Pokemon isn't, it's super popular, but not overrated.

DarthZoolu2729d ago

Not all, just many, some of them are fire!

Tazzy2729d ago

Nah its just jealousy from people like you they have 2 blockbuster games within months of each other I'd like to see and Xbox or Playstation game sell 463 copies every minute.

Babadook72729d ago

I played through MARIO 3D world because of the hype and reviews. I hope I don’t find this title to be so “overrated”.

Honestly, the whole concept depends on how much you expect from it. Look at it like this. Every game starts at the same base point and as people continue to talk about and praise it, expectations get a little higher. I think Mario is a fantastic game, but I could easily see someone going it's good, but not 12th, with the next point up being fifth, best game of all time on Metacritic good.

GottaBjimmyb2728d ago (Edited 2728d ago )

Odyssey is not over-rated AT ALL, I think it is easily the best 3d platformer I have played, if you don't like 3d platformers, then fine, but that doesn't make it over-rated.

admiralvic2728d ago

GottaBjimmyb

See, you missed my point entirely. I'm literally saying it's fantastic, but based off how hyped up it is from your perspective, I could see it being overrated.

For instance, if I said it was tied for the sixth best game of all time on Metacritic, would you agree it's that good? Would it raise your expectations? Isn't that a lot higher than people saying it's a good game?

Tazzy2729d ago

Again name 2 games on either Xbox One or Playstation that got released within months of each other and both scored 10s.

RommyReigns2728d ago

'and both scored 10s'

*got overrated with truckloads of 10s

Fixed :)

DrumBeat2728d ago (Edited 2728d ago )

I'd give that to BotW. Period. Mario isn't getting stroked nearly as much as Link.

RommyReigns2728d ago

Mario is the King of gaming, Link is a peasant.

iplay1up22728d ago (Edited 2728d ago )

Oh, please, you probably don't even have a Switch. The game looks amazing!! Plus I get tired of the same ol same ol, over and over. Especially shooters, same game almost with different settings. The only reason I don't have a Switch yet is I have a Wii U, and the games just weren't there for Wii U owners on Switch. I did not want to play Wii U games that I have had since they came out on Switch. That has changed finally.

Not just that, but the game is COMPLEAT, no DLC after DLC. I get sick of paying $60 for a game and then another $100 in DLC when it comes out.

Einhander19712729d ago

Have you played it? Probably not certainly not overrated. Simply amazing. And if we want to go down the route of overrated I can think of plenty that don't deserve the hype.

EddieNX 2728d ago

Agreed. Odyssey isn't overated at all. It's the best 3d platformer ever made and Is a masterpiece with perfect gameplay and packed full of content. 10/10

Pancit_Canton2729d ago

Yes. The media should be ashamed for giving Nintendo a free pass when it comes to Nintendo exclusives.

gangsta_red2729d ago (Edited 2729d ago )

How is the media giving Nintendo a free pass? More importantly, why would the media do this?

Pancit_Canton2729d ago (Edited 2729d ago )

Have you heard anything about the Nintendo Creators Program?

If you said anything bad at Nintendo, the gaming journalist/ gaming site would lose the privilege of reviewing another Nintendo games/ products in the future. See Jim Sterling for reference.

The media are afraid of this happening, because this threaten their livelihood. Nintendo is a pretty big company in the gaming industry. Losing Nintendo as one of your client would be devastating for that gaming site / content creator person. That is why they try pleased and make Nintendo happy at all cost.

thekhurg2729d ago

Reviewers consistently give Nintendo games a pass on mechanics they complain about, and dock points for, in other games.

TekoIie2729d ago (Edited 2729d ago )

@pancit_canton

Lol no.

Also how does nintendo have the power to pull down a written review???

admiralvic2729d ago (Edited 2729d ago )

@ Pancit_Canton

Nintendo has already placed stricter requirements on getting game reviews following the 3DS game getting ripped. Also, your point is fundamentally flawed.

"Losing Nintendo as one of your client would be devastating for that gaming site / content creator person. "

Nintendo has many great games, but their sales aren't the best. I don't think anyone could say missing out on Wii U reviews would be devastating, as the sales simply weren't there. For a while you could make a case for the 3DS, but recently there hasn't been much. You might not get Pokemon, but anyone who makes a fair amount of this could easily justify paying up to $40 for Pokemon and saying whatever they want about Nintendo. As for the Switch, a lot of people ended up buying Zelda or doing the Wii U version because if you didn't get a Switch, you had to wait anyway. ARMS got enough publicity via the global test punch and shows where people knew what it was about. Now, you can make a case for Splatoon 2, but again, we're talking about one title. Outside of that, there was an enhanced port, something Ubisoft published (meaning it doesn't matter what Nintendo thinks of you), a Dynasty Warriors game and Mario.

So, objectively speaking, you could tell Nintendo off and not face a problem. In some cases you might actually gain more support, as if people genuinely believe Nintendo games are bad and you speak out, you gain creditability.

@ ThekHurg

This is just bias. There are actually a fair number of poor review scored Wii U and 3DS games, just like games like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout generally get away with more than others. Mind you, I'm not saying Nintendo doesn't have overrated games, just that the concept is not limited to Nintendo. We also see the opposite with certain companies having a negative bias too.

D0ffy2728d ago

@Pancit_Canton

I find it hilarious that you use Jim Sterling as reference. Sure he hates Nintendo's guts when it comes to copyright claims and the like, and rightfully so. But even he says it's a game of the year candidate and probably the best platformer ever created.

So, nice try.

I haven't played odyssey yet but botw lives up to the hype. One of the best games I have played.

LeoDDestroyer2729d ago

I disagree, botw was quite boring to me.

stupidusername2729d ago

It's clear that you don't know professional gaming journalists.
The most important thing for them is integrity. They simply don't give a game a 10 in fear of not getting to review their games again. If you play a lot of games and you played either Mario or Zelda I think most should be able to get why the games got so many 10's, even if you personally didn't enjoy them.

Not to mention that Splatoon, Arms and fire emblem warriors didn't get the same praise as Mario and Zelda.

Monster_Tard2729d ago

"journalist/ gaming site would lose the privilege of reviewing another Nintendo games/ products"

Lol what? They can't stop someone from reviewing their games.

You are getting confused with the claims that Nintendo doesn't send review copies of their games to people who give their games negative reviews.

gangsta_red2729d ago

@Pancit
"If you said anything bad at Nintendo, the gaming journalist/ gaming site would lose the privilege of reviewing another Nintendo games/ products in the future. "

Pretty positive you are way overblowing the situation.

And there has been plenty of Nintendo games that were not reviewed positive, Starfox 0 is the first that comes to mind.

If Nintendo gets such a pass then we would see every site handing 10's to every Nintendo game.

The truth is Nintendo focuses on gameplay and design more than resolution, cinematics or any other bells or whistles that may look good but adds nothing to gameplay. This is what makes a lot of their games review so well.

It has nothing to do with Nintendo be given a pass and I doubt anyone would lose their jobs if they couldn't review a Nintendo game anymore especially given with two other huge competitors in the market along with an abundant amount of 3rd party devs.

It's strange for me to see people get upset or not understand why a Nintendo game would get perfect scores but celebrate when other games (that add nothing new to design) do.

In my opinion, it's not overrated - talked about a lot, yes - but what game isn't on each respective console? I definitely enjoyed my time with it. My major concern were the wall mechanics, because not being able to grab ledges when you were within range is irritating. Overall, great game, and I definitely dug the curiosity aspect of it.

Side note: Mario Sunshine did NOT suck. Not better than Mario 64, but it did not suck. To each their own, though.

Super Mario Odyssey Turns Seven - Ranking the 3D Mario Games

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "With the Switch getting on in years and the prospect of a new Nintendo console growing closer, now seems like an excellent time to take a look back at one of its mascot’s two big evolutionary lines, particularly since we now find ourselves in the longest wait ever between 3D Mario games. Today marks the seven year anniversary for the release of Super Mario Odyssey, and with no full new entry in sight, it comfortably beats the roughly six year wait between Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, which should also be good news to anybody who broke a mirror that day.

3D Mario has delighted fans since 1996, maintaining an astonishing level of quality and bringing innovations not just to the 3D platformer genre, but gaming as a whole. Needless to say, it’s a hard task to rank a series where every entry is beloved, but I shall nevertheless undertake this risky venture with my head held high. Wish me luck."

One of the worst marios.. i hated the fact it was only about finding the moons and very repetitive with the same bosses. There is no exploration in this one.
Galaxy 2 is still unmatched

TiredGamer181d ago

I played, completed, and enjoyed Mario Odyssey, but I tend to agree that I don't think it's the best 3D Mario. There was sense of sameness that prevailed after the first couple of worlds... not in the levels, environments, or aesthetics, but in the routine of each world. It just felt like each new environment was just the beginning of another checklist of moons to acquire, and the sheer number of them took away the sense of accomplishment I got from the stars in Mario 64 and the like. I can't exactly put my finger on why that is. Galaxy gets my nod as the best one.

Cacabunga181d ago

I enjoyed it too but i won’t even place it in my top10 mario games.. as you said you are just looking for stars and that irritating music everytime you find one.
Also the bosses are pretty much the same from begging to end. I would have have like some koopalings instead of these dumb useless rabbits

Chocoburger181d ago

I played a little of this game and freakin' LOVED it! But I forced myself to stop because I hadn't played Galaxy 2, which I've been playing every day for the past week. Cripes, Galaxy 2 is way better than I expected it to be! Even though I dislike the Wiimote and nunchuck controls, and it annoyed me a lot with Galaxy 1, part 2 just feels better and slightly less gimmicky when it comes to the controls.

Profchaos181d ago

Sunshine at number 7 no way. I get it's not perfect but it deserves better to date there has not been another 3d Mario that's managed to capture that same movement it's the most acrobatic feeling Mario to date.

It's by and large better than 3d land/world and I'd argue that galaxy 2 didn't offer any trie innovation it was essentially a DLC pack to 1

Personally it's
1) Mario 64
2) Mario Sunshine
3) Mario galaxy
4) Mario Odyssey
5) galaxy 2
6) Bowser fury
7) 3d land/ world.

Could Super Mario Odyssey 2 Be Luigi's New Big Adventure?

Super Mario Odyssey was the Nintendo Switch’s debut for the franchise, and we saw our red-hatted friend don a new piece of gear that doubled as his new sidekick, Cappy. With so many characters getting some prominent screen time, Luigi felt completely uninvited to this party. That’s why we can’t help but think that Nintendo has something special cooked up for him in Super Mario Odyssey 2.

I hope they move on from Odyssey. It is my least favorite 3D Mario game. If felt shorter and a huge step down from Mario Galaxy 1 & 2.

Becuzisaid274d ago

I was happy for a more free roam 3D Mario, it's been forever since there was one like this, but I agree Galaxy 2 was a better game. Galaxy 1 I didn't like as much oddly.

The 10 Biggest Nintendo Direct Moments of the Switch Generation

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Last week Nintendo held this year's surprisingly packed not-E3 Direct; with a full schedule for this year and a vague promise of a console successor next year, it's very possible that we've now seen our final Nintendo Switch Direct, or at least one with major first party reveals. That makes this a good time to sit back and reflect on a generation of Direct moments, from the shocking and surprising, to the joyous and exhilarating - and, quite often, all at once."
