Doom Being On Nintendo Switch Is Impressive, But You Probably Shouldn’t Play It (TSA)

TSA writes: "Doom was one of my favourite games from last year. Hands down it had the best shooting, the best feeling guns, AI that would definitely prove more than a handful, and then there were those glory kills! No matter what platform you played it on last year, it was a blast. However, those hoping for the same on the Nintendo Switch should probably avoid purchasing Doom for Nintendo’s platform as it’s easily the worst place to play it on."

But it is also the most convenient place to play on as well due to the portability.

Pricey2774d ago

Playing doom at 30 FPS is not convenient

Prince_TFK2774d ago

Umm maybe you neglected to see the word “portability”.

Pricey2773d ago

No I can see it, maybe you can’t see clearly at all due to those rose tinted glasses. Validate your purchase anyway you like, it still doesn’t make it convenient to play a twitchy shooter at 30 FPS.

Sirk7x2773d ago

“You keep using that word; I do not think it means what you think it means.”

Neonridr2774d ago (Edited 2774d ago )

one person's opinion, lol.

I am looking forward to this game regardless. Doom on the go will be great.

DEEHULK882774d ago

Don't think that anyone was expecting ps4 or Xbox one level graphics, so in other words people know what to expect when getting it on the switch. It seems like it's a nice version and I'm definitely getting it, even though I have it on Xbox one. Sick of these stupid articles

firelogic2774d ago

Don't know why you're all mad about the truth. It is the worst place to play it IF you have access to any other platform. If you only have a Switch, then it's the best place for you.

kevnb2774d ago

you give up better graphics and in exchange get portability.

firelogic2774d ago (Edited 2774d ago )

Yeah I know that but people here are mad that the guy said it's the worst place to play it when it's a fact. It's sub 720p resolution and running at 30fps. A fast, fluid 60fps game at 30fps is a major compromise.

PlayableGamez-2774d ago

Watched a review
The portable mode isn't worth it considering how limited the joycons are.
There are bugs
Frame drops at 30fps
Come on dude.

kevnb2774d ago

the joycons are as good as it gets for portable gaming, not sure what limitations people will come across?

PlayableGamez-2774d ago

The reviewer said he had to Swtich to pro controller because the Joycons weren't feasible for DOOM on the Switch.
Remember that this is the first FPS on the Switch.

kevnb2774d ago

i think the reviewer is full of it, Ive played games where you have to use both analog sticks and it works almost as good as a dedicated controller.

UKRsoldja2774d ago

There are cheap and small laptops that will play this game on the go no worse than the 540p 20 fps switch version.

juegosmajicos2774d ago

(Responding to the thread)

1) No there aren't cheap and small laptops that will play this as well as the Switch at a comparable price. You have to spend upward of $500 for such a laptop.

2)The joycons' sticks are not quite as good as the pro controller's sticks, but the difference isn't enough that you'll be missing many more shots or anything. You're already playing an FPS with analog sticks, whether you're playing it on joycons or on the Xbox One's Elite controller won't make a significant difference. Personally, I hope gyro aiming is eventually added to the game, as that would be the clear winner of all console aiming options.

The 10th Rider2774d ago

That really depends on your schedule and when you have time to play games. I've played a lot more on my Switch than on my PC lately because it's much more convenient to pick up and play. Though, with Doom, I'd probably still buy it on my PC if I was particularly interested (I'm not a huge shooter fan).

ctrlxthroat2774d ago

I have a job with loads of downtime (selling cars) so I've been enjoying the hell out of my Switch, but I'm definitely the minority.

Cobra9512774d ago

It will sell like gangbusters because it can be played on the go. It's the best version for that purpose (and for players without other systems, of course).

UKRsoldja2774d ago

So can a small laptop. Or did you forget those exist?

The 10th Rider2774d ago

@UKRsoldja,

Sure a laptop is portable, but you can't play it handheld. I have a gaming PC, a laptop that I game on, and my Switch. Bringing my laptop to school to game is alright, but there has to be a free spot at a table where I can use my mouse and it's clunky and adds quite a bit of weight to whatever you're carrying.

Sure a laptop is an option if you want to play a portable game, so is a Vita using remote play, however it's pretty undeniable that a handheld console is going to be ideal for gaming on the go, it's far more portable and you don't need a desk or table to set it up on and play.

_-EDMIX-_2774d ago

@UKR- slow down, some on here are legit allergic to facts.

They've yet to realize this isn't the first portable to ever exist...

The 10th Rider2774d ago

@_-EDMIX-_,

Lol, you're one to talk.

A handheld is a device that can be played in your hands. You can play it on the bus, in the car, etc . . .

A laptop works more as a portable gaming station. You can play it on the go, but it generally needs to be set up. You can't really play in the car. The bus isn't going to work. Etc. . .

Cobra stated that the Switch version of Doom is the best version for playing on the go, which is rather undeniably a true statement. It's not like he said it's the only way of playing it on the go.

bluefox7552774d ago (Edited 2774d ago )

No, if you only have a Switch, you're playing it on the worst place to play it, lol.

DEEHULK882774d ago

No one is getting because I have it on the so-called next gen systems, but I am saying I think that the people that are buying it already know what they are getting. Just like with 2k, Skyrim, La noire and whatever else, we should know what we are getting into because the system is not as powerful as the others, but it's nice to be able to take those game with you

FBNS2774d ago (Edited 2774d ago )

Next gen isn't out yet... It's still current gen... I don't think you actually understand what next generation means... And yes, the switch is the worst place to play it on current generation hardware...

Shiken2774d ago

I have a PS4 and an X1, but I choose to buy it for the Switch due to portability. Considering that I do a lot of gaming on the go now, Switch is actually the BEST place to play it.

Who would have thought that people who buy a handheld hybrid choose to play multiplatform games on it because of portability?

Shiken2774d ago

Well I did not plat Bloodborne on anything else, so yeah I am pretty sure I do lol.

So your rebuttal to someone operating outside of what you think is calling them a liar with no proof? Check my comment history pre switch and you will see that I have been a playstation fan since the PS2.

See how easily the truth can make you look stupid?

_-EDMIX-_2774d ago

You could have bought it on a laptop if you wanted to as well, I mean....basically you can on any major 3rd party game.

"Switch is actually the BEST place to play it."

Subjective.

Not many are looking to play it with low frames, low res, less graphical features, missing features, limited gameplay etc

The 10th Rider2774d ago (Edited 2774d ago )

@_-EDMIX-_,

"Subjective.

Not many are looking to play it with low frames, low res, less graphical features, missing features, limited gameplay etc"

You completely left out the first part of Shiken's sentence: "Considering that I do a lot of gaming on the go now, Switch is actually the BEST place to play it. "

He was clearly saying it's the best place for *him* to play it.

Also, there you go again conflating laptops and handhelds.

_-EDMIX-_2773d ago

@10-

Both portables.

Deal with it.

Shiken2772d ago

EDMIX

Show me a laptop that can run current gen Nintendo games as well as many 3rd party games to come. I will wait...

Or better yet, show me a laptop that can run DOOM at the same settings as Switch for under 300 dollars. Also one that can be held comfortably in hand without taking up much space. Again I will wait...

Seriously you have been pushing this whole laptop crucade blindly and ignorantly. The Switch is a great system...deal with it.

ctrlxthroat2774d ago

I think the reason it irks me that people are saying it's the "worst" way to play it is because it just immediately sounds so negative to those that are just skimming headlines. I just find it amazing that I'm playing Doom on a handheld. Granted, I also felt the same way when Bioshock was released on iOS, but we all know how that turned out.

FBNS2774d ago

So like that mobile port... You agree it's the worst place to play it? Because that Bioshock port was trash... Just sayin

ctrlxthroat2774d ago

Far from worst. It's just different. Each version has it's own pros and cons. Obviously playing on PC is the best way to play it at home. Switch is the best way to play it anywhere else.

blawren42774d ago

Depends on what the person with the opinion values in their Doom experience. a quality gaming PC has the best performance, but lacks convenience and any portability. a gaming laptop has less performance than a desktop, but gains in some portability(but not as good as the Switch), but lack the convenience and lower cost of a console for many. PS4 has high performance, but gains in convenience of a console, but lacks all portability. Everything is a trade off. Which is better, is up to each person to decide based on cost, performance, and portabiility.

tontontam02774d ago

So for other games xbox one is the worst place to play.

Ikenda2774d ago (Edited 2774d ago )

Why no one is saying that this is the best (well, and only) portable version of Doom out there? That's a number 1 spot, isn't. Anyway Doom looks amazing on the Switch, a handheld console (it feels that this reminder is needed constantly) , I'll totally double dipp and play arcade on the train to work.

ctrlxthroat2774d ago

Granted the isn't out yet, I can definitely say I held the #1 score in arcade for the first level for all of a night! I think I'm #3 now...

Ikenda2774d ago

That's the spirit! Im getting it tomorrow!

_-EDMIX-_2774d ago

"Why no one is saying that this is the best (well, and only) portable version of Doom out there?"

Because its not for a fact...

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Ikenda2774d ago

Jesus Christ! Where did you find a handheld laptop that you can play everywhere even in places that you can't sit down! I want it now! You are amazing! Oh... Wait is just a laptop... That you need a extra mouse or controller to play... I take it back... You are a miron...

vergilxx32773d ago

Ikenda it's Called GpD win a portable windows console you can play skyrim and doom on it rof a few bucks

Levii_9236d ago

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.

Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

LG_Fox_Brazil35d ago

That's a pretty fucking great list

__y2jb35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

The only one I’d disagree with is doom. It shows its age badly I think. After 5 minutes of play these days you put it down.
