Dreams For PS4 Is Hard To Explain, But It Looks Brilliant I Kotaku

Keza MacDonald from Kotaku “ I can say without hyperbole that I have never seen anything remotely like Dreams in the 12 years that I’ve been visiting game studios. It has the potential to inspire millions in the art of game creation, in a way that goes much deeper than LittleBigPlanet or even Minecraft. On a less grandiose, but perhaps just as important level, it’s a way for any player to reconnect with their creativity, on as big or small a scale as they like.“

Can't seem to get excited for another "Build it yourself" type game. They just don't do anything for me, personally. I'd rather have a fully crafted experience then slogging through a bunch of crappy user created stuff. Goes for this game, Mario Maker, Project Spark... eh.

Give me Ghost of Tsushima, Spidey over a game like Dreams any day.

Cohagen4201282d ago

You realize Dreams is going to have a campaign, just like LBP 1, 2 and Tearaway.

madforaday1282d ago

Also, some of the best levels were created level which were super cool in LBP. I am NOT a fan of creating things, but playing cool created worlds I am all in!

Jinger1282d ago

Wasn't a big fan of LBP and Tearaway either... the dev created stuff still felt limited to the game creation tools.

G20WLY1282d ago

^take you palm and mash it into your face, please Jinger. Thanks 😊

@ Jinger

I'll be honest, I am a bit conflicted about what I'm about to propose to you here because on the one, hand I firmly believe that you have the right to respectfully express your views as you've done here. On the other hand, I also feel like you have no business being here given how you feel about games of this nature.

In your own post, you stated, "Give me Ghost of Tsushima, Spidey over a game like Dreams any day.". But they've done EXACTLY that. You have Uncharted 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Spiderman, The Last of Us 2, BloodBourne, I mean, the list goes on and on. Meaning that you should have a plethora of other threads/articles that are more suited to your taste that you could be positively influencing. So why exactly are you in here? What exactly is the purpose of your post? And I don't mean that in a mean way at all, I am really curious about the end goal of your post here. What exactly are you hoping to achieve with it?

Jinger1282d ago

@Cupid

I'm not trying to accomplish anything. Just giving my thoughts and views about this game. Didn't even make a troll comment or anything because I understand there are people who like it, but just expressing my views just like the other people expressing theirs.

joab7771282d ago

The reason it is taking so long is because they are fine tuning the ease and extensive nature of the available tools.

This is made for VR. Can you imagine stepping into VR and creating your own movie. Man!!!!!

I don't have the time or patience to build something myself, will maybe tinker with some things here and there, BUT, and a big but, I may not build anything myself but plan on playing the shit out of other people "Dreams."

This looks like Little big planet but with almost no limitations, just on a whole other level.

Will buy it, because this kind of games need to be supported, and the people that do want to build levels need to have people that plays them.

mafiahajeri1282d ago

TBH there are a lot of crappy levels, but that is normal in a game like this.

Thats why they have playlists with the best reviewed levels.

There are amazing levels though, the kind where you scratch your head thinking how someone created this.

Thats the draw for me. Seeing what people can create.

Also TBH its every gamers dream to create a game. So if you actually make something that gets recognition, must be the best feeling ever.

To bad I suck at creation, but hopefully ill be able to create something worthy this time 😂

With all that being said I can certainly see how this game doesnt appeal to everyone.

Its an aquired taste...

bluefox7551282d ago

Creativity isn't for everyone. Minecraft bored me to tears. This looks like a unique and interesting take though, so I'll at least be giving it a shot, especially since there's a campaign.

Dark_Knightmare21282d ago

Bro there's a three pronged story mode crafted by media molecule so yeaaahhh

joab7771282d ago (Edited 1282d ago )

Yeah, I don't get into them either, but many ppl do. And while I don't think it's hard to explain, I do think there is a golden opportunity for this game to be something VERY special.

First, it will be a 3D creation game, and what has taken so long is creating a way for gamers to have easy access to creating their own games like a dev. It will also have its own story or mish mash of adventures to show us how it is done...

But, what is gonna be amazing, aside from the ability to actually create a game yourself, is that it may become an amazing tool for anyone looking to make short movies, YouTube vids etc. It's literally the ability to bring any story to life. Add in VR functionality, and this could be one of the best apps we have seen in a LONG time.

Think of that crazy fantasy story you always wanted to write but never did, or did but it sits as old papers buried on your bookshelf. Imagine stepping into VR like a director and getting to work.

This is gonna be jaw dropping!!!!

WelkinCole1282d ago

In your sad attempt to downplay this game. You forget one key thing.

You don't have to chose on over the other in that all of those games will be avaliable on the PS4.

Picnic1281d ago (Edited 1281d ago )

People, leave Jinger alone. If all comments were only supposed to show unconditional praise for a video then it'd be an echo chamber and we'd never progress. You might think that they're being egotistical but they've explained their reasoning and they're valid as one of many litmus tests for how popular a game might be. It's nothing compared to the kinds of fools who say 'first' on any video. That said, I am personally very, very, interested in Dreams indeed. I wonder if it's mainly useful/going to be used as a 'walking simulator' creator (because I'm sure it'd be great for that). As Microsoft tried Project Spark but its scope of gameplay types was too large to create a united community I'd say. By comparison, I think that In Dreams is going to have loads of enthusiastic if limited attempts at being something like What Remains of Edith Finch. And that sounds very fine by me, no matter how polished it is.

rainslacker1281d ago

Except Jinger spends most of his time explaining why Sony games don't interest him, or why they're bad. Just because he says he's excited for one doesn't mean people take him seriously.

I’m looking forward to dreams like a mf

Summons751282d ago

Was shocked to see this brought back to life after years of being quiet. Glad it seemingly survived development hell. Still not happy that after years the developers still can't explain what this game is, not a good selling point but I'm sure it'll be really fun either way.

DarXyde1282d ago

I don't know, I think it's kinda neat that it's an experience that is difficult to explain, and must be experienced.

To that end, it does well in portraying dreams, don't you think?

Summons751282d ago

But if you can't explain the gameplay, what sells the game, then how do you expect the average soccer mom to buy this for their kids if the bullet point on the back of the box says "We don't know how to explain this game, just experience it". LBP was a platformer that allowed you to build your own levels eventually giving you virtually no limits as to what you could create but we knew what genre it was...a platformer. So outside of creating what exactly are we going to be playing? If they can't explain the most basic point of a video game then there are some big issues. I'll get disagrees for telling the truth because haters will see the criticism and not the fact that I'm excited about this but I can point out flaws and still be excited.

DarXyde1282d ago (Edited 1282d ago )

Summons75,

I think that'll come down to advertising. Just make it known that it's a creative journey (and from the creators of LittleBigPlanet and Tearaway). At that point, the game can speak for itself.

Additionally, it's not about haters and disagreement. Some people will disagree with you and it happens. They may not have a concrete description yet, but it doesn't mean that they won't. At the end of the day, the same themes in LittleBigPlanet are there: create, play, and share. Honestly, I could say it has those elements in addition to being an interactive journey and I think that sums it up pretty neatly.

It's a simple title that doesn't require some convoluted pitch. What we're seeing is very likely what we're getting.

ApocalypseShadow1282d ago

Or, you can wait until the developers explain what you can do when they present it again and not jump to conclusions that the back of the retail box will be nothing but pictures and "see for yourself."

fenome1282d ago

@Summons

Not every game needs to be explained or try to appeal to the soccer mom or casual crowd though, some games just do their own thing and roll with it. Sometimes word of mouth is also the best advertising.

uth111282d ago

i don't understand why people say it's hard to explain. i understood the concept right away when thet first revealed it. It's a world builder/ game builder tool with natural/intuitive content creation tools

rainslacker1281d ago (Edited 1281d ago )

Yes.....but what do you do in it? /s

Wonder why people never ask this question about Minecraft, LBP, Project Spark, etc. What I see is them basically making a rather accessible game engine for the average person. You are limited to the tools they provide unlike other game engines, but the tools are robust enough to keep things open enough for the user to express some creativity, and keep everything within a single ecosystem. On the plus side, you also get a viable platform to share your creations with others, which is appealing to people who are into this kind of stuff, and those who aren't interested in it can still be entertained by the user created content.

_-EDMIX-_1282d ago (Edited 1282d ago )

I know right, it be better if they do nothing brand new and just copy Assassin's Creed right? It's not like Minecraft and LittleBigPlanet never existed right? /s

Oh but this is too hard for u to understand....

Guess it's easier to understand a carbon copy of Assassin's Creed

Summons751282d ago

What the hell are you on about? Your trolling is getting pretty lazy lately, not even laughable anymore.

rainslacker1281d ago (Edited 1281d ago )

I don't think it was in development hell. It just was being refined. Each trailer has shown more of the game, and the dev diary type stuff has generally shown improvement.

I think they give a bit more context on what the game will be like with this trailer than the older ones, so at least there is that.

I'd imagine the game play would be hard to explain as there is more than one kind of game play because the creator isn't prone to single kind of game....like say LBP was most of the time except through some really creative manipulation. This trailer actually showed several different ways to play the game through user created content.

I fear when this comes out I might be stuck in this game for ever.
Being an Illustrator and hobbyist animator, and huge gamer I fear when this comes out I might be stuck in this game for ever.

G20WLY1282d ago

That's right, build me a game, bitch! 😁

I apologise. Can I still have that game? 😳

fenome1282d ago

You're exactly the kind of person whose levels I want to play.

uth111282d ago

i like building worlds in Minecraft, but hate the blocky graphics

i look forward to what i can do in Dreams
