing. Maybe it was all intended misdirection....? Release the X this year and get people to talk about it while they continue to work on stuff nobody is allowed to discuss because it was too early. They don't want to reveal something too soon only to have it get canned....

I'm optimistic to a point but seriously they have to be doing something more than what we see. It's a physical impossibility that this is as good as it gets. I swear they are purposely riding the wave of negativity towards something else... it almost seems certain they are planning something but what that is is anybody's guess.

Well, the thing is Phil basically said that 2 projects were just started after the poor reception of their indie focused E3. But the thing is games take a really long time if to make if you want them to be able to compete with the big games these days. So that's like 4 - 5 years out,

By xbox standards next year is ok (again by xbox standards). But whats after 2018? There has basically been zero talk of any other projects beyond 2018. I mean probably a Halo game and another Gears of War and annualized Forza games. But lets be honest these days it seems unlikely Master Chief is going to have the pull outside of the hardcore xbox fans the way it used too. Especially when it has to compete with Sony and Nintendo's heavy hitters.

That's my take and I honestly tried to just give my opinion with out the console preference thing this time.

They're doing what they've always done. Been focused more on business models rather than entertainment value. Certain rather than hopeful that all they need is a platform, and content will see to itself.

Games as a service is not the "greatness" that thr gaming industry should be striving to achieve.

Destiny 1&2 are proof of how flawed that system is. Anthem will be another example of why that won't be what makes the industry great.

The one area that ms doesn't seem to understand is that singleplayer games are the lifeblood of the industry

I have said it multiple times, I fortunate enough to own all-three systems. I love MLB the Show, Zelda: BotW, Mario Kart, Last of Us, etc. etc. I find myself coming back to my Xbox One (now X). There are aspects of the system that are not mentioned in this video, and hey are big selling point. For one, game sharing, my brother and I save $$$ by owning an Xbox, are catalog of games dwarfs my PS4/Switched combined. Then there is the EA app, say what you want about EA and I have setup myself up on a cycle where I only by one/two sports games a year (Madden, and the other being NBA2k). I have had both the PS and Xbox systems for multiple years/generations, and I find the menu screens to be much more user friendly and the Xbox Community way more social.

What is forgotten about when talking about exclusives is: Does this exclusive matter to you? Most of the time, for me, it doesn't, so I go with what I actually believe to be the better entertainment device; which is the Xbox One X

I don't know much about game sharing but it's definitely possible to share physical copies of games on PS4. I know some people that do game sharing digitally on PS4 as well so I don't know how it is different on Xbox One.

The EA app is absolutely irrelevant to me personally. I haven't bought a single EA game this console-generation. I think the last EA game I bought was Dead Space 3 in 2013. With the recent shift towards multiplayer-based microtransaction-heavy games I have a hard time naming a game publisher that I have less interest in than EA.

And even if I'd agree with you about the menus, they are just a means to get to the games 90% of the time for me. There are definitely a lot of improvements Sony could and frankly should make to the interface and the Playstation store but how can that ever be the deciding factor for choosing a games-console?

I’m gonna have to say no. The X might’ve had decent launch sales, but the majority of its purchasers were people buying their 3rd or 4th Xbone consoles, all while the S has seen abysmal sales throughout the rest of the year. MS talks about how playerbase is more important to them than hardware numbers, yet they’re trying so hard to convince everyone to spend $500 on a X, all while their playerbase is going nowhere.

IMO they only reset the generation for themselves because everything they have done seems to only benefit gamers that have invested in MS's ecosystem. MS made too many mistakes this gen and they paid for it, if the goal of the X was to double down of existing MS gamers then they accomplished their goal, but if it was to bring in new gamers to buy into their console then I think they have failed.
