A game that released in 2016 shouldn’t be eligible for a 2017 list, right? Wrong. Games should be judged on new content, not just their release window.
I disagree. Give other games a chance to shine. Several 2017 games get overlooked as it is, like Persona 5 and Yakuza 0.
like Overwatch was even a 2017 game.
May 2016. Man, calendars are hard. lulz
Didn't it get an award or a nomination last year?
Battlefront 2 is my GOTY.
Found the EA Rep
Found BF2 hater ^^^
Why's that? Because it actually may have brought about a huge change in the market, as MT finally got recognized publicly as a problem the consumers had with modern gaming. If anything, it may actually be the most influential game of this year, so may be worth a GOTY nomination. Not because it's worthy of it, because it's rather pedestrian overall, but because it had some influence.
Game is fantastic. Great graphics Great Sound Best campaign story of the year Multiplayer is fun and immersive EA and DICE crafted a masterpiece.
you gotta work on your trolling art man, lol this is just too obvious
@sgt-you can have your opinion regarding Electronic Arts and loot crate's which nothing is really wrong with that but please stop trying to attack other users simply because some of them like Battlefront 2 even though I would not give this game game of the year based on many other games I like more I'm not also going to attack any person that believes this is Game of the Year for them personally. Based on the sales somebody lied to Battlefront 2 and be honest nothing is wrong with that. Leave the debate about microtransactions In Articles specifically talking about that I don't understand this websites obsession attacking people simply for having different opinions on games they like.
Yeah I know. Persona 5 is actually my GOTY. BF2 can eat Jar Jar shit.
gotta be trolling smh...
Then it must be the only game you’ve played this year.
by GOTY you meant "Goof of The Year", right?
@edmix If making a topical joke about someone's comment is now attacking a user, then this site will be down tomorrow. Hope everyone enjoyed their stay here, it's over.
"Best campaign story of the year " Not even close. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is one of 2017's best if not The best campaign/SP offering.
Yakuza 0 is mine, easily.
The story in Yakuza 0 is so damn good!
and the pure badassery... a relatable, real-life badass just trumps over fantasy super-soldier pew pew easily
Yakuza/Ryu ga Gotoku is a great series in general. I've been playing Dead Souls lately and already clocked in 70 hours from the main story + substories and sidequests lol. These games have a ton of content and stuff to do without the need of microtransactions.
Same here. The only game left on the calendar I can see challenging it is Xenoblade 2 but man Yakuza 0 is an amazing game.
Persona 5 is still my current GOTY... such a masterful experience, best JRPG I've played in so many years. Nier Automata, Resident Evil 7, Yakuza 0, Horizon, Zelda BotW, Nioh, Super Mario Odyssey and Cuphead are also on my list of GOTY contenders. Incredible year.
lol the writer is an obvious Overwatch fanboy who don't really play any other MP games, there're literally tons of games with way more new content this year than Overwatch. Some even underwent expansion-like changes like Warframe which goes open-world, Dota 2 overhauling its entire leveling mechanics with the new talent system (the entire roster of 100+ heroes underwent big changes unlike some lame itsy bitsy new Valkyrie-mode change). and there's also the overlooked masterpieces of 2017 like P5, Yakuza 0, Nier. I swear man, Yakuza 0 is the most damn bad-ass coolest game I've ever played and I've played many badass games from Kratos and Solid Snake to Master Chief. consider yourself informed guys, try Yakuza 0 and it will blow your minds, a masterpiece just waiting to be played right there.
Glad to see we unanimously agree. This game has no campaign, graphics look last gen, and was released as full priced game. They charge for characters and cosmetics while already lacking on content. Sure it's a really fun game but it's not GOTY.
Nope put that trash out of the list plz
trash? LOL but you probably prefer an consistently broken mechanic/lag game in Call of Duty, right This game shouldn't be a part of 2017 goty contenders though.
Nope great games like U4 and the last of us! All Sony and Nintendo exclusives as well
Game is too repetitive
Is COD going to be on GOTY lists though? When was the last time that actually happened? While I don't consider OW trash, I do feel there are much more influential and better games this year. But OW shouldn't be a contender because it was released last year. Just because it got new content that made it better, doesn't mean it's a 2017 game. If there's some award for best DLC content for the year, it can compete there.
That’s a big NO to be honest.
I disagree completely. I don't think it was the game of the year for 2016 either.
Even if we did count new content, it still wouldn't even come close to be being game of the year this year.
wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong
Did Blizzard write you a big old check to write this article? Oh, it’s from gameinformer. They’re shills. No wonder.
By this logic, GTA V should have been GotY for the last 4 years.
GTA 5 didn't even deserve it the time it got the award. The last of us was miles better but the critics had to be a crowd pleaser.
I couldn’t agree more, but that’s why I’m going with this author’s logic lol
The Last of Us still won more GOTY awards than GTA though so it's all good..
Well to be honest The Last of Us did win more Game of the Year Awards in fact it's one of the most awarded games in history. I was extremely shocked simply because I was very excited for Grand Theft Auto and also excited for a new intellectual property I just never believed out-of-left-field a new IP would overtake Grand Theft Auto in terms of the sheer number of awards. That is one of the biggest reasons why I always buy a PlayStation because you never know what to expect even with the very last year of a Playstation system before a new console comes out.
Nope the content is barely worth it and most of it is cosmetic also the game still has massive balance issues. It wasnt goty in 2016 and nits not in 2017.
No, and frankly, it didn't deserve to be on last year's list either IMO.
Then how about putting Deus Ex, Diablo 2, Mass Effect, Half-Life 2, WarCraft 3, Dragon Age Origins, Metal Gear Solid 3, Dead Rising, Gears of War 3, God of War 3 and so much more great games for Game of the Year award? We shouldn't do that, because it's dumb. P. S.: WarCraft 3 last patch was released in april of 2017, so technically speaking, game is still being "supported". Similar goes for Diablo 2.
Gameinformer is owned by Gamestop so we can always expect corporate whipping boy articles by them.
Maybe, but they're independent, and are surprisingly fair about how they handle content. While they're generally more positive about games, they aren't afraid to call out bad games. They also have great interviews. I generally see more articles calling out bad gaming practices from GI than I do from many other major publications which seem afraid to rock the boat.
NO. These lists need to be restricted to 2017 games only. Speaking of lists, Final Fantasy XV (a game from 2016, might I add!) is nominated for Best RPG at TGAs while the other nominess are from 2017. Probably due to how badly Mass Effect: Andromeda sucked.
Pretty sure it's because it released after the deadline for TGA 2016.
True, but being a 2016 game, it shouldn't have been nominated for 2017's TGAs. Far Cry 3 missed a shot, since it released around the same time period as FFXV, but back in 2012, and wasn't nominated for 2013's VGX.
The cut off for those are beginning or middle of November I think.
Don't agree. The game has already been recognized. Time to give the others their time.
Hell no, it's already a shame that OW won GoTY 2016 award.
I think ps4 exclusives will be fighting it out amongst themselves for goty. Rime impressed me as a multi platform, but it doesn't seem to get many mentions. Maybe not being exclusive upset a few people.
In a year where Divinity 2, Cuphead, Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey came out you think the best games were PS4 exclusives? No. Just...no. Hell I'd even put Sonic Mania and Shadow of War on a list ahead of some of the PS4 games released this year.
You're right. I completely forgot about Nintendo. So used to it being a 2 horse race. Cuphead deserves a mention also. Site won't let me downvote myself. Pitty.
Even so, there are a lot better games which released this year in any case in my opinion. I've never rated overwatch. Played about 30 hours of it before i got bored.
Oh gosh, please stop with this overrated game, and let's move to more interesting games that'd deserve some recognition.
A game released in 2016 shouldn't be eligible for a 2017 list, right? Right. End.
This game got so boring in an hour or less, it boggles me that people gave it goty
I can’t get into it either. I find the combat dull compared to my staple mp shooters (Halo, Gears and Battlefield). Also the game was flat out overpriced.
I don’t really care what people do for game of the year lists, but if you include overwatch expect backlash.
The negative thing about these award shows is that they even put Multiplayer ONLY games on the GOTY list in the first place , now some people would want those very same games to have GOTY candidacy on more than one year... Im all for different opinions and preferences, but this is simply ridiculous if this is where gaming and already ridiculus game awards is going.
Stupid article is stupid. Do it this way then every year will just be the same games over and over again. Although, that would highlight the stupidity of game of the year lists in general, so maybe it wouldn't be all bad.
I agree with the argument that a game released in a previous year should still be considered a contender for following years. A game does not stop becoming a game when it's a year old, and all the more reason to consider it if more content is introduced. The title is not "best game released in 2017" but simply "game of the year". However, with that being said Overwatch does not deserve to be on GOTY 2017's lists even with these arguments. Although a good game, it has been completely overshadowed by much better games released this year, including Persona, Yakuza, Nier, Zelda, Mario, Horizon and even Cuphead. Overwatch pales in comparison to these games quite frankly, and has no place in GOTY lists as long as these exist.
If the witcher 3 blood and wine expansion couldn't win game of the year last year then neither can this.
Should be a part of ongoing support list if anything
For those of you who don't know, Gameinformer magazine takes each editor and lets them give their top ten list for the year. Andrew Reiner here is simply stating that he thinks that he should be able to put a game from 2016 (which he played more than anything else in 2017 due to fresh content) on his top 10 games of the year list. He isn't saying that he thinks any publication should give it their game of the year award. I think that's a fine assessment. Games that provide consistent, quality content should be commended.
Shouldn't had been GOTY last year either
Good thing it was not last year, i mean the game awards is not the only game awarding ceremony Spoiler alert The Last Of US won overall Goty it has 250 gotys not honor from TGA, Uncharted 4 165 gotys won overall Goty aswell again no honor from TGA, even if Zelda breath of the wild does not win TGA, it wont hurt its chances at being Overall though i guess the people who dont follow these things closely will call whatever beat it the goty of 2017 even if Zelda drops more then 100 points on it. https://gotypicks.blogspot....
I still don't understand how this game is as popular as it is. I never got the hype.
