Worldwide digital games market: October 2017

Digital games revenue grows 15% worldwide in October. Players spent $8.5 billion across console, mobile and PC in October, up from $7.4 billion in the same month last year. Growth was underpinned by a 28% jump in premium PC thanks to Destiny 2’s successful BattleNet launch, and the continued blockbuster hit of PLAYERUNKNOWN’S Battlegrounds. Gains were also strong in mobile (19%) with the continued rise of major games like Honour of Kings.

"Single player games still have legs. While multiplayer-centric genres (FPS, MOBA, and Battle Royale) are in the spotlight, there is still room on the stage for single-player focused games. In October, South Park: The Fractured but Whole, Middle Earth: Shadow of War, and Assassin’s Creed: Origins collectively generated over $160M through digital full game sales."

"However, we don’t expect these games to have as much success in the long run, compared to the multiplayer genres, as it is generally harder to monetize through microtransactions in a single-player focused title."

Yeah, that's a good thing.

Can we address the elephant in the room? World Wide digital sales sees Forza 7 at #7, while GTsport is #10.
With twice the userbase, and it’s the first GT game of the generation, to be outsold worldwide revenue wise to forza 7, often referred to as Flopza by some folks has got to be disappointing. So if Forza 7 is a flop, what is GTsport?

Septic322d ago

Well, a GT was always going to do massive numbers based on the name but its obviously suffered due to the quality of GT Sport, particularly when compared to Forza, which doesn't see strong sales but smashes the competition when it comes to reviews.

I still think GT Sport will go on to sell big numbers come the Xmas bundurus but answering your question:

"So if Forza 7 is a flop, what is GTsport?"

In terms of sales, Forza 7 is under-delivering. Definitely not as much as GT Sport either so sales-wise, GT Sports is the winner., despite the obvious drop in quality, esp compared to Forza.

Kribwalker322d ago

clearly someone didn’t read the article. FM7 placed above GTsport in digital dollars sales. So currently that would place FM7 ahead, with half the userbase....i never realized finishing 10th was better then finishing 7th

Septic322d ago

Oh my bad. I thought GT was smashing Forza in sales based on a recent article? Didn't realise digital sales were so high for Forza

Congrats to Forza 7! 👍🏼

It is amazing that it is selling better digitally than the iconic Gran Turismo. On last month's NPD physical sale data, it outsold GT Sport too.

The game looks Amazing on my 4K HDR TV with the power of the X. No wonder so many gamers are buying it. 👍🏼

Yeah that elephant in the room doesn't necessarily mean Forza sold more! Forza is also a game full of microtransactions, which I'm pretty sure accounts for a massive amount of revenue.

Kribwalker322d ago

Big flaw in that theory. You cannot spend real money in game as of right now on Forza 7. Strictly ingame currency 😉

Platinum_Fan322d ago (Edited 322d ago )

I'd like to remind you that Forza 7 launched 2 weeks earlier in October and that GT Sport sold more at retail in Japan alone than Forza 7 did globally and that retail is still the larger market buy 60-70%.

So it's very likely that in total sales GT Sport is still leading.

Kribwalker322d ago

with twice the userbase and a huge IP like GT for us to even have a discussion about these games being close has to be disappointing to sony. And those numbers you are talking about are VGChartz estimates, which have been proven wrong countless times.
Most games sell the majority during launch week until sales start happening on games, look at mario and AC Origins, which finished 2-3 in october releasing only 4 days before the end of the month on NPD. If people really want it, majorlity buy it at launch.

Really strange since

First week in UK:

Gran Turismo Sport - 74,000
Forza Motorsport 7 - 27,000

If it's in UK almost 3:1 where Xbox One is strongest, what's the split in other european countries where Xbox One doesn't exist like Germany, Spain, France, Italy,...?

Kribwalker321d ago (Edited 321d ago )

maybe more people buy it digital on xbox, as the numbers you are suggesting are physical only. And we know in North America Forza 7 outsold GTSport in october as well

Platinum_Fan321d ago (Edited 321d ago )

"maybe more people buy it digital on xbox"

Maybe your just making excuses.

"North America Forza 7 outsold GTSport in october as well "

It beat GT Sport by a tiny margin (rumors say it was less than 1500 units), globally GT Sport is assuredly outselling Forza 7. And again your comparing a full month vs a half a month, GT Sport would have closed that tiny gap in two weeks for sure.

Kribwalker321d ago

I came with facts. it sounds like you are the one making excuses. World Wide digital sales has Forza at 7 and GTSport at 10. So regardless, more people did buy forza digital then Gtsport.

Why would mario and AC creed sell number 2 and 3 in only 4 days outselling GTsport that was out 2 weeks earlier if that was the big difference maker?

I'd be interested to hear how they came up with these numbers neither Sony nor Microsoft reports numbers and nowhere in the article does it say how they calculated this.

Fate grand order is the money printer for Sony.
