Record-breaking Iron Man Blu-ray sells 500K+ units in first week

As the markets were tumbling, "Iron Man" posted the strongest first-week sales tally of any new release this year, with distributor Paramount Home Entertainment selling 7.2 million DVDs and more than 500,000 Blu-ray Discs.

Day one Blu-ray Disc sales alone amounted to 260,000 units, a single-day record, according to Paramount.

In just one week, "Iron Man" has already become the best-selling Blu-ray title all year. The title also spiked total weekly Blu-ray Disc sales to record heights.

And all you have to do is Download the WMV HD torrent. Iron man without a blu-ray drive. You literally save $430.

I used to think those HD 1080p torrents 8 gigs and over were equivalent to blu-ray quality...but i took the jump neway and decided to purchase Transformers and the Spidey Trilogy on blu.

Let me tell u there is a very big difference in quality. All that compression of the file size definitely takes its toll in terms of visual quality on those WMV torrents you boast about. You actually see things that you would never notice on those HD rips. Not to mention the difference in sound quality...man it was overwhelming how much better it sounded.

In short, I'm, purchasing Iron Man on Blu to get the full hi-def experience!

Yeah, I call "selling half a million blu-ray discs positive" as the Iron Man Blu-ray sales equal approx. 20% of the overall sales...In other words...DVD has been in the States for around 11 years, Blu-ray has been around for 2...So 20% very high in such a short term

Have you people actually thought about the numbers. Blu-ray represents 8% of the market. 500,000 is 7% of the total. So while for a Blu-ray it sold well, the actual percentage of the total was less. And it will get worse as time goes on because the DVD will sell well long after the Blu-ray has slowed to a drip.

Even further, the second place Blu-ray sold 35,000 copies, 7% of what Iron Man sold according to the article. That's compared to the "Sarah Marshall" DVD being outsold by the Iron Man DVD 7 to 1. That means the "Sarah Marshall" DVD sold over a million copies, which beats the Iron Man Blu-ray.

While the Blu-ray cost $10 more than the regular DVD, a lot of the DVD sells were the two-disc set. That was priced around the same as the Blu-ray. And considering the Blu-ray version is more expensive to make, studios are using DVDs to supplement the loses on Blu-ray.

People stop believing the hype, Blu-ray will never compete with DVD. If your record breakers only represent 7% of the market after 2 years, call it a day.

It all starts to end after next January.

Actually, I was smart enough to know both formats would be a failure and didn't get either. Not even when the HD DVD add-on was $50. Facts are facts, no one but videophiles really wanted an HD format. HD has been around for years and no one moved to it until the hype started. Most still haven't moved to it.

To be honest, I bought a DVD player week one, when they were $600. And I want a HD format, I'm one of those people that can see the difference. But, I refuse to get pimped. The prices for disc are way out of line. And while DVD was high in the beginning, HD DVD had no reason to be. Blu-ray was unnecessary. A whole new format that cost more at every step of the process was a mistake. Now if the prices had been more in line with the true value, it may have been different. If it was two or three dollars more than DVD, I would have invested. But, I refuse to pay for someone's greed. If you're into that, enjoy.

Before Iron Man, the best opening week a Blu-ray movie has ever had was less than 200k.

So 260k on day one, 500k+ all week is good. It's all about how well you understand the growth, and you apparently don't.

Also, did you know it took DVD 6-7 years to catch up to VHS movie sales? And look where DVD is now- a thriving format.

You complain about the Blu-ray being too expensive compared to DVD. But did you know the Blu-ray versions are usually the special editions, so you get alot of extra content? So they really don't compare to the barest DVD sku.

Also, you're saying they use DVD sales to pick up the slack of high Blu-ray manufacturing costs. That's so completely wrong. It only costs about $1-1.50 more, packaging and everything, to manufacture and package a Blu-ray disc. And since they sell them for $2-4 more than the special edition DVD, they're picking up their own slack.

Wow, 500,000 in one day. I believe the previous record title was 300 in August of 2007. And I believe the number it sold was around 180,000. So it does seem like some growth there. But at that point there were about a third the Blu-ray players in the marketplace. The PS3 has almost tripled the number of players in the market. So for there to have been actually growth, Iron Man would have had to be closer to 600,000. Which doesn't seem like a lot, but after another year and two months, you would expect a lot more. So actually, it broke even at best and there was no growth. Or in actuality, it lost a market-share. So do you understand? Your reply says no.

I'm not into the extra content on most disc, but if others want it, fine. But, the thing Blu-ray fans forget is the extra cost. You say $1-1.50. I've never even heard Sony say it that low. The last I heard was $3. And that is per disc. But, just for fun, let's say a dollar. Now add the cost of, just say 1 million per Blu-ray production line that they haven't made back yet. There are hundreds of lines that needed to be changed. Add the cost of making a Blu-ray Master. That's a lot on top of the dollar per disc. Do you remember how much DVDs cost before Blu-ray and HD DVD came along. Even for two disc sets. First week, two-disc sets were $3 more than the single disc, 17.99-18.99. Those same two-disc DVD sets are now $25. $6-8 more. In the case of Iron Man, $11. What do you think they are charging more for. That's way too much inflation. The cost of making those DVDs has gone down. The only reasons for the price hike was to get people ready to pay more for Blu-ray and HD DVD and to make extra money to cover the expense of Blu-ray. Most of the studios had already agreed to the format and knew the extra expense. HD DVD was much cheaper in every way. But people allowed themselves to believe Sony's hype. Oh well, they won't get me. Do you believe Blu-ray is a dollar more because of the pricing?

But if you believe that the Iron Man movie makes a profit at $13.99 where the vast majority of the copies were sold, how much profit do you think they get off of the extras. It would be a lot at $11. Unless you believe it cost 200 million to make the extras too. Well then I guess that would make the extras a bargain.

I wasn't one of those people who said the Internet would fail. I was one of those people who was saying the Internet was the future. I was saying that the people who were saying it would fail were "old money" people who used the media to get the gullible to believe that. I also said the "old money" would jump on board as soon as the gullible turned on "new money" and forced most of them out of the market. I removed my money from the stock market a year or so before the crash and watched the gullible people lose their money.

Hope you didn't lose much then and aren't now.
