Jim Ryan on Xbox One X: Specs Are Interesting, But The Proof Is In How Games Look

When asked about Xbox One X's superior hardware, Jim Ryan commented that specs are interesting but ultimately the proof is in how the games look on the screen and PlayStation 4 Pro will remain the best place to play.

If you want the crap version for an additional $400 then yes.

Xbox One never have true exclusive game anymore. Have more exclusive games are also a fact.

Can't really expect him to say otherwise.

I'm confident there will be a discernible difference in visual quality. ..the thing is I don't care.

Ceaser98573612365d ago

Of course PS 4 is the best place to play... Best games only exclusive to the PS4 which most xbox fans thinks is irrelevant just to defend the poor run of Xbox one ... but ya Xbox one x is a beast but it will take more to steal the thunder from PlayStation camp..

LastCenturyRob2364d ago

Of course you are wrong. ""best" is an objective term. Guarantee you there are more Sony players out there that would love having Halo or Gears on a Sony console as opposed to Xbox players that would enjoy Sony exclusives on theirs...and no the vast majority of PS4 players will not purchase a $800 plus gaming pc to play those game properly. Not saying the exclusives on PS4 aren't good. Many are but for every million seller PS exclusive there is an Xbox equivalent. Sony does have more exclusive but many of them are not AAA blockbusters. Quite a few are niche games and not huge sellers. On average with both consoles the top twenty selling games on any given month are majority cross plats with three or four exclusives in the mix.

Ceaser98573612364d ago

oh Lastcenturyrob Please stop , i really cant wait to get back to you on March. after you said Everyone will jump onto to X and play all the games instead of handful of exclusives..

I really dont like HALO but yes I love the Gears franchise and liked QB too... This two reason why i got the Xbox one. And Sony at least gives importance to talents and gives dev freedom to do what they want unlike MS, MS dont need that since its one huge company and Xbox is a small part of it... Nice games sells well and trust me each games are target to segments of people and you cant expect an exclusive to sell 10 mil but reaching 3 mil to 5 mil is an amazing figure and yes! you cannot expect all PS Exclusive to sale well..

spreadlove2364d ago

Even Jim Ryan can't talk smack about that X specs. I wonder if Jim Ryan thins of the children when it comes to the X, I mean there is 3 X's in the name Xbox One X. It is also often nicknamed the monster, and a beast.

Ceaser98573612364d ago

SPREALOVE why would anybody talk bad about X when its a known fact that X is poweful. But again he also said Games does the talking and Playstation has the best exclusives and Exclusives sales consoles period.. With Xbox one people now have options to stick with PC or Not..

Odd choice of words but I think he means is they have great exclusives and they will look at their best on Pro. Obviously if you take the same game and run them on both the Pro and X then the X will look better.

Thatguy-3102365d ago

Well he's not denying that they have stronger hardware. He's making it known that they have the better games and better developers.

KaiPow2365d ago

Exactly. Just throwing more horsepower at a project will get some gains, but not nearly as much as if you code for efficiency in the first place.

2365d ago
pedrof932365d ago (Edited 2365d ago )

@Wooly

More exclusives is also a fact.

2365d ago
AspiringProGenji2365d ago (Edited 2365d ago )

@wolly

The true hard fact here is that the Xbox X will only be enhancing ports, while PS4 games are being deleveloped from the ground up on a console that is still alive and kicking. Sony devs don’t need raw numbers to make games look good. They have the talent to produce a quality games. Remember how Next gen GoW3 looked on PS3 on a much weaker console than Ps4?

I believe this is What Jim is saying here... you can have the horsepower, but without talent and efficiency that horsepower will be pointless. And there’s also the fact that the X will never be used to its full potential like the PS4 is being used

Armyntt2365d ago

@kaipow, exactly. Just because the car has 2k horsepower doesnt mean its better than a buggatti.

conanlifts2365d ago

@solid snake

"Higher rated games on avarage and better sales are also facts"
If that is your concern get a Nintendo Switch. It has the 2 highest rated exclusives of the year ( without including MK8).

freshslicepizza2365d ago

@Thatguy
"Well he's not denying that they have stronger hardware. He's making it known that they have the better games and better developers."

Well when you release a small handful of desireable titles per year compared to the dozens and dozens of titles from third party I somehow get less impressed that Sony studios somehow matter at the end of the day like many here think they do. Now when you add all the software totals of Nintendo exclusive games sold per year and compare them to all other software titles then yes, Nintendo can be arrogant they have some powerful titles that people will buy their hardware for.

2365d ago
freshslicepizza2365d ago (Edited 2365d ago )

@ImTrumPeach
"And the flaw in your argument is that multiplatform games are also on PS4. PS4 has every multiplatform that Xbox has PLUS it has a HUGE library of exclusive games that aren't on Xbox."

And a lot of them are also on the PC, the same argument you guys make about Sony's main competition can be thrown right back at you. Sony is not Nintendo, so the very few titles Sony does make where 'proof' as he calls it to spec s on hardware is a silly argument he's trying to do his PR spin on.

KillBill2365d ago

If they are exclusive to that console then pretty sure there is no comparison to that game on other systems. So a bit redundant is it not?

OB1Biker2365d ago

No hes right to say the proof is how the games look. First as the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and to most people I dont think there will be a huge difference for multiplat. Second a gamer with a PS4 will be feeling that his exclusives, and there are many, look better than whats on the XB1X,specially since theres often nothing similar.

uth112364d ago

When games with visuals like HZD and Driveclub give even PCs a run for their money, it shows raw horsepower isn't everything, it is what you do with it

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen2364d ago

Pretty much. Xbox hasn't had very much in the way of exclusives that stand out, console or otherwise and those "average" games will still be average even at 8k resolution.

He has a point none of MS devs are up to standards like Sony's are 🤷

343_Guilty_Spark2365d ago

Sony is an entertainment company. That’s their bread and butter.

WeAreLegion2365d ago

Yeah, but both their hardware and software are pretty good. Microsoft is capable of creating and/or buying a great lineup of first party studios. Why aren't they? That's my concern. I don't want a two horse race.

SpaceRanger2365d ago

Sony is a hardware company outdoing a software company...with software and hardware.

Sunny_D2365d ago

Why are you making it seem like MS has been in gaming for only this generation? They’ve been in the gaming industry for more than 15 years now. That’s no excuse.

343_Guilty_Spark2365d ago

Gaming was a side project for Microsoft. Now with mobile dead, and PCs on the decline they really need to invest more into gaming.

trooper_2365d ago

Keep making excuses for Microsoft.

rainslacker2365d ago

MS has been in the game long enough to have quality devs. I feel that MS devs are of high quality, but they still don't produce the same level as Sony's premeir developers do. MS has Forza which is their real stand out in terms of graphics, but the last Halo and Gears looked rather average and comparable to most of what 3rd party was producing without really trying to hard. Sony's premeir developers though have constantly raised the bar with each successive game released. Even Sucker Punch at the start of this gen raised the bar with Infamous: Second Son in terms of visual effects. Driveclub raised the bar. While not a 1st party, The Order certainly set high standards, and still outpaces a lot of 3rd party games currently releasing. MS just doesn't have these kinds of games on their system. they have good games, but Forza would be their only benchmark game IMO.

Kryptix2365d ago

"PCs on the decline"

Yea, well, I'm going to burst that bubble and say that, that's factually not true.

http://www.gfk.com/insights...

This is why I expect Xbox One X sales to be garbage after the honeymoon launch phase. Once PSX happens, don't think anyone is gonna care that Super Lucky's Tale is at 4k. To put matters worse for Xbox One X, Nvidia's Volta GPU gets a reveal next year which I predict a nice performance to price ratio with good efficiency. What does a PC gamer benefit from wanting to buy a really watered down PC box.

DialgaMarine2365d ago

@WeAreLegion That’s actually exactly what MS did in the beginning with studios like Bungie. The fact is though that you can’t simply throw money in every direction and make true talent. Most of the companies that MS bought out, or did a hostile takeover of, lost the majority of their best employees because they knew MS’s history and had no interests working for them. Fun fact: did you know Sucker Punch, the studio behind several PS exclusives, used to be a part of MS before Xbox was a thing? They hated working for them and broke off at the first oppurtunity.

Sony started out with owning small studios and then built them over time as they grew alongside PlayStation. This is why Sony has actual talent; not devs that are simply paid to rehash crap every year.

Tobse2365d ago (Edited 2365d ago )

What Standard? They make different games. Ms focus are mp games while Sony focus are sp games. Try adding those graphics to mp games, wont work so well on a console. You cant compare different styles of games that easy. Sure its easy to make your game look good in cutscenes, im not saying it looks bad but ms focus for every upcoming exclusive is mp with good gameplay and not movie like games

j15reed2365d ago

Exactly when your making interactive movies with QTE and hella cutscenes, I'm not going to say its easy to make it look good but it's easier than in a larger scoped multiplayer game.

GUTZnPAPERCUTZ2364d ago

Well... Quantum Break looks just as good as the best 1st party Sony IP's, if you don't think so, you are blind

chrisx2365d ago

The simple fact is that no bone x game will ever look as good as TLOUpt 2. There's only 1true Beast, and its the Ps4pro.

Condemnedman2365d ago

what game play have you seen to make that statment?

DragonDDark2365d ago

chrisx2365d ago

Dragonscale2365d ago

If its anything like the first the gameplay will be just fine. This is Naughty Dog we're talkin about lol.

Turned based Phantasy Star and Shinning Force remain at the top of my list of Sega IPs that need to return. At the very least I'd take a Shining Force collection that has 1,2,3, CD and the Game Gear entries.

FinalBoss3d ago

I was hesitant to put these two on. I've personally played more PSO than the RPG version. And shame on me, I don't remember much about Shining Force to talk about it properly.

That said, so many Sega licences deserve their place in this list.

jznrpg1d 14h ago

A new Phantasy Star in the numbered series would be amazing. Shining Force too. But I’d settle on some collections as that’s probably the best we will get

anast3d ago

I don't trust Sega to do a proper comeback. The games will be just remastered and/or monetized to death.

but indont see that happening unfortunately.

Former Blizzard President Suggests Players Should Have Option to Tip Developers

Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra recently suggested an interesting concept that has sparked a debate among gamers - the idea of being able to tip developers after completing a game.

LG_Fox_Brazil9d ago

If I had a 100% way to be sure that this money would go to a fund or a reserve dedicated only to the guys who develop the games, be them designers, artists, programmers and so on, I could think about it.

But we all know that this 'tip' would only end up in a publisher's CEO pocket to buy a new yacht, so, no, I ain't tipping anyone anytime soon on this industry

neutralgamer19929d ago

Exactly these companies were raising money for good causes and gamers were donation and come to find out they are keeping a good chunk of be pie

PapaBop8d ago

Yeah tip your developer, 5% proceeds go to developer, 95% to the publisher or whoever. Isn't tipping for staff not making minimum wage? How about they just pay their developers properly and like you know, give them fair bonuses? Too much to ask from Blizzard these days, Kotick saw to that and is now laughing all the way to the bank.

MrDead9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

It's the t**ts at the top looking at ways to cut devs wages and get the players to tip them like waiting staff, and I'll guarantee a percentage is skimmed and kept by Activision Blizzard. This is 100% for shareholder and CEO playouts.

Popsicle9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

I have to agree with this. On the surface tipping devs sounds like a great idea, but in the end it leads to pay cuts and subsidization of pay. Tips then become an expectation or the devs “can’t make a living.” Lastly, especially in the US, tip culture has gotten out of control, and it serves as an excuse not to properly pay employees. Sounds good but doesn’t end well.

drizzom8d ago

@ Popsicle

I think your right on the nose with how much tipping has become rampant. Instead of it being a relationship directly between the customer and the developer or employee, it now has a middle man ingrained in the system. DoorDash is one example. It ends up becoming a metric where the company can measure 'just how much more money you are willing to part with' before raising the price on the main product.

1Victor8d ago

Uh so they’re trying triple dip or more we buy the game that they’re already withholding/cutting content for dlc we was told that season pass would help the developers thrive we felt for it.
Now on top of all that plus their sales bonus they want tips enough is enough whatever happens to you create/built a good game get a bonus for sales milestones you care about your game and community we reward you with more sales not for doing 3/4 of a game then save the other 1/4 for dlc and passes after

raWfodog8d ago

The 'tip' is me buying your game in the first place.

S2Killinit8d ago

Very well said. If it was possible to send the money to either the developer or some organization for the betterment of gaming, sure. But we all know that will not be the case.

Rynxie8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

No, it would go to those on the top. They will still fire developers, have a bunch of microtransactions, raise prices of games and so on.

So they eventually don't pay their workers and depend on our tips to pay them like the case with waiters!

Deeeeznuuuts9d ago

That kind of practice is only normal in the states, as far as I know anyway, what a backwards system

H99d ago

No it's as well in a every country that wants to amercanize

bloop9d ago

Ireland is literally the first stop across the pond and we don't have a tipping culture. The only establishments here that would expect a tip are the tourist haunts that Americans visit. Other than that, you might tip in a restaurant as a sign of gratitude for great service and waiting staff would be paid a full wage anyway.

Rebel_Scum8d ago

Tipping is not customary iin most countries dude. Get a passport lol.

Jin_Sakai9d ago

Is this a joke? How about the big wigs giving up some of their pay for their hard working developers.

MrBaskerville9d ago

Maybe the CEO could earn his money based on tips.

mastershredder9d ago

good god. The devs are not baristas dude. Total 1% ideals. Fing Chadosaurus.
