I can't wait to dive into this giant jrpg.I wonder if you have to play xc1 to understand the story because I haven't.

Go play Xenoblade Chronicles while you wait. It's one of the best JRPGs in the last decade.

no, you don't have to play the previous games since they're separate stories.

We don't yet know enough about Xenoblade 2's storyline to say if there's any direct link between the two, but from what's been shown so far, it looks like they're separate stories.

The only real similarity between them that I can find, aside from common stuff like some of the creatures you fight being recognizable, is that both Xenoblade 1 and Xenoblade 2 have you journeying across continents/worlds formed upon the bodies of Titans.

The difference is that there were only two, ENORMOUS, humanoid-shaped Titans in the first Xenoblade, whereas Xenoblade 2 has a larger amount of somewhat smaller Titans to visit, and all of them are more animal-like than human.

So from all indications, no, you shouldn't need to play the first game to understand the second, since none of the storyline or characters from the first game seem to have been carried over.

Though, like Servbot41 said, I'd highly recommend playing the original Xenoblade, whether it's the New3DS version or the Wii version.
It's one of those games that gamers on other consoles really wished they had gotten as a multiplat, and that some even picked up a Wii just to have the chance to play it.

Christmas really is coming early for Switch owners. I can't wait to dive into this game.

I wonder if it will have Japanese language options for the voice-overs, while using English dubs and text for everything else...
That would be pretty great, though I don't have any big issues with the English VA's as they are...

Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed Brings the Xeno Saga to a Glorious Close

Xeno fans rejoice! The six-part saga has finally been told!

Xenogears was originally supposed to be a six part series, but Squaresoft cut the budget for the first game and canceled future plans. Xenosaga, published by Bandai Namco, was its spritual successor, and it too was supposed to be a six part series but was cut to a trilogy after subpar sales for Xenosaga 2.

Future Redeemed is by far the best DLC of the Xenoblade series, achieving its lofty goals of introducing new characters, reconnecting with older ones, and closing a narrative that Monolith Soft’s main man Tetsuya Takahashi has been trying to tell since 1998.
