Should You Replay Skyrim In VR?

Of its many ports over the last six years, Skyrim for PSVR marks the first time the game feels fundamentally different from the original release back in 2011. It's one thing to see the fantasy realm of Tamriel on a fresh 4K display. It's another to physically look up and see the red moon in a starry sky; to instinctively nod back to greet passing NPCs; to stare down bloodthirsty dragons while charging into battle. Seeing the same old world from a new perspective dissolves the lingering feeling that you’ve seen it all before.

Read that summary above, now understand that this doesn't apply to the Switch version (or any other until PCVR versions release), but then look at how the Switch version is getting higher reviews than the VR version (and simply more reviews in general). What exactly is the Switch version adding that competes with the above summary?

What's really going on here? Wake up sheeple, don't let the media downplay a revolution like VR while putting yet another 'flat' version on a pedestal simply because 'you can play it on the go!!'

Props to Gamespot for getting the truth out there with this vid.

Well, to be far it's not just Skyrim on the go. It's the PS4/XB1 version scaled down a bit and on the go. I bought the Switch version and I picked up the Skyrim VR bundle. Each are fantastic in their own way. The Switch version has the Zelda bonuses of course, but the motion control for the lock picking is incredible. I honestly disconnect my joy cons to use the motion controls because it's so fun. Skyrim VR is self explanatory. You feel like your walking through the villages and forest, the caves feel huge and you just experience this game you spent hundreds of hours in, in a completely new way.

People can hate on Bethesda all they want for porting Skyrim to everything. But lets be honest. Who else is doing it? Who else has a massive open world AAA RPG with graphic fidelity similar to the PS4 and Xbox One? Who else has a massive open world AAA RPG in VR that doesn't cut a single bit of content or gimmick their game into a smaller bite size version of what could have been?

Hate it or love it, Bethesda is paving the way for more developers to bring their games to Switch and VR.

Agreed. The motion control lock picking in VR is great too! And the swimming is great fun.

"Well, to be far it's not just Skyrim on the go. It's the PS4/XB1 version scaled down a bit and on the go."

That's the same thing as Skyrim on the go, I mean Skyrim PS4/XB1 was just Skyrim on PS4/XB1 with a few enhancements and mod support. I have no problem with the Switch version, I just think the VR version adds so much more to the experience and I'm baffled by IGN giving the Switch version an 8 and the VR version a 6.8.

While that's true, the Switch being able to run a customized version of the Special Edition instead of the original provides a much better experience. Running 64bit instead of 32 gives an overall increase in performance and fixes a ton of issues the PS3 version suffered from. While the core game remains the same, having a version that runs closer to the PS4 and XBone while still being portable is a huge selling factor.

I agree though, not sure how Skyrim VR got a 6.8 from IGN. I didn't read/watch their review because it's IGN, but maybe they suffered from a ton of motion sickness? I just got the VR last Saturday, so I'm not very use it and it did mess me up a bit. But honestly, I've been playing in burst of an hour or so before taking a break. After a few days, I really got use to it and was able to play for multiple hours. I haven't even had it a week and it's already much more playable for me over longer periods of time.

At the end of the day, if you get Skyrim Switch or Skyrim VR, you're gonna have a good time if you really like Skyrim.

Oh it's that guy who doesn't do game reviews anymore because of the backlash and DDoSing he got for giving Zelda a 7/10 instead of 10/10. Hey, maybe that's why the Switch version of Skyrim is getting reviewed better, fear of rabid fans.

(that was funny though)

I'd like to try but not paying endless edtions for the privilege.

G20WLY2774d ago

If you want to, sure. I am!

The real question is, if you haven't played it already, should you play in in VR. I'd have to say emphatically YES! It's by far the most absorbing experience and hooks you in even more than before!

FunAndGun2774d ago

I never played Skyrim. While I don't think I will complete the game in VR, I am definitely going to buy and play it in VR. Regardless on how much of the game I will complete, it looks like tons of fun just messing around in the world!

ibrake4naps2774d ago

This and resident evil 7 in VR were my favorite gaming moments of the year!

As soon as Xmas is here I will be playing it in VR

I'm Replaying Skyrim (again), and So Should You

Replaying Skyrim after 13 years is a reminder of the progress made in western RPGs over the last decade, but also what's been lost.

anast449d ago

I tried, but it's a poorly made game that insults its customers.

lucian229449d ago

nah, only mods make it decent, and even then it's bad, and this is after i modded for at least 3 years

Nittdarko449d ago

Funnily enough, I'm about to play it for the first time in VR with 1000 mods to make the game playable, as is the Bethesda way

Modder brings actual brain-powered magic to Skyrim VR

A modder has created a "real virtual magic" mod for Skyrim VR.

The mod uses a brain computer interface that measures your concentration.

The more you focus, the higher your magicka bar becomes. Fill it up and you'll do double damage; let it drop and you'll do less.

I wouldn't recommend anyone to spend more than 10 usd of their hard earned money on Fallout 4. I went into it think I was going to get a New Vegas style Fallout, instead I got a dull reskin of Skyrim.

I also picked up Skyrim and I'm enjoying it for what it is. I should have gotten Skyrim first and replayed New Vegas for my Fallout fix.

P.S. Rage 2 is poop, not worth the price tag.
