Assassin's Creed Origins' Microtransactions Are The Antidote To Loot Box Poison

Paul Tassi: "Microtransactions are here to stay so now the only real goal is for them not to be terrible. Against all odds, I think Assassin’s Creed Origins has actually managed to accomplish this, and I would love if more games followed its lead instead of constantly drowning us in loot boxes until they invent something even worse."

Paul Tassi: "Microtransactions are here to stay so now...."

You should consider going and playing in traffic if you're going to be part of the problem. F**k off.

Pro_TactX2372d ago

It’s true. Enough people buy them to make them profitable, so it’s rational for developers to continue including them. That may be inconvenient to hear, but that is our present reality.

Blastoise2372d ago

A bit harsh lol but I agree

JokerBoy4222372d ago

There will always be people who are willing to pay for it and as long as there are people willing to pay, then yes, microtransactions are here to stay. You dont have to like it but its true. Gaming has become more profitable than Hollywood now so yes, you can bet that companies will do anything and everything to keep it that way.

Realms2372d ago

That's a BS excuse you often hear from PR corporate people basically what you're saying is everyone should just bend over and take it. The fact is it wasn't always this way many corporations i.e. EA, Activision, WB, MS are doing this because a few people pay stupid amounts of money on garbage games so everyone one else should just deal with the fact that they are ruining games is not the answer.

warriorcase2372d ago (Edited 2372d ago )

@Realms While I agree lootboxes are trash that needs to go ASAP saying its just "a few" people is incorrect. Unfortunately it's alot of people. rockstar makes around $750mil a year on GTA microtransactions while blizzard activision made over $3.6 Billion (yes billion) in 2016 from microtransactions. As long as this kind of money is being made, no one will abandon them.

Cobra9512372d ago

So is the drug trade. Profitability doesn't make something right.

cabbitwithscissors2372d ago

There will always be people who are willing to buy microtransactions just like there will always be people who do drugs, smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol, gamble, etc. These companies have hit the nail on the head by using the same principals Gillette has used with their razor blades and cartridges concept. Just saying no will not help much if you're too addicted to it and not having a concept of restraint. If you think companies are going to help resolve this, I have a bridge to sell to you.
There needs to be enough gamers around to say enough is enough and stop feeding the companies easy money. Only then will they stop. Nothing else is going to.

Zeref2372d ago (Edited 2372d ago )

MTs aren't going away anytime soon, people are buying them. GTA 5 profit was close to a billion thanks to MTs , its a similar story with Overwatch

BS. Origins HAS loot boxes. Loot boxes that cost "in game currency", currency that you buy with real money. The fact that most reviewers ignored this fact, and many others flat out lied about it should be telling.

We don't need to choose between MTs or Loot boxes, all we need to do is stop buying games (especially single player games) that have them. Publishers will get the message. We're not required to volunteer to line their pockets just to enjoy games.

ocelot072372d ago

Am waiting to buy it second hand. Ill give it until around Christmas time. When the game drops down to the £24.99 price. Ill then snatch it for £20 second hand. Greedy publishers won't see a penny from me spite me playing there game.

pody2372d ago

You should pirate it instead then since you're still giving them your money in the end.

fenome2372d ago

Exactly.

Instead of making the grind a fun and entertaining aspect of the game they're going to make it more tedious to try to tempt people to pay to skip it.

Apparently fun just isn't lucrative enough anymore. Charging money to skip portions of your game just sounds ridiculous. What's next, charging money to skip cutscenes? Charging me money to just not play your game at all? Good luck with that.

I can't believe people defend this crap, it's one thing to be indifferent, but to actually defend it? C'mon

Some games have legs, some don't, that's just the nature of the beast, but now it seems like they're just going to roll them out on a gurney and let us carry it to the bank. Just release a solid product you can be proud of and the rest will follow.

showtimefolks2372d ago (Edited 2372d ago )

Couldn't agree more what use to be known as cheat codes are now being sold to us as mt

Single player games have no need for these yet this excuse from some gamers that you aren't being forced to buy is just absurd

Gta online has made over 500 million from mt

If you think by us staying quite things will change than just wait and see

This idea that some don't have time is even more absurd if you don't have time why are you playing games

Open your eyes and your mind and let's put the pitty difference of fanboyism aside and let's stand together still e can't make a united statement

What was once unlimited use in destiny now is a one time use

Single player games that use to require fun grinding now require tedious grinding unless we are willing to spend money

fenome2372d ago

Mind you, I'm just speaking in general about how things can go from here. I haven't played this or Shadow or even Destiny 2 yet, so I'm not trying to just bash any of these games or take anyone's enjoyment of them away. I'm just voicing concern about how this can go down for future generations.

They're just fishing for whales right now, and they're obviously catching them too so it doesn't really matter because they're making their money. But I hope if they try to start really pulling crap and actually hamper the core game experience because of it that people will call them on it.

BLKxSEPTEMBER2372d ago

AC:O having loot boxes hasn't stopped my progress or enjoyment of the game ONE BIT...do you even have the game?

Dark_Knightmare22372d ago

Exactly the game is a blast and Egypt is absolutely gorgeous. I've been having awesome weapons dropping left and right every time I do something. Jim sterling who is a big stickler for mts and lootboxes even said they are a non factor and we all know if that wasn't true he would be going after Ubisoft hard.

343_Guilty_Spark2372d ago

Prolly not just fun saying what everyone else says.

Loot box = bad

UnHoly_One2371d ago

I finished Shadow of War yesterday then started AC Origins. I haven't played enough of Origins to say much about it yet, but I can't imagine there will ever be any incentive for me to pay for any of this stuff.

As for Shadow of War, the people that said the game was designed to force you to buy loot boxes either didn't play the game, or they rushed though the story missions only, or they are just outright lying.

My final playtime was in the ballpark of 86 hours. I did every mission there was to do. I was drowning in money, loot, and high level orcs that I didn't even need by the end of the game. I had I think 60 orcs that I couldn't deploy into my army because all of my armies were full. Those were just from the loot boxes you buy with in game currency or earn by playing the online vendetta missions and stuff like that.

I was decked out in full legendary gear that was all max level, and I plowed through the Shadows Wars (the final act that everyone is bitching about) like it was nothing. I do not understand how anyone thought the game was too grindy or designed to sell loot boxes. It wasn't. People are lying and everyone is believing them because they just want to bitch about something.

I'm no fan of microtransactions either, but I also don't get in a rage over them, because they aren't hurting me. They aren't hurting any of these people bitching about them either, but they choose to be sheep and believe random people on the internet rather than playing the game for themselves.

I'm with you and while I'm enjoying it I didn't buy it. It was a bday present and I was gonna get it but only if it was pre owned. I won't buy Shadow of War new. I saw a couple of copies today pre owned but I have too many games as we speak so I'll probably get it arounf Christmas or early next year but I will now buy these games new.

As long as I can still get it with in game currency... day 1!

I saw articles like this when Online passes and season passes were new. One of those died 2 years after that and season passes and DLC are on their way out as we speak due to less and less people buying into them nowadays. I blame the fact that season pass's have risen in cost to double on average what they were when they were a new thing, and the fish aren't biting it. Loot boxes will continue to change over time to push the line of what's allowed until it too stops being a thing too. Nothing in the entertainment industry ever stays.

Dark_Knightmare22372d ago

Bro where are you getting your ridiculous false information. Season passes and dlc are def here to stay and are going nowhere anytime soon. Hell if anything all you have to do is look at the prices of season passes to see how entrenched in gaming they are. When season passes were first introduced they cost 20 maybe 25 at most now they are on average 40 so if they weren't selling and were on their way out as you put it they wouldn't be raising the prices they would be lowering them to entice people to buy them.

Dark_Knightmare22372d ago

Bro where are you getting your frankly ridiculous false information. Season passes and dlc are here to stay and def aren't on their way out as you put it. You don't have to look any further than the price of season passes nowadays. When they were first introduced they cost 20 maybe 25 at most now they are rountinely 40 so if they really weren't selling and were in danger of disappearing as you said publishers would be lowering the prices trying to entice gamers to buy them not steadily raising them. I for one don't mind season passes and dlc I actually welcome them because if it's a game I really like and want to spend more time with they give me that option instead of being one and done with it. If we didn't have this option we would have never got the awesome expansions for witcher 3 or bloodborne or the upcoming frozen wilds for horizon zero dawn which people and myself def wanted to spend more time in horizons world and now we get to.

Rachel_Alucard2372d ago (Edited 2372d ago )

First off why the slightly edited double post? Second, I have a few friends that work at Gamestop and the like and they have had meetings where they've discussed that publishers are freaking out now because sales for these things are plummeting fast. This has happened in the past couple weeks. Witcher 3, Horizon, and bloodborne are not what I'm referring to when I say these things are dying. EA, Ubisoft, and WB industrialize the season pass, the games you listed do not and they are all one off experiences not meant to be milked to death like EA does with Battlefield. They were trying to push lootboxes rather then lower season pass prices from the get go to silently dodge the issue. There is no season pass for TitanFall 2, Mass effect: Andromeda, or Battlefront 2 because lootboxes run everything. I mean even looking at Battlefield 1 not even a year out with only 2/4 of its content packs out and they're already selling a GOTY edition with the season pass for $60. They have frequent sales of season passes or did you forget that?

10 Video Game Sequels That Saved Their Franchise

Video game sequels like Assassin's Creed Origins, Doom (2016), and Fire Emblem Awakening were just what these franchises needed to be revitalized.

Immagaiden358d ago

Lmao what’s Halo Infinite doing on this list?

Who would ever say Halo Infinite saved the Halo franchise

SullysCigar357d ago

Thought the same - very bizarre!

RE7 though... my God, what a shift over RE6! That franchise was definitely going in the wrong direction, so RE7 was a welcome return to form.

ModsDoBetter358d ago

Resi 6 was and still is the worst entry in the series.
7 was a great turnaround, despite people’s concerned about the switch to FP perspective.

DMC5 definitely helped the franchise after the whole DmC debacle. Whilst it was a decent action game, it was a far cry from the series and the characters we knew.

AC Origins is my favourite in the entire AC series. Despite the switch to a more RPG style of gameplay - the setting, soundtrack, length, etc were all amazing. sadly followed up by the ridiculously long and “more of the same” Odsyssey.

I don’t feel it’s fair to say the franchise slipped with Doom 3, Doom 3 was incredibly atmospheric and took the game in a different direction but there’s no denying Doom (2016) was sensational.

Halo 4 & 5 were disappointing but Halo Infinite definitely didn’t save the franchise? What?

TheEnigma313357d ago (Edited 357d ago )

I'm going to have to go with SMB 3. I was around when SMB 2 first came out and people hated it. 3 is still arguably the best mario game created.

HellspawnPR1981357d ago

"Halo Infinite"? Worse Halo ever. Whoever made this list just lost all credibility.

Hofstaderman357d ago

In future lists of a similar nature I have a suspicion Final Fantasy XVI will feature.

Six Best Historically Accurate Games

GF365: "Out of the many historically accurate games out there, these are our picks for the six best games that are historically accurate. While these games aren't completely accurate, they depict the times and situations of history well. Plus, they're all a lot of fun to play, too."

Historically accurate from the past is tough to truly know and judge especially the farther you go back because history is written from the people in power and doesn’t mean it’s the truth just the narrative they wanted to tell.

I don’t care about historically accurate in most games because they are games not biographies or history books . Just make the game fun , good gameplay and such .

Ghost of Tsushima wasn’t historically accurate in many things but I loved the game . Many examples like it .
