In recent years, the term "console war" has largely been about PlayStation vs. Xbox, first in the guise of the Xbox vs the PS2, then the Xbox 360 vs. the PS3, and finally the Xbox One vs. the PS4, in addition to the Xbox One X vs. the PS4 Pro. And let's be real: this is a marketing battle more than anything else. Yes, the consoles do have their differences, particularly when it comes to their stables of exclusives. But they offer strikingly similar takes on what gaming should look like in 2017, they play an overwhelming number of the same games, and they come to the table with incredibly similar hardware capabilities, just not completely identical ones. Which one you want to buy comes down to a matter of taste, preference or loyalty, and the rest of the gaming industry looks more or less the same no matter which console the majority of people decide to pick up (the PS4).
This year, things are a little different.
2017 is the year that Nintendo has emerged from the Wii U doldrums with the suddenly relevant Nintendo Switch, and it's turned the concept of the console wars on its head. The Switch does not play the same games as either of its competitors. The Switch is not nearly as powerful as the Xbox One X or the PS4 Pro, or even as powerful as the Xbox One or PS4. But the Switch does have different games, and these games have a strikingly different aesthetic than what we usually find on the competition. And, crucially, the Nintendo Switch can be used as a handheld or living room console, with a hybrid version where the player stands the thing up on a kickstand and uses it in its "tabletop" form. You can put an Xbox One on a table, just not like that.

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.
Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

Pretty surprised by the Switch hype. Had it since launch and outside of Zelda it is just very underwhelming. Even Zelda was underwhelming from a performance standpoint due to the weak hardware, although the game is amazing despite being held back.
Bought a Switch and Mario Odyssey 2 weeks ago, feels like the same magic as when I was turning 13 and opened up my N64 and Mario 64 on my birthday. Odyssey is magic, can't wait to play BOTW at Christmas. So far I absolutely love the Switch.
The war is still between the Pro and the X. Switch has a most different audience. Only thing to compare here is sales
I'm too busy trying to plan, financially, to afford all the games I want.
I don't have time to play the console war game with fanboys right now, when I've got so many games to save up for and play through.XD
PS4Pro is nowhere to be seen in this new race.
Sony will still do well with the PS4 though.
