Sony’s Jim Ryan Confirms its Commitment to VR: ‘we’re in it for the long haul’

Expect more from Sony as PlayStation VR continues to dominate.

thorstein2367d ago

Glad you got in before the two (or is it one with two accounts) trolls.

Yes, VR is going to continue to shine.

Neonridr2367d ago

continues to dominate what? console VR?

Eonjay2367d ago

What else would it be... but no, they mean non mobile VR period which includes PC. They have a huge lead in the market place when it comes to install base. It is such a large marketshare that it is fair to say they are dominating. This is kinda interesting though because one assumes that PC should be outpacing console due to PC gamers allegedly having more disposable income.

Neonridr2367d ago

not as many gaming PC's that meet the requirements. Console gaming is a lot more accessible since you don't need to do anything, just own the hardware.

Having a huge lead doesn't mean anything if you have actually tried both. I like my PSVR, and it has a few solid titles, but I love my Rift and all the additional content I get there. But I have a very high end gaming PC that can push VR to the proper levels. Sadly the PS4/Pro cannot.

ApocalypseShadow2367d ago (Edited 2367d ago )

And we here about your rift in every PSVR article. Why not just enjoy PSVR for what it is? It's console VR. Remember Wiimotes flying into TVs? Remember the accidents people had even when trying to be safe? That's why Sony played it safe by doing 180 and standing/sitting experiences.

Anyway, glad Sony is sticking with it. As long as they are, I'll stick with it from them too. Even if they stopped making games after 300 releases, it would have still been worth the immersion.

Dragonscale2367d ago (Edited 2367d ago )

@neon, yeah but for the money psvr is brilliant and its actually not that much worse than the others considering the price difference. Its also the best designed headset, the rift looks like it was knocked up in a garage.

And having a huge lead makes all the difference as it means more games on the platform. Seems you're just downplaying tbh.

Neonridr2367d ago

@Apocalypse - what do wiimotes flying into TV's have anything to do with 180 experiences? Pretty sure the Move controllers are just as likely to go flying into TV's the way VR requires you to waggle them about. Superhot would be a perfect example of trying to throw a bottle or object at a guy only to have the move controller slip out of your hand. There are straps on these controllers for a reason, to prevent exactly that.

The reason why Sony "played it safe" as you said is they only have 1 camera, thus the tracking requires forward facing. The Rift and Vive allow additional sensors to be placed which allows you to freely move around and interact with the environment. Which is why they will always be superior, since they are more immersive.

Again, I wasn't trying to put down PSVR, I really do own one after all. It's just that the title is a little misleading since there is zero competition in the console space in terms of VR. We are seeing some high quality stuff from Oculus with their partnerships with these larger studios. Ready at Dawn, Tripwire, Respawn, Insomniac, etc have all dipped their feet in VR with the help of Oculus, so there is tons of AAA exclusive content there too. I just wish we were getting more content at a steady rate on the PSVR.

Here's hoping 2018 pushes it into high gear.

ApocalypseShadow2367d ago (Edited 2367d ago )

Point is neon, you've decided for everyone what a "proper level of VR is."

Safety was a concern for Sony and Nintendo and still is. Even with instructions, consumers sill injured themselves and personal property.

We are all aware of room scale VR. It would be awesome to experience.
But racing games, flying games, spaceship games, puzzle games, target shooting games, etc, don't need room scale to be fun. Right? The fact that you have PSVR and are having fun with it even with its imperfections means that room scale is not a requirement.

To each their own as you say. So let console owners enjoy their "own" VR. It's like being "that guy" who points out to his friends his million dollar home and expensive car and boat in every conservation. You sound like "that guy." Even if you may not be trying to.

Neonridr2367d ago

@Apocalypse - yeah fair enough, I just think that the word dominate is a poor choice. Forgive my little rant before. I am still a huge proponent of VR and really hope that more people get on board, it truly is awesome.

thorstein2367d ago

What a shock, Neonridr is here to deride VR, once again. How unoriginal since he is on every VR article claiming the same lies.Where's his bff Moldy?

ApocalypseShadow2367d ago

Understood neon. I'm not trying to dog you. I'm just saying what it looks like in the thread. I'm happy you enjoy oculus and VR and continue to do so. I just want to enjoy my PSVR too. I can afford oculus, but there's just no room at the house. Coffee tables, dining table, beds, etc.

I'd have to go outside on the patio to play room scale or in the backyard grass. Or move cars out the garage just to play. It's just not practical for me even though i know it's a better option.

freshslicepizza2366d ago (Edited 2366d ago )

@Apocalypse Shadow
"And we here about your rift in every PSVR article. Why not just enjoy PSVR for what it is? It's console VR. Remember Wiimotes flying into TVs? Remember the accidents people had even when trying to be safe? That's why Sony played it safe by doing 180 and standing/sitting experiences."

And we hear you talk about Forza in GT articles or Microsoft in Sony articles. Don't make your own rules buddy of what others can reference to if you can't stick to just talking about Sony at the expense of downplaying the competition.

"Anyway, glad Sony is sticking with it. As long as they are, I'll stick with it from them too. Even if they stopped making games after 300 releases, it would have still been worth the immersion."

Good for you. I think it's great Sony is using its star power to push VR but let's not kid ourselves Sony is fully committed to VR. It will continue to be a subsidy to the PS4 console because it's a peripheral. The day Sony invests in ONE VR ONLY title that is comparable to the investmenst they make for God of War or Gran Turismo or Last of Us is the day you can come here and say Sony is commited to it.

"We are all aware of room scale VR. It would be awesome to experience.

I'm sorry but you are terrible at counter arguments. That's like saying you don't need the Triangle and Square button on the dualshock because some games only use the X and Circle button.

Well thats good news but they better come with some better stuff then the boringc crap they showed at PGW, the only interesting thing was RE7 DLC at least this one is VR compatiable. The rest looked like tacted on VR modes to mobile/indie style games.

OMGitzThatGuy2367d ago

So old games with VR tacked on and a billion indies, such a lineup worthy of "domination". Where are those 1st party titles that actually play better in VR and not just a tacked on watered down experience? It's gonna go the Vita route just like all Sony peripherals and is only supported by 3rd party indies and not the maker itself.

rpvenom2367d ago

I think it is the future. Of course this is the first generation of VR so there is lots of improvements to be done.. but doesn't mean they should give up on it. Just like generational consoles, the new generation VR's will get better and as long as we support it and encourage it.. the future of gaming in VR will be spectacularly immersive.

Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors: "I deserve a lot of criticism."

Embracer CEO demonstrates a masterclass in mental gymnastics in latest interview.
"I'm sure I deserve a lot of criticism, but I don't think my team or companies deserve all the criticism. I could take a lot of that blame myself. But ultimately I need to believe in the mission," he said.

Turned based Phantasy Star and Shinning Force remain at the top of my list of Sega IPs that need to return. At the very least I'd take a Shining Force collection that has 1,2,3, CD and the Game Gear entries.

FinalBoss5d ago

I was hesitant to put these two on. I've personally played more PSO than the RPG version. And shame on me, I don't remember much about Shining Force to talk about it properly.

That said, so many Sega licences deserve their place in this list.

jznrpg3d ago

A new Phantasy Star in the numbered series would be amazing. Shining Force too. But I’d settle on some collections as that’s probably the best we will get

anast5d ago

I don't trust Sega to do a proper comeback. The games will be just remastered and/or monetized to death.

gold_drake4d ago

shining force.

but indont see that happening unfortunately.
